Director Badges & Student Wristbands - will be ready for pick up on the day of the festival at the ticket booth of each Director’s first performance venue. These wristbands are good for Student & Director’s entire day including Evening Concert. TROPHY PICK UP will be AFTER the evening concert, prior to Finals, in the RHCC Foyer. Only Directors can pick up their trophies, and must show their Director badge.

Exception: IF you choose to distribute any food or drink items, you can do so ONLY in the LOWER PARKING LOT at RHCC, or in the parking lot at Folsom High School where your Bus or other student transportation vehicles are parked.

2 Directors, Please Remember - You are not allowed to serve food to your students at either campus / venue unless you are in the parking lots! This does not apply to food purchased at the event, only to food that you may have brought to feed your students. The Church has said that you may set up food distribution in the lower parking lot only, and the High School will allow this in their parking lots for the buses and support vehicles. Please adhere to this or you will be asked to take down your food and set up, and security will be called. These are Sacramento County guidelines for the School and the Church has their own rules. 5 DIRECTOR INFO Access Y our Director Badge and Gold Student Performer Wristbands will be available for pick up at Director check in. Check in is at the Ticket Booth of the Venue for your school’s FIRST performance of the day. Reminder: GOLD wristbands are for student performers only. Equipment Warm up: There are NO pianos, amps or drums in the warm up rooms. Only the jazz choir warm up room has a piano. REMEMBER - You must bring your own SNARE DRUM STAND. Performance: A bass amp, drum set and piano will be provided in the performance room for Jazz Bands, Choirs and Combos. Guitar players must bring their own guitar amp. Drummers must bring their own: Bass Drum Pedal, Snare Drum, SNARE STAND, Drum Throne, Cymbals & Felts and Complete Hi-Hat (Stand & Cymbal). There will be sound systems in the performance areas only. Only sixteen (16) mics are available to choirs for performance. Your Performance Bands and Choirs will get a 25 minute warm up, 25 minute performance and a 25 minute clinic. Combos will get a 25 minute time slot to warm up and and 25 minutes to perform. The clinic is held on stage if time allows. See maps on pages 6 & 7 for warm up & performance locations. Copies of Music Scores Music scores are NOT required! You can however, give scores to judges if you wish - Scores will NOT be returned!

Written Comments Y our clinician will provide you with the 3 judge's written comments in your Clinic. These Critique Sheets will also include your ratings (ie: I, II or III). Ratings Ratings will not be posted. Instead, they will be given to the Directors in the Clinic (see above in written comments). PERFORMANCE - Combos are scheduled in 25 minute performance slots. Combos - To keep this venue on time, Combos will not receive a written critique form following their performance. They will be scored and audio comments will be sent to your Dropbox account. No Verbal comments after performances.

FINALS - CHOIR FINALISTS WILL BE POSTED IN LOBBY BY 7:00 PM, BE READY TO PERFORM IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE NIGHT CONCERT & AWARDS (aprox. 8:00 pm).

SCORING SCORES ARE OUT OF 1000 POINTS TO AVOID TIES ETC. RATINGS WILL NOT BE POSTED. Ratings will be given to you in your clinic. Here is an example: (School name) I I I = Overall I Numerical score 860 943 834 = 2637 posted on website later Actual numerical scores will determine finalists. Choir Finalists will be posted at approximately 7:15 PM. All Others will be announced at the Awards Ceremony. IN CASE OF A TIE: We will throw out the highest and lowest score and end up with a score in the middle. This will eliminate the tie. If this still does not correct the problem we will have the judges decide! Example: Band #1 receives 853, 932, 868 TOTAL: 2653 (Throw out the high & low and end up with 868) Band #2 receives 844, 903, 906 TOTAL: 2653 (Throw out the high & low and end up with 903)

Note: If your application was sent in among the last 20 groups accepted, your division grouping may not reflect your actual school size. We tried to fill out all four divisions to be equal in size.

Finals Participants will be the top scoring: 5 High School Bands 3 Middle School Bands 4 Jazz Choirs * NO SIGHT READING! Each Group performs one (1) song/tune. Please limit your choice to no more than 5 minutes in total length. It can be one played/sung earlier in the competition or a new piece. The order of finalist groups will be determined by the Scorer drawing names from a hat. The four Jazz Choir finalists will be posted by 7:00 PM so they are ready to go at approximately 8:00 PM - Immediately following the night Concert & Awards. DIRECTORS PLEASE NOTE: It is important for Finals Directors to know who you follow. The list will be posted in the RHCC lobby. Plan on being side stage ready to go as each group only plays one song now and the pace will be quick. Plan on 5 minutes per group. * Middle School Choirs are eligible to perform in the Finals but are not eligible to win Sweepstakes.

15 DAY CONCERTS 12:15 PM - FOLSOM HS THEATER SACRAMENTO STATE JAZZ BAND Steve Roach - Director Our Jazz Ensembles are active in performing a wide variety of styles; from the cutting edge contemporary composers such as Maria Schneider, Jim McNeely, Vince Mendoza, Bill Holman and Bob Brookmeyer to the classics of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Thad Jones and Charles Mingus. The Ensembles are composed of standard big band instrumentation of five trumpets, four or five trombones, five woodwinds, piano, bass, guitar, drums and miscellaneous percussion. Music majors, non-music majors and students enrolled through the College of Extended Studies may participate in the Sac State Jazz Ensembles. Both large group ensembles perform regular concerts on campus and at top local, regional and international jazz festivals. In 2016, Jazz Ensemble I was the recipient of the college division outstanding Downbeat Student Music Award. And in 2010 & 2017, the ensemble took 1st place in the annual Reno Jazz Festival in the college division. Other accolades include being selected as a finalist in the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival numerous times. Prominent guest artists who have performed with the Sacramento State Jazz Ensemble include Dave Douglas, Eric Marienthal, Donny McCaslin, Ernie Watts, Kenny Werner, Carl Allen, Jon Faddis, Bobby Shew, Mark Levine and the Latin Tinge, Conrad Herwig, Bob Mintzer, Wayne Wallace, Ingrid Jensen, Tim Ries, John Fedchock, Geoff Keezer, Dave Pietro, Paul McKee, Wayne Bergeron, Terell Stafford, The New York Voices, Steve Turre, and Wycliffe Gordon.

3:10 PM - ROLLING HILLS CHURCH MULTI. RM. SACRAMENTO STATE JAZZ CHOIR Gaw Vang Williams - Director The Sacramento State vocal jazz ensembles are under the direction of Gaw Vang Williams. The program consists of two advance ensembles Vox Now and C-Sus Voices and also has a beginning ensemble call Vocal Jazz and Acapella lab. This beginning ensemble introduces new students to vocal jazz concepts and repertoire. The sounds of Sac State Vocal Jazz ensembles are influenced by the great vocal jazz groups of the past and present: The Hi-Lo's, Singers Unlimited, Take 6, New York Voices, The Real Group, Manhattan Transfer and others. Additionally, the ensemble strives to explore new, innovative approaches to contemporary vocal jazz and features student compositions and arrangements. The advance ensembles tours to different colleges, high schools, and jazz festivals throughout the year. The program also holds a benefit concert every fall benefiting local nonprofit organizations and performs a final concert and records every semester. The ensembles have appeared on TV and radio stations and was featured in a TEDx video. The vocal jazz program placed first at the 2016 and 2017 Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival and was invited to perform at the world-renowned Monterey Jazz Festival. In addition, the ensemble was invited to perform at the JEN (Jazz

16 Education Network) National Conference, ACDA National Conference, CCDA Conference, and CASMEC conference. The Sacramento State School of Music vocal jazz program has been awarded over 20 Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards.

Victor Wooten is a five-time Grammy winning, world-class, groundbreaking, educationally-minded bass player. Among other things, he is a loving husband and father of four, a skilled naturalist and teacher, a published author, a magician and acrobat, and has won every major award given to a bass guitarist including being voted of the Year in Bass Player Magazine's readers poll three times (the only person to win it more than once.) Steve Bailey, an accomplished electric and double bassist, is Chair of the Berklee College of Music Bass Department and co-founded the group, Bass Extremes, with Victor Wooten. Steve has played with a huge range of artists, including Victor Wooten in Bass Extremes, Bryan Duncan, Paquito D'Rivera, , James Moody, Dave Liebman, , , , , Chris Duarte, Jethro Tull, Lynyrd Skynyrd, , Ray Price, Billy Joe Shaver, Scott Henderson, Larry Carlton, Emily Remler, Brandon Fields, Carol Kaye, Kitaro, Max Highstein, T Lavitz, Tab Benoit, Johnny Witherspoon, Toni Price, Mel Tormé, Ernestine Anderson, Mark Murphy, , Billy Sheehan and others. -Steve Bailey, Wikipedia.org

Gregg Bissonette is a full-time recording and touring drummer who also features in instructional videos and drum clinics. Bissonette got his big break joining former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth. The band included guitarist Steve Vai and future Mr. Big bassist Billy Sheehan. During 1985-1992 Gregg appeared on all three US Billboard 200 hit albums Eat 'Em and Smile (no.4) Skyscraper (no.6) and A Little Ain't Enough (no.18) and the subsequent world tours.
