Headline Partner Moves in London January – May 2016
Introduction
It’s been a busy start to the year and, in our first report of 2016 (we produce three a year), we comment on a tantalising 200 London partner moves. Despite uncertainty over the looming EU referendum and some concerns over the wider economic outlook, lateral hiring has not slowed down. As ever, in this edition of Headline Partner Moves, we highlight the key hires and try to pick up on some general themes.
Since January 2016 Sidley Austin have been the top hiring firm at partner level, welcoming eight new partners to their London office, including a six partner team from their Chicago based rivals Kirkland & Ellis. We are seeing an increase in team moves as, while the initial investment is greater, the returns can be higher, quicker and more certain. Other team moves that stand out in this report include two real estate partners moving from King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) to Ashurst, an IP litigation team from KWM to Mishcon de Reya, a TMT team from Herbert Smith Freehills to Ashurst, a patent litigation team from Rouse to Fieldfisher, a pensions and trusts litigation team from
Maurice Turnor Gardner to Stephenson Harwood and an aviation finance team from Simmons & Simmons to Winston & Strawn.
A few other trends stand out from this period’s report:
There have been markedly fewer finance moves than in most recent reports.
Real Estate has also been relatively quiet, although there have been some interesting moves in planning and construction.
Corporate remains busy and has again been dominated by private equity moves to US firms.
TMT and IP have been very active for senior level recruitment, with areas like patent litigation, fintech, data protection and cyber security in huge demand.
Headline Hires January – May 2016
CORPORATE
The headline move of the period is Sidley Austin’s audacious raid on Kirkland & Ellis, hiring a team of six partners, who will establish a private equity practice for Sidley in London.
Kirkland & Ellis are never far from the headlines as the management team looks to reshape the London office. Corporate partner David Holdsworth joins this month along with tax partner Tim Lowe, as the fourth and fifth partner moves from Linklaters in the past 12 months. Earlier in the year, managing associate Joel Arnell joined Kirkland as a partner, also from Linklaters.
The drift of private equity stars from UK to US firms continues with a rare loss for Travers Smith, who saw Helen Croke leave for Ropes & Gray. Elsewhere, James MacArthur moves from Herbert Smith Freehills to Weil, Gotshal & Manges.
White & Case are on a roll in London and continue to make high-profile hires, most recently adding corporate partner Guy Potel from Hogan Lovells, and ECM partner Jonathan Parry from Ashurst.
Anthony Clare becomes part of a growing team of Ashurst alumni in the corporate department at Stephenson Harwood, as he joins former colleagues Andrew Edge and Duncan Stiles at Finsbury Circus.
FINANCE/RESTRUCTURING
The demand for private equity capability among the US firms in London has led to a raft of finance partner moves over the past few years. Recent examples include Sidley Austin hiring James Crooks from Willkie Farr & Gallagher to complement the newly arrived team from Kirkland & Ellis. In turn, Willkie hired Mark Fine from Bain, who was himself previously at Kirkland.
Demonstrating that the US firms don’t have the entire market to themselves, high yield partner Andy Hagan left Kirkland & Ellis for Freshfields, to be reunited with Ward McKimm, who made the same move a year ago.
Vinson & Elkins have also made a private equity play, attracting finance partner Ian Frost from Freshfields and corporate partner Paul Dunbar from Cadwalader.
Cooley continue their growth in London, plugging a finance gap with the hire of John Clark from Mayer Brown.
In a sign of where the market might be heading, demand for restructuring partners is higher than it has been for a few years. Notable moves in this report include Ashley Katz leaving Mayer Brown for Fried Frank and Travers Smith making a relatively rare lateral hire, taking Edward Smith from K&L Gates.
FINANCIAL SERVICES
Historically some US firms have been dismissive of financial services as a practice area in its own right, with an expectation that transactional partners should be able to advise on the regulatory regime themselves. There are signs that this is changing with a couple of headline hires this quarter.
Cleary Gottlieb are conservative hirers to say the least so, when they dip into the market, people sit up and take notice. Bob Penn from Allen & Overy is a rare addition to their London office.
Gibson Dunn welcomes James Perry from Ashurst, where he will be reunited with Charlie Geffen and his team.
REAL ESTATE/PLANNING
Pure real estate recruitment at partner level has definitely dropped off, with a clear softening of the market over recent months. However a couple of hires stand out:
Proskauer Rose announced this week the arrival of Joanne Owen from DLA Piper, its first step towards building a real estate practice in London.
Ashurst have recruited a team from KWM, with Darren Rogers and Patrick Williams joining the department.
Elsewhere, Addleshaw Goddard will hope that their hire of Iain Hindhaugh from Jones Day strengthens their relationship with mutual client British Land.
BLP and Nabarro used to slug it out as heavyweights of the UK real estate market. Movement between the two firms is relatively rare, so real estate funds partner Victoria Henry’s switch to Nabarro is interesting.
In real estate finance, the stand-out move is Linklaters’ hiring of former Allen & Overy head of real estate finance Mark O'Neill.
In planning, Pinsent Masons continue to build out their market-leading practice, most recently adding Gareth Phillips from Watson Farley & Williams.
Elsewhere, DAC Beachcroft have appointed Christopher Stanwell from Nabarro as head of their planning practice.
PROJECTS/ENERGY
Energy moves have continued, despite the now rising but historically depressed oil price, perhaps indicating that firms are jockeying for position in a tight market.
Mayer Brown have invested in their projects team with three hires so far this year: Matthew Kidwell (oil and gas) joins from Morgan Lewis and, on the project finance side, the firm welcomes Tom Eldridge from Dentons and Kieron Dwyer from Gowling WLG.
Watson Farley & Williams are on a strong run of lateral recruitment and have made a key hire in the oil and gas space, adding John Conlin from Andrews Kurth.
Meanwhile Dentons have made a splash in the rail world, attracting David Moore from Clyde & Co.
DISPUTE RESOLUTION
Arbitration has dominated this report’s litigation moves.
Hamish Lal, who focuses on international construction arbitration in the oil, gas, nuclear and infrastructure sectors, joins Akin Gump from Jones Day.
Matthew Saunders, who was head of arbitration at DLA Piper, joined Ashurst at the start of the year.
Corporate crime is a busy area and this report sees three counsels at top tier US firms move for immediate partnership elsewhere: Louise Delahunty from Sullivan & Cromwell to Cooley, Matthew Cowie from Skadden to Dechert and Matthew Getz from Debevoise to Boies Schiller.
One of the highest profile corporate crime moves is Daren Allen swapping Berwin Leighton Paisner for Dentons.
Stephenson Harwood have pulled off a team hire, taking pensions and trusts litigation partners Jenny McKeown and Helena Berman from boutique private wealth firm Maurice Turnor Gardner.
EMPLOYMENT/BENEFITS
The highest profile move in the employment space was Stefan Martin moving from Mayer Brown to Hogan Lovells.
At the same time, Hogan Lovells were able to announce the hire of senior employee benefits partner Paul Randall from Ashurst.
London offices of US firms don’t often hire employment partners, usually settling for senior associates to cover corporate support work, so Susan Fanning’s move from DLA Piper to Sidley Austin stands out.
PwC Legal clearly see employment/HR as an obvious area of growth for their business and have recently welcomed two partners from DLA Piper: Tom Kerr Williams on the employment side and pensions partner David Farmer.
IP/TMT/DATA PROTECTION
Mishchon de Reya have secured David Rose and his team from KWM to add a serious patent litigation capability to their already strong IP practice.
Meanwhile, Fieldfisher have hired a three partner patent litigation team from Rouse led by Diana Sternfeld.
Ashurst have made a double partner TMT hire, taking Nick Elverston and Amanda Hale from Herbert Smith Freehills.
Data protection and cyber security remain hot areas of recruitment. The stand out move this report is Ross McKean joining DLA Piper from Olswang.
Taylor Wessing continue to play to their strengths in TMT with a couple of high profile hires: technology partner Martin Cotterill from Latham & Watkins and telecoms partner Angus Finnegan from Reed Smith.
