FEBRUARY 2019 Mr. Show Business

egendary performer Sammy Davis, Jr. famously called himself “the only black, Puerto Rican, one-eyed, Jewish entertainer in the world.” This true original was also a bona fide trailblazer: he was the first African American to be invited by the President to spend a night at the White House. He risked his career, before the civil rights era, by doing impressions of white celebrities in his nightclub act. And who can forget the surprise kiss he L planted on Archie Bunker’s face in one of the most famous episodes of All in the Family? The entertainment icon known as Mr. Show Business is the subject of Sammy Davis, Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me, premiering this month on . Directed by Sam Pollard, it is the first major documentary to examine Davis’ vast talent and his journey for identity through the shifting tides of civil rights and racial progress during 20th-century America.

Born in Harlem in 1925, Davis began performing with his vaudevillian father at age three, and soon became the main attraction of The Will Mastin Trio before breaking out as a solo act in the 1950s. A founding member of Frank Sinatra’s , he sold out shows in Las Vegas and starred in Ocean’s 11 (1960) and other hit movies. His star continued to rise with chart-topping singles like “I’ve Gotta Be Me” and “The Candy Man.” He was the first black actor to kiss a white co-star on a Broadway stage and attracted sold-out crowds in his later years during a 1988 tour with Sinatra and Dean Martin.

Davis was one of the most successful performers of his day, but he was often the target of the bigotry of white America and the distaste of black America – who labeled him a sellout due to his mainstream success. His embracement of Judaism linked his identity to yet another persecuted minority.

Featuring new interviews with Billy Crystal, Norman Lear, Jerry Lewis, Whoopi Goldberg, and Kim Novak, never-before-seen photographs from RIGHT: 1965 AP Davis’ personal collection and excerpts from his television, film and PREMIERES SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23 AT 11PM concert performances, Sammy Davis, Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me explores the Learn more at .org/americanmasters life and art of a uniquely gifted entertainer who paved the way for Preview more American Masters films at watch.wliw.org
