Term 1 Week 10 30 March 2016

Principal’s Report - Jane Ferris

Our sincerest congratulations go to Pippa Pryor in year 10 who has been successful in her application in the 2016 Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship Tour to the Western Front. Established in 2008, the Scholarship provides selected year 10 and 11 students from across NSW an opportunity to travel to key historic battlefields in which Australians have fought. The Tour is funded by the NSW Government and is managed by Veterans’ Affairs within the Department of Premier and Cabinet. In July 2016, Pippa and twenty three other scholars will travel to the key battlefields and memorial sites in France and Belgium to commemorate and learn about ’s involvement in WWI. The Tour will allow the students to gain insight into Australia’s experience of conflict, the lessons of war and develop a greater understanding of the significance of the ANZAC tradition. Scholars will visit the official Australian centenary commemorations of the Battle of Pozières and the Battle of Fromelles. These battles are significant to Australia and NSW given the large losses of Australian soldiers. Students have been selected from all education systems and school sectors throughout NSW based on their written application demonstrating their leadership skills, interest in history and knowledge of these historic events. They will be accompanied by three NSW school teachers. A representative from the RSL, a government representative and a tour historian will also accompany the group.

Congratulations to Jordyn Hess in Young Women’s Leadership Another highly competitive award is the UBS Young Women’s Leadership Academy which will be held at University from 11 to 15 April this year. We are delighted that Jordyn Hess in year 11 has been successful in her application for this wonderful opportunity to develop her leadership skills and develop new relationships with her peer group from other schools. The program is residential at The Women’s College, Sydney University and designed the course to be a creative mix of practical and theory with industry exposure, field visits and syndicate work. The objective of the Academy is to  introduce year 11 students to a diverse group of contemporary women leaders  demonstrate the possibilities and satisfaction of a career in business  encourage leadership aspirations in young women  provide leadership skills development

The TAS faculty is in need of your recycled newspapers for our workshop. Please deliver them to the TAS staffroom at the top of C Block for some blues points rewards!!! Thank you for your continued support, regards TAS Faculty.

The depth of quality students at Pittwater High School is phenomenal. This is clearly illustrated in the music program, the debating teams, sailing pursuits, academic brilliance with Naplan/HSC and plethora of athletes succeeding at zone/regional with the athletics, swimming and cross country carnivals. Now, I need to update that list with the addition to another quality outfit, the open girls softball team. They are through to the fourth round of competition after comprehensively beating their last two teams, Nara Valley High School 17-2 and 16-2 against Kariong Mountains High School.

The next game scheduled for PHS is being played for major stakes involved with the winner take all attitude. The prize is a trip to Newcastle to play in the final 16 for the NSW State Knockout competition. This is a massive opportunity the girls are thrilled about. But the most pleasing aspect of their journey is the amount of fun they have with each other along the way. So Please …watch this space!!

The team includes Year 11: Jessica Tetlow, Bethany Pate. Year 9: Rebecca Milham, Jade Thomas, Sienna Tomkins. Year 8: Amy Le Bang, Paige Hillier, Alex Hagley, Hannah Christie, Jessica Gudmunson. Year 7: Chloe Stevenson, Tamara Gurney, Talia Dunning. Luke Trout - Coach

The Agriculture department would like to again thank Harris Farm and Bakers Delight in Pittwater Place for all their help and support. Since ‘Mouse’ (the pig) arrived at the beginning of this term, they have been providing us with vast quantities of fruits, veggies and bread. Mouse and her adorable eight piglets (Pumpkin, Moo, Crackling, Wilson, Sherlock, Bear, Backstar and Halfpipe) have particularly loved corn, grapes, watermelon, cabbage and hot cross buns (a strange combination but we try not to judge :)

At Pittwater High School we are very proud of our Duke of Edinburgh Award program and each year the program grows in popularity. The internationally recognised leadership program has been run at Pittwater High School since 2002 and is offered to all students in year 9 and above. Students have truly embraced the program that challenges them both mentally and physically with activities that include overnight adventurous hikes, volunteering in projects within their local community, developing new skills to assist their self growth and participating in regular physical activity. To illustrate the success, this year we have over 50 students working hard to achieve their Bronze, Silver or Gold awards. I’m also excited to announce the group of 26 students, which were completing the Bronze Award, successful returned from their practise hike in Dharug National Park. This hike included two days and one night duration with ten hours of hiking each day. The overall hike was a typical encounter with steep mountainous terrain, periods of rain and hot suffering humidity, plague proportion of leeches, gigantic golden orb spiders, buffalo sized fire ants and jumping jacks, but luckily no signs of snakes or funnel webs. The students were amazing with their grit and determination to embrace the beauty and ruggedness of the landscape, even when a couple of groups were temporarily misplaced. After surviving their first hike relatively unscathed, both the staff and students are all super keen and preparing for our qualifying hike in Murra Murra National Park later on this year. Please enjoy the photos of Year 9 students in Dharug National Park. Luke Trout—Duke of Edinburgh Co-ordinator
