HERITAGE AND PRESENT

INTEGRATION

FERRY USAGE IN THE AREA

Steamships like the North American and South American carried passengers from ports throughout the Great Lakes to Petoskey and Harbor Springs. Cabin rates to Petoskey were $8.50 one way and $15.00 round trip from either or Milwaukee. Once in the area, visitors got around via stagecoach, ferry, local rail lines, carriage, bicycle, and on foot.

Throughout our history, the Harbor Springs waterfront has always been a hub of activity. From the first Ottawa who traveled here in birch bark canoes to early homesteaders who arrived by steam ferry, their first glimpse of this little village came from the water. The first trading post was established by Richard Cooper in 1854, near where the Depot building stands today. As white settlement around Little Traverse Bay increased, so did the industry around the harbor. At the head of the harbor, there was a lumber mill, a grist mill and a toothpick factory. Prior to the arrival of trains, most goods arrived via ship.

Even with the arrival of trains in 1882, the harbor MASTER PLAN continued to bustle with government ships on training missions, local steam ferries and passenger ships from Chicago and Detroit. Imagine 400 passengers aboard the 274-foot SS Manitou or the 518-foot Greater Detroit docked at this same pier! Passenger ships continued to make Harbor Springs a port of call through the 1950s.

THE FERRY

OVERVIEW The Boat’s design fits the quintessential look of The Little Traverse Bay area. A drake tail is a Chesapeake Bay boat that features a sloping transom (stern) that meets the waterline at a sharp angle, usually rounded in plan. The design is most notable in 1920’s workboats found in the Chesapeake Bay. The configuration was inspired by World War I destroyer designs. The boat’s design and smaller size are crucial to maintaining a minimally intrusive profile and compliment the aesthetic of our area’s waterfront.

OPERATIONAL GOALS

IMPACT

This project will locally employ four boat captains, three first mates, and seven part time team members. Our capital investment will total to about $215,000 to cover the cost of vessel and outfitting, safety equipment, employee startup costs, licensing/ regulation, etc. WATERFRONT HOMEOWNER PRIVACY

Ferry will maintain course as highlighted. Captain and/ or staff are not to act as a tour guide to private residence. Our main goal is transport to end destination in a both a desirable/fun and convenient fashion. AUTOMOBILE PARKING

Public parking is available currently, however we expect ferriage to be most convenient for pedestrian traffic. We anticipate little to no variance in parking density relative to each destination. SAFETY

Water ferriage is notably one of the safest modes of travel. We hope to cut down potential DUI risk and encourage customers to patronize local businesses without the threats and hazards of impaired driving. WEATHER

Weather out on the water can be quite unpredictable. All ticket sales will be notated with inclement weather exclusions. Little Traverse Bay Ferry Co. will use ultimate discretion to provide only a safe travel experience for passengers. Boat will be outfitted with a protective roof as well as isinglass side panels to minimize UV pollution, wind, water overspray/ rain, etc. In the event of extreme weather ferry simply will not operate. SCHEDULE

Schedule is to be consistent. Ferry schedule is not yet determined, but we would expect to connect destinations within each hour during daily period. Boat will remain at each port for a period of about 15-20 minutes for boarding. Holiday/ peak time traffic is acknowledged and frequency will be increased.

TICKET PURCHASE

Tickets may be purchased directly on the boat at port of call. Tickets may also be purchased in advance via website or other online presence.
