The Waterfall to Stanwell Park Rail Trail Overview: Waterfall The proposed ~15km rail trail follows the old rail line abandoned in 1913. The trail would start at Waterfall which is located 38km south of CBD and is approximately one hour by train from Central Station. The route begins in the Royal National Park before passing through the historic communities of Helensburgh and Otford, and concludes on the coast at the scenic Stanwell Park. The trail includes six tunnels the longest of which is the 1600m Otford Tunnel. Benefits: Easily accessible by train or road from Sydney. A family friendly ride with a fall of around 200m in elevation along the route with the option of catching the train back to the starting point for children or less fit riders. The Otford to Stanwell park section would provide the only safe route to traverse the steep Escarpment. This would greatly increase the safety for the many cyclists who currently ride in the Royal National Park and must share the narrow, winding Drive with cars and trucks. This section could also be used by the 10,000 riders in the annual Sydney to Gong fundraising ride. The track would also greatly complement the Grand Pacific Walk, a shared pathway which the Council is building from Stanwell Park to Wollongong. This would Helensburgh provide a link from the greater Sydney metropolitan area to Wollongong and beyond.
