FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

I know I often mention communication in my report but I strongly of professional women sharing their journey with our students. The message of the believe that effective communication is a key element of home day was #balanceforbetter and the clear message is that we need to advocate for and school relationships. I want to give you some feedback on the online reporting system that was introduced in semester 2 our students. Further in this newsletter you can see that other students attended last year. A parent wrote: the BlueScope Steel event.

“The new process to access my daughter’s school report electronically was really simple. I followed the instructions on the letter sent to parents, which allowed me to login into the portal using a unique identifier. Once there, it was easy to locate and read the school report. I loved this new process for a couple of reasons. The first is that my daughter is currently on exchange in Italy and I was able to send her a link to the portal, where she was able to read her report even though she is on the other side of the world. Secondly, it’s great to know that the school is thinking of innovative ways to save paper and reduce waste.”

Thanks for such positive feedback and I think the added bonus of reducing paper supports our continued War on Waste. I can also announce that our electronic calendar has been introduced. Students can access the calendar on our intranet and parents can access it on the school’s website. Click on “Student life” and the school calendar is in the drop down.

A visit to SnowyHydro covers

so much more than Electrical Engineering: Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, Civil works, Careers, The national electricity market and of course Snowy 2.0 where discussed.

The HR Manager Leanne, outlined SnowyHydro core values, employment pathways, holiday employment schemes and tertiary partnerships available to students with Wollongong University. The students where privileged to start and synchronize a 50Hz AC training generator direct to the national grid. What remains is the memory of the people we met at SnowyHydro who have a critical role to play in Australia’s energy security.

YEAR 10 LANGUAGES DAY at UOW Throughout the day we heard from previous HSC Language students who are now currently completing a degree at UOW. They discussed their language studies, study

abroad opportunities and gave advice for students studying a language. It was fascinating to hear how studying overseas can really help develop language skills and how placing yourself in the middle of a culture can extend on your language learning.

We went on a tour of the UOW campus while also incorporating our Italian skills into the activity. We answered questions about the location of certain buildings on campus in Italian which helped us to develop some new vocabulary.

Later on in the day we also created an Italian advertisement in small groups. We had 25 minutes to prepare our skits, and with the help of some new adjectives and expressions all the groups created an amazing act. The best skits were performed to the other schools, and in return we watched advertisements spoken in Japanese, Mandarin and French. Kiama High won the most popular skit!

Overall the Year 10 Language Day at the was an amazing experience.

The activities were designed specifically for Year 10 Language students, making them fun to take part in but also engaging and interesting.

VISUAL ARTS ‘ARTEXPRESS’ EXCURSION 2019

On Friday 8 March, Kiama High School’s Year 11 and 12 and a select group of Year 10 Visual Arts students attended an excursion to the Art Gallery of Gallery to view the 2019 ARTEXPRESS exhibition with Visual Arts teachers, Ms Russell and Ms Stehr.

ARTEXPRESS is a dynamic and popular exhibition that features a selection of the most outstanding student artworks developed for the artmaking component of

the HSC examination in Visual Arts from 2018.

The exhibition includes a broad range of approaches and expressive forms, including ceramics, collection of works, documented forms, drawing, graphic design, painting, photomedia, printmaking, sculpture, textiles and fibre, and time-based forms.

Students spent the morning examining the artworks and collecting information and inspiration for their own major Bodies of Work. The calibre of the work this year at the AGNSW was exceptionally high, and students took numerous photos of works which piqued their interest. As small selection of some of the amazing student works on show. After enjoying a break in the gallery café, the students were able to explore the other permanent and temporary exhibits in the gallery, including the Brett Whiteley All in all, this was an absolutely brilliant day for both students and teachers who were Drawing Exhibition. involved in this excursion. It was obvious that all students who attended were inspired in some way and thoroughly enjoyed themselves at each of the galleries. Each gallery contained stunning pieces that varied in size, approach, medium and Kate Stehr form. Students were asked to select and photograph three works that would Head Teacher CAPA and LOTE potentially provide inspiration for their current and future Bodies of Work.

NAPLAN 2019 FOR YEARS 7 AND 9

This year, NAPLAN will be conducted online at Kiama High School.

NAPLAN Online will provide better assessment, more precise results and faster turnaround of information. NAPLAN Online features ‘tailored testing’ which gives students questions that are more suited to their ability.

We will be running a practice test online with all Year 7 and 9 students from 25 March to 5 April. This 45-minute omnibus test will include a range of different types of questions to enable students to familiarise themselves with the formats for online testing. It will also assist the school in ensuring all technical requirements have been met.

The actual NAPLAN Online tests will take place on the following dates: Tuesday, May 14 – Friday, May 24. Students will be informed of their test sessions closer to the date.

Catch-up sessions will be conducted for absent students throughout the testing period.

STUDENTS WILL REQUIRE A SET OF COMPUTER COMPATIBLE EARBUDS/HEADPHONES FOR ALL TESTS.

You can help your child become familiar with NAPLAN Online by accessing the public demonstration site on the NAP website. The link is: http://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site
