4 REVELATIONS: (AND IT CAME TO PASS)

Following the distribution of the M ay issue of the Flyball Record, the M olten M agnets received the item shown on the previous page, thus confirming the F.I.B.S [Flyball Investigators – (Boob Section)] suspicions that the perpetrators have multiplied.

The Magnets flag was indeed kidnapped at the Anglesey Tournament (full details to be published in the November issue) and prompted the statement below from the original S.B.S (Special Boob Squadron).

It has come to our notice that a group calling themselves the S.B.S (Special Boob Squad) were in action at the July 2005 Anglesey show.

The real and original S.B.S carried out two missions involving the Molten Magnet’s flag at Anglesey and Daventry in 2004. Any activities since then have been the work of copycat impostors.

The real S.B.S are now deployed on more noteworthy duties and have therefore been disbanded with no intention of reforming. They do not wish to be associated with recent events, allegedly involving ransom demands, for the return of the original and the use of a replacement flag, which we, as professional operators cannot condone.

It was therefore felt that the time had come for the original S.B.S to reveal themselves as…

Hi there Flyballers,

I hope you are all having a fantastic flyballing summer. There have certainly been some 'hot' tournaments so far this summer; Nuneaton and Frimley Lodge with temps over 30oC to name but two.

With these high temperatures in mind, it does concern me to see some handlers re-running their dogs to correct an early changeover fault. Fine if the opposition also need to re-run a dog (usually with huge panic and excitement), but what's the 'point' if the other team has already or is about to finish. The dogs just get exhausted quicker and all for the sake of possibly one flyball point!

On the subject of points, I was amazed at the outcry from a few members when the Pickering Show results unfortunately went missing. The Committee can not allocate flyball points to dogs without the official race sheets to confirm, race times, dogs that ran etc. It serves no purpose shouting at the Committee that we should have a rule to cover every 'what if' you could think of. Sometimes unforeseen situations arise where any governing body has to make what it sees as an unbiased adjudication, fair to all members. It was unfortunate that it happened to The Tykes, but to their credit they tried every way they could to recover the lost paperwork that eventually turned up some three weeks later at the Coventry sorting office. One lesson to be learnt from all this, copy everything to make sure your tournament is not famous for the wrong reason.

Happy flyballing and I hope to see you all at the Summer Championship.

Chris Fulford (Bad Dog Racers)

THE BOX-LOADER’S PLIGHT

It’s a box-loader’s plight When you don’t know your left from your right. The judge shouts “Are you ready?” You say “yes”, ‘though you feel unsteady.

The dogs start to run. For them it’s just fun. Then you notice a light. And it gives you a fright.

Was it Fly or was it Floss? You are completely at a loss. Which side? - is your call To load that extra ball.

Then the race is all over And you feel all in clover. Oh, it makes a box-loader’s life When you get your lefts and rights right.

Tigger

Well, he’s made it! I thought that the day would never arrive when Tigger would become a Flyball Dog. I first took him to training in Autumn 2002 and we watched the show at Mona that Christmas.

A year of training followed that mainly consisted of waiting for Tigger to come back. He loved racing, but had to run around the field, saying hello to dogs and people after each run. Finally we risked it; he ran in the starters at the Christmas show 2003. The following year, either he quivered on the line and refused to run, ran, then hid under the judge’s chair, ran, then hid under the lights table or – did a perfect run!

He came out of starters in December 2004 and has been running beautifully. Many thanks to all of you who have helped in the process by patiently waiting or helping to catch, especially Pods members.

Did I mention, Tigger is a Staffie cross?

Head Judges Report

It was my pleasure once again to be invited to be Head Judge at this year’s Live Wires Tournament at the excellent Sutton Fields venue with great facilities.

Seven Divisions raced over the weekend and there was some fine racing in all of them. In a separate ring there were also Starter Divisions, pairs and singles. I was more than pleased to see my dog Fern, who is almost 11 years old, win the veteran class with a time of 5.16 seconds.

It was also nice to see the Ramsay Raiders again all the way from the Isle of Man, whom I believe plundered first prize in the starters.

The weather was mixed with the odd heavy shower, but all in all I think we could consider ourselves fortunate to have finished the racing on the Sunday before a thunderstorm struck the venue.

As ever the Live Wires put in a lot of hard work to make sure the tournament was a success. Well done!

9 Judge’s Report – Division Three

I woke with a mixture of excited nerves and disappointment at the Live Wires show, May 22nd. My excitement at the prospect of judging Division Three was subdued by the sadness that we had to pull the PODS team from Division One racing. One dog with a pulled muscle and another with an injured paw had meant that we had two lame dogs – a non-starter in a team of four. The morning was gloriously sunny, but the black thunderclouds were never far away on the horizon.

With the wonderful Cheshire Set for ring party in the morning, the racing got underway on time. Thanks to PODs and Magnets for ring partying in the afternoon, helping me with those sticky lights. With a seven team round robin, we had a lot of races to get through. Credit goes to the teams in this division for getting organised quickly, sticking to the two-minute rule and being wonderful sports. Despite some uncertainties with the lights (isn’t there always) the racing was fast, furious and with some exciting finishes where I had to check with the timers for the results. Although a number of teams were jumping 15” the race times were really good and I was very impressed by the consistent changes.

Judge’s Report Division Five

It was very, very early on the Saturday morning (3am to be precise) and the flyball was horrendous - dogs running amok, lights flashing on and off, balls flying everywhere etc. It was just as bad at 4am and even worse when I woke again at 5am. Was I just a little over-anxious about my first open judging appointment at the Live Wires tournament later that day? Definitely yes!

Happily, I can report that the reality was far more straightforward than my imaginings. In fact, dare I say, I even enjoyed myself. Despite the complication of 3 out of the 5 teams running with break out times, everything seemed to go very smoothly. There was the usual smattering of red lights, one case of interference and a brief hiccough with the lights but otherwise, no real problems at all.

Thank you to the teams of Division.Five for providing some brilliant and close racing and congratulations to the eventual winners Nova Next Generation. My thanks also to the Colours, Dolphins and Ramsey for their support as ring party, with a special mention of the line judges from Dolphins who were particularly helpful and reassuring - just what I needed. Thanks to you all I emerged relatively unscathed and prepared to do it all again (hopefully next time without any lost sleep). So, if any of you are short of a judge for a lower division and Live Wires are at your tournament, I would be grateful for the opportunity (providing you don’t mind a relatively novice judge).

For the Attention of all would-be Head Judges

The Committee are currently reviewing the criteria for approving Head Judges. Due to there being tournaments every weekend since the AGM, it has been impossible to convene a full meeting. The committee would like to discuss this important issue in depth at their forthcoming meeting. Members who are thinking about applying for Head Judge status should wait until the new criteria is published, before sending in an application.

TALKING DOG FOR SALE

A man saw a sign in front of a house: TALKING DOG FOR SALE. He rang the bell and the owner told him the dog was in the backyard. The man went into the backyard and saw a black mutt just sitting there. “You talk?” he asked. “Sure do” the dog replied. “So what’s your story?” The dog looked up and said, "Well, I discovered my gift of talking pretty young and I wanted to help the government, so I told MI5 about my gift, and in no time they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies eight years running. The jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger and I wanted to settle down. So I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security work, mostly wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings there and was awarded a batch of medals. I had a wife, a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired."

The man was amazed. He went back in and asked the owner what he wanted for the dog. The owner said, “Ten quid.” The man said, “This dog is amazing, why on earth are you selling him so cheaply?” “Cause he’s a liar…he’s never done any of that stuff!”

WELL DONE EVERYONE

Harley

Hello, my name’s Harley. My mum’s a member of the Sherwood Outlaws and my step-sister does this thing called flyball. I am a rescue dog and haven’t had a very good start in life. I’m a tri-coloured Border Collie about eighteen months old. I was found, painfully thin, on the streets, and I have more hang-ups than a roll of wallpaper. My hobbies are: chasing anything that moves, getting hysterical over reflections and anything that looks like a torch, all wildlife, cats, flies (the big fat buzzing ones are very tasty!) running off and only coming back when I’m good and ready. I have perfected the glazed look on my face when I’m told to do something and I excel in the art of creeping and looking cute.

One day my mum took me to one of these flyball things and WOW this looked like fun. We watched the dogs racing up and down the jumps and coming back with a ball. I barked and barked and ran up and down on my lead behind the netting until my poor mum’s arm was aching. I met all the other dogs in the Outlaws teams and decided there and then that I was going to be a flyball dog, especially when that cute little collie Nell flashed her eyes at me – what a babe!

Anyway, mum has started training me in the back garden as she says I’m not obedient enough yet to be let loose with the other dogs, or anything else for that matter!

I can do 4 jumps back to mum without running out and I have a special toy that I play with when I get it right. Mum thinks I have potential as I am fast (she calls me the flying toast rack, is that a compliment?) and that I need to channel my energy into something fun rather than the hang-ups from my past.

I really enjoy this flyball thing, and one day I hope to be running with the team – that will do my street cred a lot of good. Pity about that damn visit to the vets!

Val Parkin (Sherwood Outlaws)

14 NEW THREAT TO FLYBALL TEAMS FOR 2005 - LATEST UPDATE

I feel composed enough to write a piece that will do justice to a recent experience in my life!

It finally arrived, our own club show weekend at Sutton Fields - home to the Live Wires teams. The planning, organisation, setting up etc. came to fruition and even the threatened rain held back (apart from the odd shower) until prize-giving. There was no sign to indicate the impending significant event. My young dog ran in the victorious starter team - was that it? NO. I captained the newly registered team, Wire Sparks - we came second, was that it? NO. We clubbed together to put on a buffet supper and social in the club - house on Saturday night, was that it? NO. Are you remotely intrigued? Well, earlier in the day I had gone to the car to swap dogs (not literally) and noticed a strange package on the back seat. Racing beckoned so I was unable to investigate but I thought, how nice, someone had given me a gift, ah… On my return I started to unwrap it somewhat expectantly, then a strange feeling started to creep through me. M aybe because I had been reading the current copy of The Record I began to think, could this really be what I had dared to hope it might be? EUREKA! THE HOLY GRAIL! No, it was NELLIE. I was ‘gob smacked’ (apologies to my old English teacher). I confess to feeling quite giddy. I was torn between wanting to tell people but aware of the code of ethics regarding discretion and secrecy. WOW, would my life ever be the same again? Naively I told Val who smiled knowingly and who then arranged to give it out over the tannoy that Nellie was on the showground somewhere. Once home and unpacked, I sat on the couch with a dog either side (I knew I should have ordered the bigger one) and a mug of Ovaltine Lite inside me - do I know how to live or what? I digested the day's events and studied the rules of engagement when housing Nellie. I rang the number given but it was out of order. Undaunted I called Val to seek her advice and she traced the fault as no credit on the said mobile! Life went on and contact was duly made. By the time you read this, Nellie will be in her new home. With everything going on at the moment re jump heights etc., I for one see this as an opportunity to inject some fun into our sport. It is light hearted, but let's all embrace the opportunity and if you are chosen to receive her, then please carry on in the spirit in which she has been campaigned so far. There are plans afoot to obtain a symbol of ownership, possibly car stickers (eat your heart out you holders of Blue Peter badges!), more details to follow. Sue Blyth (Live Wires)

Before leaving Sue, Nellie had some exciting visits, as you can see below (Ed)

15 THE BALLAD OF SID, CLINT AND NELLIE

With all that Nellie had been through What the Crazies decided to do, Was send her on a weekend away, Somewhere she could go and play!

They thought and thought - where could that be? It must be Blackpool by the Sea! So she arrived on the train, Just for a change it didn't rain!

To help her forget her little ordeal Nellie at The Flying Handbag They took her for a decent meal! Only the best, those fish and chips Left her full up, and licking her lips

Next they decided to hit the town, She looked at the pub's name with a frown! "The Flying Handbag" what a place . . . A big smile came over her face!

They went inside and had a few drinks, She got her bum pinched and lots of winks! The lagers flowed with Clint and Sid. . . . . Nellie at Funny Girls Have a good time? They certainly did!

They also went to "Funny Girls" Were those fellas in high heels and curls? Ladies on the stage looked swell Or were they men - she couldn't tell!

In Blackpool you can see some sights! Lots of places to go - especially at nights! On to another club they did go . . . Was it really called the PINK Flamingo? Nellie at the Pink Flamingo You might know that Sid and Clint Would take her to somewhere PINK!! That Handbag place was Sid's idea He's into bags and all that gear!

Onto the Casino they did go, Sid and Clint were in full flow Playing poker at the table Cheating of course - when they were able!

The next day after getting some kip With great enthusiasm and full of zip, They decided to go out for an hour, And spend some time up Blackpool Tower.

16 They went to the beach to sit on the sand, Kids making castles, Nellie gave them a hand! Went for a paddle in the sea, Didn't go far - only up to her knee.

Finally the reason that she had come To have a ride on "The Big One" To the pleasure beach they did go But when she saw it she said NO!

They held her tight once in the gate, Paid five quid each and made her wait. For ages they all stood in the queue, And all she wanted was the loo!

The thought of that ride that went so high Reaching grandly up to the sky! Made her weak and nearly faint, Feeling sorry for her - Sid and Clint ain’t!

Finally she was at the head of the queue No way back, what could she do! She sat in the carriage and shut her eyes, Speechless now - she was up in the skies.

Climbing up the steep incline . . . She daren't look, can't change her mind. Looks across and sees the sea Thinking "wish it wasn't me!"

Sid and Clint are on each side, Making sure she stays on the ride. At the top - sudden stop and jolt, Then hurtling down like a thunderbolt.

She screams when it comes to the drop, Her stomach's left behind, what a shock! Whizzing round those railway tracks, Sympathy is what she lacks.

All too soon the ride is over, Then she's feeling like she's in clover! Holds her breath, and then she said That was great - can we go again!

Sid and Clint said we've got no time. . . Clint holding Nellie captive Your stay has reached the end of the line. before her ride on Onto your next place - you must go. . . “The Big One” Where you'll end up - we do not know!!

Brandi Retires

Tom Cox from the Ball Busters, is regrettably retiring his older dog, Brandi, from flyball. This is due to a shoulder injury she sustained away from flyball.

Brandi gained her Flyball Dog Award at her first competition with the Ball Busters, gaining her Flyball Dog Intermediate Award three competitions later. She was just 121 points short of her Flyball Dog Graduate Award.

Brandi was always very shy We never thought she would have a try At Flyball, but she proved us wrong And her bark was really like a song. Always reliable and fast She tackled any Flyball task. But now she has to retire from sport And she leaves us with just one thought Brandi, you are one of the winning sort.

The BB line up won’t be the same without you, but all the Ball Busters club members wish you a long and happy retirement.

Judge’s Report Division Six

My third summer show at Daventry and I was very pleased to be asked to judge Division six. This six- team division had some wonderful racing, good sportsmanship and tight finishes. Bristol Ballistic Extrase t got faster and faster through the division, and with their little border terrier height dog, gave each team a run for their money. They came sixth with a best time of 21.59. Timber Wolves had some new handlers and it was lovely to see a GSD working well and the enthusiasm of the handler infected the team. They came fifth with a best time of 20.88. Maple Leaf Rockies kept it ‘clean’ against the slower teams and pushed it against the faster teams, to come a creditable fourth with a best time of 19.86. It was lovely to see a bearded collie (Bella) running in this team. Maple Leaf Rockies had a dead heat in their race with the Grasshopper Express, showing how closely fought and well matched this division was. In third place were the Coventry Racers (19.81) who made very few mistakes and only lost to the faster teams. In second place were the Molten Muzzles (19.78) who raced with a new handler on starts (well done) and with a very fast anchor dog. In first place were the Grasshopper Express (19.97), who were unbeaten all day and raced with tight changes, good starts and very few mistakes.

20 Judge s Re port Di vi si on Ei ght

We really enjoyed bringing our Grasshopper Express team down to this venue, its great for dog walks and the running surface for Flyball takes some beating.

As always the ‘ Magnets’ put on a very well organised event, the racing went like clockwork; five divisions and the presentation over by 7pm – that was great. Neil obviously wanted to make the weekend a nostalgic event and dusted the mothballs off the old ‘Tornado’ lights, which he ran with a posh generator, and I have to say there were very few problems encountered from what I could see on the Sat u r d ay .

I was allocated Division Eight to judge which was interesting in that I had a team ‘break out’, one went NFC after one race, and one had a dog more interested in the opposition’s dogs than the flyball.

We all enjoyed the day and thanks again to the Molten Magnets, the stopwatches for Judges were a good idea.

I hope Tony sorted out the ‘hot coal’ business with the rubbish skip. It’s a lesson to be learnt by people having barbecues at flyball events, make absolutely sure the coals really are cold before you place them in a skip. Fortunately there was no damage and injury. (Ed’s comment: On that note, the team in question did come forward and apologised profusely).

21 The Naming of Teams (Part Two)

The name for our Team Proved not to be easy. We suggested and bantered And laughed until wheezy. We wrote them all down And from the sum of our parts We decided it had to Include the word “Herts”

From each of our membership We asked for an idea And they thought long and hard, During the year. They tried to be helpful And thoughtful and fun, And names flooded in Once we’d begun!

Some were quite catchy, And some? I’m no prude But it has to be said, Were incredibly rude! Themes based on speed, On cards or on age, The list it was endless And filled a whole page. One we quite liked We were over the moon Until someone suggested It was like M ills & Boon!

But finally it came to us, Clear as a bell, After our first tournament, When we’d done so well Our dogs had been racing, And so had our hearts, So what more appropriate than Team Racing Herts!

Pam Bowyer (Racing Herts)

CLEAN – UP TIME

Humans like to clean up their dogs from time to time. When it’s time for your clean up, enjoy the chase, but give your human hope by letting them catch you briefly before you slip away again. This is a really good way of transferring your dirt onto your human’s clothes.

Judges Report Division Two

The first ever tournament to be put on by the Doncaster Belle Stars at what can only be described as a fabulous location. There was wide-open flat parkland as far as the eye could see, and a brilliant woodland circular dog walk, plus the good weather as well to go with it all.

I was the Judge of Division Two, a seven-team division that had some excellent, close racing. The host team, the Belle Stars looked good all day and won this division. They gelled well as a team and never lost a race. A good all round division and a credit to you all.

I would like to add my congratulations to the Belle Stars on a great first tournament. Everything went like clockwork (didn’t it Debbie).

JUDGE’S REPORT

Askham Bryan is a venue and event very dear to a great many flyballers’ hearts and this year just reminded us all, why? Firstly, the site is almost cosy and always lovely and clean as well as very pretty. Then, the Tykes must be one of the top Tournament Hosts in the country. They are always so well organised, keen to please and happy to help – a joy to compete with. How sad that we are losing three of the main characters (Kath, Gary and David) to the sun in Spain. The final ingredient is the teams and what a wonderful bunch you are; magnificently sporting, loads of fun and producing some incredibly close and hard fought racing. It doesn’t get much better than that. Or…so I thought!

Then came the latest sport to arrive in the UK – HUMAN FLYBALL! If I hadn’t been there myself to witness this spectacle, I certainly would not have believed it. Let me talk it through for those who missed it and remind those who took part exactly what you got up to!

It all started after the evening meal when Kath Robson had her cheeky face on and decided this would be a great idea. No-one thought she was serious and just paid lip service when she went round with a pad and pen asking for human teams and names.

26 What came out of it were some very interesting names and some very unusual racing! Each team declared a time and, in the event of a tie, the team with the closest to their declared time would win. Each team had to get 4 humans up and down the lane with a ball (they were allowed to trigger the box any way they wanted). So, then they were off…

First up were the Doncaster Dog M urderers who beat the ‘poo’ out of the Kellibellies in the first race, although some of their changeovers looked a bit suspect to me. Next we had Nigel’s Nymphs racing against Howard’s Harem and (let me tell you) that was a sight to behold! Never did I dream I would see Howard Campbell running up and down the flyball lane and giggling as he went! Mind you, the competitive spirit was very much present but, sadly for them, wasn’t quite strong enough to get over the line before Nigel’s Nymphs. The next team name caused a few titters, which was pertinent as it was Len Titterington’s team, who called themselves the Red Rose Rankers (at least that’s what it sounded like!). They were scheduled against the Cheshire Windbreaks who, most unfortunately, had one of their team take a fall that, sadly, cost them the race. I hope the bruising has gone down a bit now, Joanne? I think it was around this point that some dirty tricks emerged. Certain female members of the Red Rose Rankers (who shall remain nameless) were seen attempting to put off the male members of some of the teams by kneeling behind the boxes and whipping their tops up as the men approached! I’m not sure if it put any of them off but they certainly seemed to want to re-run quite a bit! The last race was between the Blackpool Superhumans and the youngest element, the Killer Kids. Despite their valiant efforts, the Kids were knocked out in the early stages by Blackpool who went on to win the match in a nail-biting final with Doncaster Dog M urderers. It was a shame for the Doncaster team as they were actually interfered with by a Tyke on the last run!

Acting as Head Judge for this event was a delight and an education and I do believe that (even though these teams only ran over 8 inches) no-one who took part will ever criticise their dogs for not doing a perfect job ever again! I could have sworn I heard muffled grizzly sniggering coming from the dogs at the end of all this!

I am led to understand that photographic evidence of this new sport will be available on the BFA website in the not-too-distant future and I truly hope you all enjoy it and that this was just the first of many Human Flyball events (mind you I think some of us need to do some getting fit first!).

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR BEING SUCH GOOD SPORTS AND GIVING KATH AND GARY SUCH A GOOD SEND-OFF

Maria Brennan (Flying Colours)

29 IF I DID NOT HAVE DOGS…

1. I could walk around the yard barefoot in safety.

2. My house could be carpeted instead of tiled and laminated.

3. All flat surfaces, clothing, furniture and cars would be free of dog hair.

4. When the doorbell rings it wouldn’t sound like the NCDL kennels.

5. When the doorbell rings, I could get to the door without wading through dog bodies who beat me there.

6. I could sit on the couch the way I wanted, without taking into consideration how much space several fur bodies would need to get comfortable.

7. I would not have strange presents under my Christmas tree – like dog bones, stuffed animals or have to answer to people why I wrap them.

8. I would not be on a first name basis with three vets.

9. The most used words in my vocabulary would not be “out”, “sit”, “down”, “come”, “no”, “stay” and “leave him/her/it ALONE”.

10. My house would not be cordoned off into zones with baby gates or barriers.

11. My pockets would not contain things like poo bags, dog treats and an extra leash.

12. I would no longer have to spell the words B-A-L-L or F-R-I-S-B-E-E or W-A-L-K.

13. I would not have as many leaves INSIDE my house as outside.

14. I would not look strangely at people who think having their ONE dog ties them down too much.

15. I’d look forward to spring and the melting of the snow instead of dreading “mud season”.

16. I would not have to answer the question “Why do I have so many dogs?” from people who never have the joy in their life of knowing they are loved unconditionally by something as close to an angel as they will ever get.

17. How empty life would be…
