JWC COMMENTATORS NOTES (contd)

History

Wales came 4th in 2008 and 6th in 2009, whilst Fiji finished 14th and 12th respectively. The two sides had not met before this tournament and Fiji will hope to get off to a better start than they did in the Pool match, when they were 21-3 down after just 24 minutes of the first half.

Wales fly half MATTHEW JARVIS kicked 14 points that day, with tries coming from MORGAN ALLEN, who starts this game on the replacements bench, ASHLEY BECK and BEN JOHN.

Experience

Wales have the most experienced squad in the tournament based on previous IRB Junior World Championship appearances and six of their starting line up played in Japan in 2009; hooker RHYS WILLIAMS, flanker , number 8 JAMES THOMAS, scrum half RHYS DOWNES, fly half MATTHEW JARVIS and inside centre ASHLEY BECK, who has scored two tries in this year’s tournament.

Fiji prop LEONG KWONG is the only member of their squad who was involved in the 2009 tournament but has lost all six matches in which he has been in the starting line up. Four of this year’s squad have started all Fiji’s matches in Argentina; captain SEVERO DOMONI, flanker KOLINIO NALASEKATA, scrum half JOSH MATAVESI, who has kicked 23 points in the tournament, and inside centre NAVITALAI RATULEVU.

Welsh centurion?

Wales fly half MATTHEW JARVIS needs just six more points to reach 100 in IRB Junior World Championship competition and is third in the all time individual points scorer list with 94. He needs 12 more points to overtake South Africa’s FRANCOIS BRUMMER in second place, with England’s TOM HOMER top of the table on 118 points.

The man in the middle

JACO PEYPER of South Africa takes charge of proceedings on Monday, his fourth match of the tournament and his first involving either of these two sides. In his most recent game he issued three yellow cards to Samoan players during their 37-10 defeat to Ireland and he has shown five yellow cards in total in three matches.
