Dear Friends,

The spirit of giving that we all feel may be especially taxed this year by the events in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, as well as the continuing crises in energy, health care, and the rising conditions of inequality throughout the country and the world. Let us not lose sight of the fact that, consistently and over time, a much smaller percentage of philan- thropic and relief dollars is contributed to women and girls, in spite of the fact that such dollars benefit women’s families as well as themselves. 1

Women’s funds all over the country have been working for decades to make visible and support women’s struggles in their communities. As one of the oldest funds (we celebrated our 20th anniversary last year), the Boston Women’s Fund is a national leader in these communal efforts.

The programs we fund empower women and girls to design and control their own initiatives for social change. To us, therefore, the spirit of giving is not about providing items like food, clothing and direct services. Rather it is about supporting and enabling women to claim and expand their (our!) share of resources in this society— resources for education, health care, jobs and community safety and wellbeing.

In this year, there have been continuing cutbacks in social programs. We hope that you will join us in giving more in these more difficult times. The need is greater than ever.

Sincerely,

Marilyn Glater and Frinde Maher, Co-chairs The Spirit of Giving
