Our “New Normal”

3 - From there(above) to this (left) is what it looks like now...

Our Daily Lives After Coronavirus

By ALEXIS GILROY

In the midst of chaos, it’s hard to see what the future holds for us. Will we return to life before the virus or will we have to adjust to a “new normal?” Many people are starting to make an adjustment to their lives because of Covid-19 and it could be quite challenging.

Since quarantine started, many people have become reliant on technology to keep in touch with school, work, and friends. Many people are predicting that this reliance will transfer to the post-coronavirus world. If this were to happen it would increase the amount of stay at home jobs since board meetings would be a click away. It would most likely decrease social interactions and strengthen digital meetings.

Despite the ways to connect through technology, as well as shop, many people are anxiously awaiting the day they can freely go back outside again. Across America there has been a massive shutdown, from salons to malls many stores are shutting down in this attempt to “flatten the curve,” but it can’t continue like this forever. With many areas entering the yellow zone, stores are starting to open with heavy precaution. Masks must always be worn and carrying hand sanitizer has become a must. But will this transfer to the “new normal” too?

With so much going on it’s hard to see where the virus will have us end up. Every action could lead to a different outcome after Covid-19 dies down and it could be a very frightening thing to people. For now it’s best to see where the future takes America and the rest of the world as a whole. Sources: zdnet.com, inquirer.com, forbes.com

Sweden Staying Open

A different approach to the virus… By LOGHAN HIRKEY

While the entire world has been in quarantine due to the outbreak of Covid-19, Sweden has been the lone wolf keeping everything the same. No quarantine measures have been taken, and they are taking the “if it happens it happens” approach, but is this really the better option?

As of Sunday, May 3 Sweden reported more than 18,500 confirmed cases and 2,194 deaths. In comparison to their neighboring countries Norway and Finland, Sweden has more than double the amount of cases in Norway and has triple the amount of cases in Finland. Both Norway and Finland have been in quarantine. Is this proving that Sweden has made the wrong decision?

According to the Ambassador Karin Ulrika Olofsdotter claims that, “about 30% of residents in Stockholm have herded immunity.” This means that the virus can no longer affect them in a tragic way. By herding immunity (people who can become immune), the entire country can possibly live with corona virus, but not be affected.

The plan Sweden has made is to keep the economy from crashing completely, although they have seen a toll on unemployment from 6.5 to 11%. Certain restrictions have been added such as not having gatherings of more than 50 people, but business, schools, and malls remain open throughout most of the country.

In the long run we can only wait and see if Sweden had the better approach, or if they should have quarantined like their neighboring countries. In the coming weeks, let us all hope for an ending to this pandemic, regardless if you are living a regular life in Sweden, or a quarantined life in the rest of the world.

Kim Jong Un’s Speculated Death

And why media outlets should be cautious. By MADISON NESTOR

Every year commemorates their founder Kim Il Sung on April 15. Ever since assuming power Kim Jong Un has always been present at this event, but this year he was not in attendance which sparked two South Korean defectors to speculate upon what happened. They stated that he was suffering from a terrible illness and could possibly be dead after his three-week disappearance.

The most popular theory was that Kim was in critical condition after a heart surgery. The less publicized theories included a possible nuclear attack and an alleged plan from Kim in order to reveal which of his colleagues were “traitors”.

The first story about Kim’s alleged death came from a popular South Korean news source called Daily NK. This website investigates North Korean news and often uses multiple anonymous sources due to lack of media coverage in the country. On April 20 they reported that Kim was recovering from heart surgery at a North Korean resort as a result of his poor diet and smoking. The initial story stated that Kim has not been seen in public since April 11.

South Korean officials denied the story and commented that they had not seen any unusual activity in Pyongyang or at the border. Regardless of this comment, news sources began reporting. CNN reported that the United States was monitoring intelligence stating Kim’s grave condition and listed two anonymous U.S. officials as the source. Regardless of this comment, news sources began reporting.

TMZ reported Kim’s near-death condition as one of their breaking news headlines and suggested that he was “on his death bed with no hope for recuperation”. Katy Tur, a host from MSNBC, claimed he was brain dead on Twitter. Soon after this, the topic of Kim’s alleged death was popular on Twitter and various other social media platforms.

On April 23 President Donald Trump shared during a press conference that CNN’s report was “incorrect" but was just as vague as mainstream news was with his sources. He even stated, “I have a good relationship with Kim Jong Un, and I hope he’s okay.”

Kim reappeared on May 2 smoking and speedily walking at an opening event for a fertilizer factory. South Korean diplomats Thae Yong-ho and Ji Seong-ho both immediately came out with apologies following Kim’s reappearance.

Various experts on North Korea noted this incident should be a lesson to learn from. News sources should not blindly trust their other media outlets, but verify them, especially considering how vague the sources were. Sources: washingtonpost.com, theguardian.com Kindness Amid the Chaos

Take the time to spread a little kindness By ALEXIS GILROY

They say that amid the chaos, kindness always finds a way to shine through. In the past weeks the coronavirus has been running rampant throughout the world. Along with harming those who have tested positive for the virus, it is also harming those who are practicing social distancing with depression. The coronavirus is taking a toll on everyone, so people are coming together to spread kindness across the world.

All over Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter people are making memes to cope with the surreal reality of the coronavirus. But some are using these platforms as a chance to spread kindness and positivity. A new Instagram thread arose with the sole purpose of spreading kindness.

This isn’t the only way people are spreading kindness.

This isn’t the only way people are spreading kindness. Many people are now starting to take this into the real world. A group in Italy came together to sing on balconies and many are setting up groups to get groceries for the elderly, as well as just calling them to chat for a bit. With all the negativity going around it’s important for people to remember that we’re all in this together. (wowwww high school musical)

You can spread positivity from home as well. @mentalhealth on Twitter (and @mentalhealthfoundation on Instagram and Facebook) have set up #CoronavirusKindness on social media so you can share your kindness. Just take a picture of your act of kindness, such as donating to a foodbank, sending someone a takeout meal, telling someone you are proud of them, or text someone you haven’t talked to for a while, then tag @mentalhealthfoundation/@mentalhealth and use their hashtag. Don’t forget to wash your hands, too! Sources: mentalhealth.org.uk

Coronavirus Rresearcher Found Dead

4 - Valuable insight on Covid-19 was lost.

By AVA KIDD

Bing Liu, a 37-year-old University of Pittsburgh professor who was researching Covid-19, was found dead in his townhouse on Saturday, May 2. Investigators believe the incident to be a murder-suicide, as a second body was found in a car nearby the residence.

Liu’s colleagues in the university’s School of Medicine claim that, "Bing was on the verge of making very significant findings toward understanding the cellular mechanisms that underlie SARS-CoV-2 infection and the cellular basis of the following complications...", which has influenced a rise in conspiracies about the virus and those working behind the scenes to fight it.

The Ross Police Department has not released the identity of the professor’s killer. However, it is believed that the two knew each other. The motive is currently unknown.

COVID 19 & the 2020 election

Months Away, but Doubts Already Settling in.

By EMMA MORAN

The COVID 19 pandemic has already affected so much of daily life- from school and work closures to the raging fear that forms every time you step into a store. But, sadly, the effects of COVID 19 aren’t finished wrecking the country- experts are already looking for a backup plan for the 2020 presidential election.

You might be thinking, “But the election isn’t until November? That’s months away! Won’t the virus be gone by then?” Hopefully, it will, but the caution regarding the election isn’t unjustified. According to the University of Washington, the death toll of COVID 19 in The United States will reach 74,000 by August, and the total number of COVID 19 cases will continue to rise.

Even if COVID 19 lessens its effect on the public, the fear it brings might harm the election process. In the 2016 election, only 55.7% of allegeable voters went to the polls. With the fear of contacting COVID 19, it’s predicted that if the election goes on as it was supposed to, that percentage will significantly drop.

You might be thinking, “But the election isn’t until November?"

One solution to this issue could be to push back the election, but this is a subject of controversy. Representatives from rural areas would rather keep the election on November 3, while representatives from urban areas are pushing for the postponement of the election. This comes down to the impact of the virus- urban areas, such as New York City, have been hit hardest because of COVID 19, so they are more hesitant about having this continue as normal. Due to the conflicting sides, pushing back the election doesn’t seem to be the best option.

There is another solution: mail in ballots. These ballots are usually used for people that cannot make their way to polls on Election Day, but since that might describe the entire nation, voting by mail is the best option. This will require each state to print and distribute the ballots. Congress cannot force the states to use mail in ballots, because elections are run by each individual state, but by offering to pay for the ballots, they can encourage states to do it. With the use of mail in ballots, the United States will be able to protect its democracy, even in this time of crisis.

2020… ANYTHING ELSE?

By LOGHAN HIRKEY

The Asian giant hornets, better known as the “murder hornets” are a peculiar looking hornet that can span two inches long, have fierce teardrop eyes, and orange and black stripes like a tiger. They are dangerous hornets that are destroying beehives across the world, and more recently made their way to the United States.

Along with their scary appearance, they can really do damage to other beehives and even to humans. Although there is not a specific time when the Asian giant hornet originated, many believe they started to spread from China around 2004. Japan alone reported 50 deaths per year to this dangerous hornet. Conrad Bérubé, a beekeeper from Vancouver Island claimed that the sting from these savage insects felt like, “having red hot thumbtacks being driven into my flesh.” The next day, Conrad even had aching legs such as when you have the flu. It was the most painful sting he ever experienced. Jun-ichi Takahashi, a researcher at Kyoto Sangyo University in Japan, stated that this murderous hornet can expose victims to venom equivalent to that of a snake. With the right amount of dosage, the sting can be fatal. This would relate to the feeling of the hot thumbtacks that Conrad Bérubé experienced.

This fact alone is terrifying and shows how dangerous the Asian giant hornets are. However, the threat does not even stop at humans, the Asian giant hornets are also killing other bees and destroying beehives. With their mandibles spiked like shark fins, a beehive can be destroyed within hours, with the hornets even taking the dead bee’s thoraxes to feed their young. This new threat puts the entire beekeeping industry at risk.

Ruthie Danielsen, a beekeeper, stated that “Most people are scared to be stung by them… We’re scared they are going to totally destroy our hives.” Bees are crucial for wax, honey, and most of all pollination throughout our world for other animals, and for the entire human race to thrive. Without bees, mankind would survive about 4 years. This fact alone is terrifying and shows how dangerous the Asian giant hornets are.

Through trapping and research, many are working diligently to get rid of this hornet for good. According to Chris Looney, an entomologist at the Washington State Department of Agriculture, he claims that, “If we can’t do it in the next couple of years, it probably can’t be done.” It is extremely terrifying that nothing good can come from this deadly insect. All we can do now is hope that these dangerous hornets are stopped, and no harm will come to humans or the bees. Sources nytimes.com, vice.com

Temporary Layoffs Across America Begin to Turn Permanent

Could it be a premature callback to the Great Depression?

By JACOB EZZO

During the early stages of the pandemic many workers were laid off as part of a plan to save money and slow the spread of COVID-19 with the promise that after this is over they will be rehired. However, with restrictions easing many people have learned that their aforementioned layoff may become permanent. More to come...

Grim Reaper Visits Florida Beaches

An unusual protest against early reopening

By JOSIE GALELLA

It was announced on Friday, May 1 by the Florida Governor that state parks and beaches woul d reopen that following Monday under the belief that sunlight, heat, and humidity would kill Covid-19, and therefore the citizens attending would be in no danger as long as they were to follow the rules of social distancing. While many were happy to hear that the state was on its way to reopening, others worried that these large crowds would bring on a second wave of Covid.

Florida lawyer Daniel Uhlfelder was one of many skeptics made sure that his protests would be heard. As people gathered at beaches that following Monday, Uhlfelder arrived in a Grim Reaper costume rather than a bathing suit. He appeared in several news broadcasting stations claiming that his apparel was a way to make it clear to citizens how dangerous premature reopening is to the public. Why You Should Wear a Face Mask

5 - Facts... not Fear, right?

You’d Think People Would Get It After Two Months...

By EMMA MORAN

It’s the beginning of May, the Coronavirus is still a large threat, and every time I log onto SnapChat, I find more people complaining about wearing a face mask, or just refusing to wear one altogether. They don’t see the point; the face masks are uncomfortable so they shouldn’t have to wear them; the president himself isn’t wearing one, why should they?

Well, people should wear face masks in an attempt to “flatten the curve” of oronavirus. This is proven to have worked. In countries like China, Japan, and where there are stricter rules regarding face masks, they have flatter curves.

But there is one genuine concern: only N95 respiratory masks can properly defend against the virus. And since those masks are saved for nurses and doctors, there’s no point in wearing any other masks, right? No. Normal surgical and handmade masks might not be perfect protection, but they offer something is better than nothing. So, if you find yourself complaining, too, remember, isn’t it better to have some protection than to find yourself sick with the virus that’s already taken so many lives? A few perspectives...

PA Begins Mandatory Online Schooling

Is At Home Education Actually Working?

By STEPHEN EL

It’s official; we will not be finishing the rest of our school year as we expected. We will now be finishing out our year with online courses. As someone who has never done schooling on a computer at home before, it was a new experience. Once school was officially closed for the rest of the year, no work was mandatory and everything was primarily enrichment. After May 4, however, work became mandatory and new content was given out to all students for each class. It’s pretty simple, everyone had until May 1 to complete any and all work that was given to them or make up any work from that quarter before we left the school building.

The education website Edmentum was originally used for the first few weeks as enrichment, but in the last few days, multiple sites started to be used by teachers. These sites included Microsoft Teams, Office 365, KhanAcademy, along with Edmentum and any other individual papers given out. As that does not seem like a lot, when you have up to 6 different subjects that almost all use multiple sites each, it can seem very stressful having to go from site to site completing all the assignments within the given time. Due to this, I feel like some students will feel the need to not complete all the work bouncing from site to site. Shortening the list of sites used or having easier access to all these sites from main hub would be a huge improvement to the online education system. As time goes on, I hope our system of education is able to improve to the fullest of its abilities.

How to Survive Online School

We’re all in this together!

By IRELAND CLARK

Never in a million years did I, or anyone for that matter, guess that this is where we would be in May 2020. Right about now, students would be preparing for finals, and seniors specifically would be getting ready for graduation and their futures. But we can’t change what’s happened and so here we are. Online school isn’t easy and frankly it’s a struggle for both students and teachers. While this is a stressful time for everyone, there are some ways to alleviate the stress and anxiety.

Communication is key throughout all of this. If you’re confused about an assignment, email your teacher or text a friend. When I’ve gotten overwhelmed by all this new territory, I have done these things to help myself. After talking with someone, I can go back and work with a clear mind.

Taking breaks while working is really important. You can burn yourself out by sitting on your computer working for hours on end. You’ll find yourself getting more frustrated and tired if you do this. Taking breaks allows you to work with less stress and anger. You can come back to work with a clear head and a better mood. You’ll even get more work done. The breaks shouldn’t be too long or too short or that’s just a waste of time. Gauge the right amount of time for your break and I guarantee that you’ll come back better than before.

This is a hard time for everyone, not just the students. No one really knows what they’re doing and there is a lot of confusion going around. Remember to keep in touch with your teachers if you don’t understand your assignments. Don’t forget to take breaks and walk around a bit. We only have a few more weeks left, and we can get through this. Good luck!

Why Online Schooling Honestly Stinks Pardon the language but it’s true.

By EMMA MORAN

Enough through it’s only been officially happening for two weeks, I can easily say that online schooling is the worse. Don’t get me wrong, I understand why we must do it, but that doesn't make the situation any better. Every day feels like clockwork- wake up, eat, sit at the computer, eat, sit at the computer, eat, rinse and repeat. But normal school is the same cycle- so why does online schooling feel so much worse?

Personally, I think it comes down to one main thing: the lack of human contact. Think about it. In a normal school day, we interact with a lot of people- teachers, friends, other students. And that’s not counting people who have clubs or sports! Humans are social creatures, so with the lack of human contact, it makes everything feel worse.

There are other things, too. Online schoolwork is much less simulating than normal schoolwork. There are no labs, no creative projects- just reading the text and answering the questions. Also, if you have a problem with your schoolwork, it’s much harder to get help. Instead of just going to see a teacher, you have to message them and wait for an answer or wait to set up a Zoom meeting. There's also nothing to really look forward to. A long weekend is rewarding after a week of school, but now, the weekend is just like every day, nor does anyone have plans to look forward to.

Well, if there’s anything I know, is that after all this, I don’t think I'll find myself complaining about going back to in-person school at all. A Partial Editorial/Partial Online School

Dear Internet

A rant from yours truly,

By MADISON NESTOR

This is the most in the moment rant of my entire life. It is Tuesday, May 12 and I have worked on probability and statistics all day. I just finished the homework and I understand it too, but it will not send. As I am typing this it is 5:10. The assignment is due at 7:00 p.m. and my Wi-Fi is nowhere near improving.

Normally I cannot send the assignment through Microsoft Teams because I live in the middle of nowhere and Frontier Wi-Fi is the worst thing to ever exist on this whole planet. Emailing the assignment usually works, but my Internet has failed me today. It will not even let me load photos into the email like it did prior. As soon as it appears loaded and I click the almighty send button it should work. It really should work. It has no reason to not work. But of course, it says it did not load despite the load bar being at 100% and completed.

At one point today I wished for teachers to have snapchat, but then I realized that is a REALLY bad idea considering the events that happened with our former substitute teacher whose name rhymes with Mr. Piggs. I feel as though using a carrier pigeon is more useful than relying on my Internet connection.

My next genius idea was trying to send a power point of my homework over, but of course it would make too much sense for Microsoft to have one app that includes everything instead of having billions of different apps that do virtually the same thing. I do not know what my last resort will be.

Emailing the assignment usually works, but my Internet has failed me today.

I want to load up other classes and finish the work, but of course that is impossible, too. These last two months I felt the laziest and most unproductive and that was when my Internet worked. Now that I finally CRAVE a form of structure in my life it all hits the fan. It took me 15 minutes to get onto the platform to write this very article, but instead of giving up I let my stress headache fester into creative brilliance. I got even more stressed when it started to load because it would not even allow me to backspace on any misspelling- so my edit after this will be, in addition to everything else, tedious. We were assigned editorials for this week to write and I feel as passionate as ever about my current situation so here I am writing about it. I think she will accept this as my article because I am writing about my current situation- and I feel like this must be happening to a decent amount of everyone, too.

I don’t care right now that this is being read in the future where my assignment is in and my Wi-Fi is likely to be still awful, but functional. I am over-dramatic right now, but I do not care. Sending out my personal condolences for any poor soul who must go through this too.

Dove Chocolate

Just me writing in the moment, about the moment

By MADISON NESTOR

If you read some of the articles that were in this newsletter, then you know about what Adopt a Senior is. A member of this school newspaper, Loghan Hirkey is one of my adopters and my other adopter was Rob Jenkins’ mom. Loghan has gotten me so many nice things which I am thankful for and Rob’s mom has done the same, but there is one gift that I got which made me think.

That gift was a red, white and brown bag of Dove’s Silky-Smooth Promises Dark Chocolate. Most know the 170-calorie treat is phenomenal, and the tinfoil wrapping is arguably luxurious. There is one specific feature of this snack that makes me question a few things and that is the odd quote on the inside.

If you read my other editorial about my rage regarding God-awful Internet connection, you know how mad I was. To feel some form of happiness, I reached for my Dove Chocolate. When I put the chocolate in my mouth it tasted heavenly, but that moment did not last long because upon looking at the wrapper I saw a quote which read:

“Your vibe attracts your tribe”- Libby W., California. So many thoughts rushed through my head. Why is this even included? This is the worst quote that has ever existed. Who is Libby W? Why does Dove put irrelevant quotes in my chocolate? What does this mean? Why have so many Facebook moms posted this very quote?

I then grabbed another which read, “Don’t stop until you’re proud.”- Lauren N,. Colorado. This quote did not resonate with me one bit. I did not feel attacked or anything I just feel that if you are sticking quotes from random people into a product then they might as well be good.

It’s the “vibe” coming off that person.

The Life of a McDonald's Worker

During this pandemic you have heroes, and you have us.

By ANONYMOUS

I have recently gone back to work at McDonalds and things are different now. Of course, some of the new aspects are the safety procedures and the limited number of staff, but also the jobs we had, have new tasks as well. The stress of working at a McDonalds before this crisis started was definite. All fast food places are stress inducers, but there is something about Mcdonalds that takes the cake, especially when it’s one of the only fast food places in Tunkhannock. Working at McDonald’s is interesting for a multitude of reasons; one is you constantly feel like you’re doing a bad job, especially when you feel the eyes of all the other employees watching your every move. Managers don’t make it any better with the whispers of your failure, but unless it’s a big one they won’t bring it up to you.

Not only do you feel like a failure, sometimes certain managers will treat you like one. During these troubled times all of the employees and managers are doing something unknown to them so you would assume that everyone takes it easy on one another. Think again, the stress really makes people harder to work with.

Everyone is on edge and now when someone messes up they basically get targeted by everyone else in the store. Through all of these downsides, I am deciding to stay especially with the motivation of corporate. They have increased pay, give everyone a free bundle box once a week and are constantly adding bonus hours for the fact of us working through this. There may be a lot of reasons to leave, but you only need a few to stay, and as long as you have one friend you can get through it. Activities During Coronavirus 2020

Ways to Keep in Contact with Friends or Family

Where the gang at?

By IRELAND CLARK

I think it’s a safe assumption to make that many of us aren’t seeing friends and family much these days. The world is currently on lockdown and that means not seeing your friends and family like you used to. It’s important to keep in touch with people when we are isolated like this and perhaps feeling lonely. With the technology, both old and new, keeping in touch isn’t so hard. Here are two ways to do just that.

I’ve recently discovered that a cool way to keep in touch is writing a letter. For Easter, I wrote my mom a letter. When she got it, she was really happy, which in turn made me happy. It was cool to see that something seemingly so small could make someone so happy. It’s also neat because you can keep the letters you get and look back on them. It doesn’t take much to write a letter and send it to someone you miss and love. I’ve recently discovered that a cool way to keep in touch is writing a letter.

Now, video chatting or Facetiming is probably the best way to chat long distance, but there’s another way of communicating with friends and family that can be more fun. Group chats are a fun way to keep in touch and there are so many pros to it. You can send funny pictures or videos or screenshots. You can save your group chat and look back on funny conversations, the best part of it. It brings back great memories and always puts a smile on my face. If you don’t have a group chat already, which you probably do, make one with a group of family or friends.

Nothing will beat being able to see someone in person and have a conversation face to face. However, we are restricted to our current situation and we must deal with it the best we can. You can write a letter, video chat, text, etc. It’s unfortunate that our options are kind of limited, but we have to work with what we have.

Why Everyone Needs a Spinning Chair

"Science proves me right."

By MICHAEL BOYD Most times when people want to sit they have to choose a boring regular chair. The people want excitement, they want comfort, they need a spinning chair. I have recently acquired a GTracing gaming chair for my birthday. Now I may have originally gotten this chair to comfortably play video games but its new purpose in my life is to spin around while I’m watching things on TV. When the chair arrived I was a little upset because the color wasn’t the right one as advertised, however the overwhelming feeling of relaxation surpassed my rage. When I get home from work I sit down and spin for a bit to sooth me after a stressful day. I think a chair of this variety can spin away any problems in one ’s life.

If you don’t believe me, this totally real scientist named Dr. Chair proves my claims in this statement. “Comfy Spinning chairs are the key to happiness.” When I reached out to him for comment he said, “We need more people in this world who understand the value of fine chairs. I got my PHD in furniture relations I would know.” As you can see, he clearly is a real man and spinning comfy chairs are the way of the future.

What Are Some of The Benefits Of Quarantine?

Lockdown has it's good side By STEPHEN EL

The U.S. has been in lockdown for over two months now, and it has gotten boring. For the first two weeks or so, there was excitement over the idea of being out of school and not having to worry about assignments, being able to hang with friends all day, and just being a stress-free student. However, after being in lockdown for months, everyone is ready to get out and about now.

While quarantine is fairly unenjoyable, it's not all bad. It does have its positive parts. One of the most obvious is that there is so much time to learn something new. Discover a new hobby, or finally teach yourself how to do that one thing you’ve always wanted to but never had time for.

Some easy things you could do are learn to cook, or if you know how to cook, make something new, try painting or decorating your room or house, or even develop a good workout routine to keep you in shape. This is also a good time for a bit of self-reflection, and to try to improve yourself as a person if need be. Basically, all this time allows you to do all those things you always wanted to do and never really had the time. Now, at this moment, all you have is time.

Extra Ways to Make Money as a Teenager

No Job? No Problem

By STEPHEN EL

Almost everything in our world revolves around money, either its acquiring it or spending it. Everyone would like to make money, but not everyone has the means to have a job in the workplace. Whether it is lack of transportation or lack of options, sometimes getting a usual 9 to 5 job as a teenager is difficult. However, there are so many other ways to make money that not everyone knows about.

Probably the most easy way is reselling. Reselling is when you purchase an item and then sell it again at a higher price so that you can make profit from it. You can resell pretty much anything that has value, from Pokemon cards to sneakers. As a start I suggest looking through your closet or room and seeing if there is something you don't use that you would not mind selling. Then, take a few pictures, choose your price and post it up on selling platforms like E-bay or Facebook Marketplace. This is a super simple and easy way to make a few bucks quickly.

Another option is to sell a talent you have, like painting or sewing. If you are talented in painting, you could easily offer your services on the internet. It could be your own items you’ve painted that you are selling, or offering to paint other people's items for a small fee.

Finally, if you’re feeling comfortable enough in the tech world, you could even learn to trade stocks and make huge profit with investments in popular companies such as Tesla and Apple. Plus, you can do all of these without ever really leaving your home. Alongside being able to make money, you end up meeting so many people in the resale community and are able to make friendships with people you might not have ever met otherwise that can last a lifetime. What to do in Quarantine

There are ways to fight off this boredom

By IRELAND CLARK

At this point, it’d be repetitive and obvious to say that many of us are bored and don’t know what to do with all this new-found free time. Since school became mandatory May 4, many of us are preoccupied with that. Still, we have several moments of boredom and may not know what to do to fill that time up. Here are a few helpful ideas of what to do with your time.

During quarantine, it’s important to keep your hopes and mood high. A way to do so is by letting your creative juices flow. You could start painting, drawing, writing, sculpting, and a million other things. You can finally finish that one art project that’s just been collecting dust, or you can learn a new creative skill. Personally, I’ve been painting a ton more and experimenting with different paints. Don’t let this free time pass you by without having done something fun and colorful.

For my fellow bookworms out there, this is a great time to catch up on reading. I know for me, it’s hard to read the books I want to when I’m so busy with school. You can finally read the books that have been accumulating on your bookshelf. I’m currently reading Frankenstein since we didn’t get a chance to read it in English. And if you’re not the biggest reader, this is still a fantastic time to perhaps start reading more.

Now, there are a million other things to do besides painting, coloring, reading and writing. Depending on where you live, you can go outside into the woods and hike or camp. You can start working out, learn a new language, clean out your closet, etc. Your options are limitless, and you shouldn’t underestimate yourself or these new activities. HUMAN INTEREST

Adopt a HS Senior

Spreading positivity, one senior at a time!

By AVA KIDD

Since Tom Wolf’s closure of Pennsylvania schools, high school seniors have been robbed of a typical graduation experience. At this point, it is unknown what will be done about proms, graduation ceremonies, or class trips. To shed light on this, the Facebook group “Adopt a Susquehanna/Wyoming County HS Senior” is dedicated to performing random acts of kindness, and “...is meant to encourage and uplift our seniors in a positive manner.” Seniors from the area are posted about on the group’s page, usually with a description of their hobbies and personality. The first two users to comment in hopes of ‘adopting’ the senior are assigned as their adopters. Adopters send the student gifts/cards to help give them a positivity boost.

My experience as an adoptee has been one that will stick with me for the rest of my life. The kindness that I’ve been treated with from this group and my adopters has helped me remember that the class of 2020 is not forgotten. Although our year is different than the rest, we have worked just as hard. Being congratulated on my achievements by strangers has encouraged me to keep my head up during these difficult times. Adopting Animals

The perfect time to adopt… By LOGHAN HIRKEY

While we quarantine, it is important to look at the positives of this opportunity. When will we ever again be with our families all the time, joking, making memories, and appreciating life in its simplest form? I suppose the better question would even be, what better time than now to adopt a new dog or cat?

An estimated one million cats and dogs are euthanized in the United States every year simply because shelters become too overrun, and not enough people are adopting. By adopting an animal, you could be saving his or her life, and leading her to a future of happiness with your family.

Adopting animals can also be little to no cost to you. Every adoptee has more than likely been given their shots and have been spayed or neutered. The Meshoppen Cat Rescue in Meshoppen keeps all their cats up to date on being spayed or neutered, along with vaccinations. They also give away their cats for free! I personally went to this rescue for my cat Prince, and he has been a wonderful addition to our family!

By practicing everything within the guidelines of social distancing, you can strap on your mask and bring home a new dog or cat to keep you occupied during quarantine! This is a great time for a pet because you have plenty of time to train him or her and get them acquainted with you or your family.

The places to adopt an adorable new animal besides Meshoppen Cat Rescue include: Griffin Pond Animal Shelter in South Abington, Blue Chip Farm Animal Refuge in Dallas, Lackawanna Kennel Club in Scranton, and many, many more!

So, what are you waiting for? Go pick up an adorable new cat or dog, to love and train during this unique time of our lives! Every animal will be eternally grateful to have been given love and care by you.

Celebrating motherhood...without your mother?

By AVA KIDD

Coming from a loving, tight-knit family, quarantining has made it especially challenging to be able to show appreciation towards my loved ones. My mom, grandmother, and I have a Mother's Day tradition of hiking Osterhout mountain and were unable to do so this year. My mom was dismayed at the thought of neglecting Grandma and knew that she needed to pull together something special for her. When we saw that Glenburn Grill and Bakery released a menu of Mother’s Day takeout specials, we knew what we had to do!

We ordered a Fancy Croissant dinner, which included four ham, egg and cheese croissants, home fries, fresh fruit, and a platter of assorted pastries. On the porch, we set up a folding table and adorned it with a baby blue tablecloth, multicolored gerbera daisies, and a hefty plate of food! Seeing my grandma again for the first time in months, I was disappointed that I wouldn’t be able to hug her but felt grateful that we were still able to make her feel special. ENTERTAINMENT NOW

Some Good News with John Krasinski

We could all use some good news right now

By IRELAND CLARK

I think it’s pretty clear to see that the world is in a bit of a mess and people are running around blind. It appears that the chaos, confusion, anger and fears with the Coronavirus pandemic aren’t going to simmer down anytime soon. In a world like ours, it’s important to take everything day by day and to try to look at the bright side. It’s hard, but with some help from YouTube and Jim from The Office you’ll be able to finally laugh and smile for a few minutes a day.

Some Good News or SGN for short, is a series on YouTube hosted by actor John Krasinski. The videos range from anywhere to less than 10 minutes to almost half an hour. The overall concept of the show is to spread good news from around the world. With so much bad news out there, it’s helpful and uplifting to share some good news. John Krasinski brings a warmth and lightheartedness to the videos and it’s guaranteed to make you smile or cry. Or both. Some of his popular videos include a video all about the graduating Class of 2020. If you’re feeling sad and upset about your graduation being cancelled or postponed, this episode is sure to help alleviate some of the weight on your shoulders and put a smile on your face. Some other stand out episodes include the video that he did with NASA, the Prom 2020, and his interview with his fellow The Office castmate Steve Carell.

But, where’s the good in that?

In these dark times, it’s easy to shut yourself in your room and wallow in every bad feeling ever. But, where’s the good in that? It’s hard sometimes to get back up after such a hard blow like this, but John Krasinski’s Some Good News could be the one thing that helps you get back up. The series is so great and warm, and it just fills you up with hope that there is more good in the world than bad. Maybe his videos will even inspire you to put some good out into the world and make a change.

Elon Musk’s and Grimes’ Baby

And why their baby boy is named X Æ A-12

By MADISON NESTOR

In the midst of the Coronavirus, tech-billionaire Elon Musk and singer Grimes welcomed their baby boy on May 4. The couple has been together since May of 2018 and first revealed the pregnancy in January after Grimes made a post on Instagram describing how hard it has been to work while pregnant.

“feel like I was woefully ill prepared cuz I dunno if pregnancy is as visible or discussed as it should be. I just didn’t rly understand what I was getting into. It’s been good too, but it makes working a lot harder.” In her caption she urged others to share their pregnancy stories after sharing her own complications. Grimes mentioned that she had a few complications early on, but a better second trimester.

The baby’s birth was confirmed on Twitter, and after users questioned what the child was named Elon responded with X Æ A-12. Grimes later tweeted what her baby’s unique name meant.

And why their baby boy is named X Æ A-12 X stands for the unknown variable. Æ is Grimes’ elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence). A- 12 is the precursor to SR-17 (the couple’s favorite aircraft). She elaborated on the aircraft more and tweeted “No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent" Finally, the A also stands for Archangel, her favorite song. The pronunciation of this unique name has not been confirmed by the couple but is speculated to be “Ecks Ash A minus 12”.

Elon Musk’s sense of humor was displayed on May 4 after he posted a photo of X Æ A-12 with a face tattoo filter. The couple has not yet mentioned any nicknames for the child.

Jimmy Donaldson’s creative mind comes to play. By MICHAEL BOYD

YouTuber known as MrBeast, held an online charity event on April 25 known as the Creator Games. It was a rock/paper/scissors tournament where influencers would battle it out for the grand prize of 250,000 dollars that would be donated to a charity of their choosing. The livestream lasted over 3 hours and raised over 1 million dollars to battle the Covid-19 pandemic. With 32 influencers only one could take victory, Matthew Haag, also known as Nadeshot, decided to donate the prize money to the Covid- 19 relief program. The event had a guest appearance of Jack Black, the first influencer to lose to Nadeshot. The influencers involved are shown in the picture below.

This is not the first charity that MrBeast has held. He also co-founded Team Trees, a fundraiser that raised over 20 million for that program. Great news to fellow theatre geeks! For a limited time, the YouTube channel, “The Shows Must Go On!” streams different Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals every week. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy beloved productions—all while supporting a good cause!

Money Heist

A must watch show on Netflix…

By LOGHAN HIRKEY

Over the years I have always been finding shows to top my favorite, most recently The Office was my favorite. However, after finding this Spanish show I have once again changed my mind. (Don’t worry, they have English voiceovers, no caption reading required.) This action-packed show will leave you in gasps, laughter, and tears. I just wish it was on more platforms than Netflix.

Money Heist has four seasons, (with the fourth one coming out about a month ago,) and is about Spain’s most criminal fugitives. These fugitives are called by “The Professor,” a brilliant, and frankly, the hottest character on the show, to complete the ultimate heist. Within the seasons they are called upon to rob the Royal Mint, and the Bank of Spain. The characters accept this challenge and go into hiding with The Professor to plan the great heists. Relationships are formed, insane plans are told, and many guns are pulled out, (usually on each other,) I was hooked on the show from the first episode and watched all four seasons in four days.

Not only is the storyline exciting and original, the dynamic personalities of all the characters will make you love and appreciate every single one. I promise you that you will not even want to glance at your cellphone during this suspenseful show.

The next time you think to yourself, “wow, I am bored” hop onto Netflix and watch Money Heist. I guarantee you will not regret it, and if you do? Please do not speak to me. I am kidding, slightly.

Saturday Night Live, From Home

The shows shift from studios to living rooms

BY JOSIE GALELLA

Schools and workplaces across the globe have made the move from in person to online as a result of quarantine, and Saturday Night Live decided to join them for the second time on April 25 (the first time was April 11). Where most TV production was postponed during these difficult times, SNL took advantage of the sight ‘Zoom’ in order to produce the 45th season of their weekly comedic skits from home.

The show does its best to make light out of its current situation, starring guests like Larry David as Bernie Sanders, Brad Pitt as Dr. Fauci, cast member Chloe Fineman as recent Netflix star Carole Baskin, and Tom Hanks as himself in order to keep up the show’s theme of jokes centered around today’s current events. It was announced in early April that these changes would take place, and the first from home episode aired on the 11. In his opening monologue, Tom Hanks took the opportunity to both open up and joke about his recent diagnosis of Covid-19, while reminding viewers to both stay home and stay positive.

While this first online episode was initially meant to be a one-time trial run, it proved to be worth it as fans expressed their excitement for SNL to continue as such. While the lack of a live audie nce can make for an uncomfortable joke delivery, it is quickly forgotten. We can’t help but laugh from home.

Normal Again?

When Will the U.S. Lift its Restrictions?

What to Expect Post Quarantine

By STEPHEN EL

The fight against COVID-19 will not just simply be over once the country reopens. But there seems to be a question on everyone's mind, when will things go back to normal? No one really knows for certain, but it will not be any time soon. Early inaction left us with too many new cases, and with only one option; press the pause button on society. While these social-distancing tactics of 6 feet are doing their job to decrease new cases, it is at the cost of the economy. Once restrictions relax more, what can you expect? Well for starters, it will take quite a while for people to begin to feel comfortable going out again (at least 3 to 4 months for some) and most businesses will likely still uphold the ‘mask required’ policy for at least a couple months after restrictions are lifted. Simply put, life will not return to how we knew it for a long time. We, as a whole, would most likely not be returning to life as we knew it till around the beginning of next year. That is only if we are lifted from lockdown in the next 2 months. Everyone will still be wary in the near future and precautions will still be taken.

But, as a plus, we will probably see an increase of sales of pretty much everything to stimulate the economy after the long dry spell this virus has caused. Everyone will be purchasing things to help bring the economy back up.

Once the economy stabilizes more, we will, as a whole, begin our return to somewhat normalcy. Until then, all we can do it be patient and wait for life to go back to what it once was.
