Scenic West Country Paintings On Show at The Powderham Castle Antiques & Fine Art Fair

Paintings of the Exe Estuary, St Ives Harbour and Kingswear and Dartmouth castles will be a major attraction at The Powderham Castle Antiques & Fine Art Fair, 16th – 18th November 2012.

Art dealer Derek Newman of Newman Fine Art from Gloucestershire will be offering a collection of A panoramic view towards Star Cross and early English watercolours that include local views by Powderham, by Francis Danby (1793-1861). highly collected artists Francis Danby, William Lyons- Watercolour. £3,500. From Newman Fine Art. Wilson, Samuel Cook and Alfred Townsend.

Francis Danby (1793-1861) probably stayed at the Globe Inn, Exmouth, which is still there today, from where his painting depicts a panoramic view towards Star Cross and Powderham. This fine and historic picture shows the early use of bathing huts, enclosed by a fence to keep rabbits away. Danby, who for a time lived in Bristol, had a lifelong interest in boat building and his move to the coast in later life allowed him to indulge in building and sailing boats in and around the estuary of the . His exploits were not without danger as in 1860 when he was aged 67 he was shipwrecked off Axmouth in his new yacht, the Dragon Fly.

St Ives is a picturesque holiday location for thousands of visitors and a view of fishermen and their boats by Alfred O. Towsend (1846-1917) dates 1904 when the artistic community was flourishing and is sure to appeal to collectors. A view of Dartmouth and Kingswear castles by the well-known painter Samuel Cook of Plymouth (1806-1859) is another picture with charm and historic appeal. Continued…/ William Lyons-Wilson (1892-1981) is a much admired Somerset artist who was an inspiring teacher at Blundell's School, Tiverton, Devon, and King's College, Taunton, Somerset for thirty years. His paintings are held by the Imperial War Museum and Exeter Museum. His atmospheric view of Harbour, dated 1951, looks across the Exe Estuary towards Powderham.

The Powderham Castle Antiques & Fine Art Fair is the most prestigious event of its kind in the Southwest. Exhibits start from less than £30 for a Victorian silver spoon to more than £10,000 for the finest oil paintings and Georgian furniture. Thirty-eight exhibitors offer everything from 19th century Japanese ivory carvings to the most exquisite country cottage oak furniture, Persian rugs, fine jewellery, Exeter marked silver, Continental porcelain and stylish Mid-Century Modern furniture.

Many exhibitors are long established West Country antiques specialist. Ashburton dealers Apollo Antiques will be showing furniture, ranging from Georgian and Victorian pieces to chic 1960s and 70s furniture. Also from Devon, John Collins & Son will be showing a range of original 19th and early 20th century oils and watercolours and furniture including rare gout early 19th century stool.

Powderham Castle is the historic family home of the . Standing in magnificent parklands, the medieval Castle of Powderham has views over the picturesque River Exe. Powderham Castle dates from around 1390 when it was begun by Sir Philip Courtenay, ancestor of the present Earl of Devon. It was extensively damaged during the Civil War and considerable restoration and alteration followed during the 18th and 19th centuries. Today the castle offers a succession of magnificent Halls and State Rooms filled with lavish furnishings, tapestries and historic portraits of the Courtenay family, whose home it has been for over 600 years. The breathtaking Grand Staircase was once part of the Medieval Great Hall. A visit to the fair provides limited access to the rooms, where the fair is hosted.
