Issue 78 oonnlliinnee mmaaggaazziinnee June 24, 2014 Mal altese Summer is Here

Malta is once again witnessing an influx of Maltese Australians who visit , primarily to meet and enjoy the company of their relatives during one of the is - land’s most enjoyable seasons, summer, that commenced last Saturday June 21. This year promises to be yet another long, hot but beautiful summer full of activities that characterise the Mediterranean culture of the Maltese islands. Malta’s small yet attractive beaches are already getting crowded as this photo of the natural sandy beach of Ghajn Tuffieha Bay, next to Golden Bay (also known as Riviera Martinique) shows. The bay, established by the EU as an area of natural and ecological importance and protected as a Natura 2000 site, remains hugely undeveloped. The hillside, a designated natural park is a haven for hikers, offering fantastic walks on the clay slopes and cliffs. The beach can be reached by a quite steep flight of steps that means that the location doesn’t attract the same volume of people as Golden Bay. The most beautiful 2014 EUROPA stamp competition is now open! And this year's EUROPA theme is "National Musical Instruments". VVoottee ffoorr tthhee MMaalltteessee EEUURROOPPAA ssttaammpp TTooddaayy MaltaPost's stamp depicts musical instruments which were popular in the 19th century. The stamps portray details from the oil painting of the renowned Italian artist Girolamo Gianni who was active in Malta in the latter part of the 19th century. The musical instruments featured in the painting are the bagpipe and drum that are performed by musicians at Valletta's Porta Reale. Readers of The Voice of the Maltese are being invited by MaltaPost to support and vote for the MaltaPost EUROPA stamp on www.posteurop.org/europa2014. The on - line competition will end on August 31, 2014 and the winning stamps will be an - nounced on September 24, 2014 in San Marino. 2 The Voice of the Maltese Tuesday June 24, 2014 SBS Radio and the Maltese Community in Australia he Voice of the Maltese is publishing a joint language. statement by the Maltese Community Coun - We also strongly believe that no ethnic group, whatever its T size, should have an extraordinary amount of radio time allot - cils of the States of New South Wales and Victo - ted to it to the detriment of the smaller communities. It commemorates the feast of two impor - tant Saints in Maltese religious lore, St. Peter and St. Paul. The word luminarja is derived from the Latin word Luminare - to light up. This was the way people manifested their joy in recognition of a particular feast, such lighting being offered by burning bonfires and candles. This feast has developed a different type of merriment from the traditional village ‘festa' style. It is held at the small tree grove in Buskett Gar - den, about a kilometre away from Rabat, on the eve of the day of the feast. Liturgical services are held in the Cathedral.
