SWATCH-FIVB U-19 World Championship Notes Fédération Internationale de [email protected] Telephone +41-21 345 35 35 Swatch FIVB World Championship U-19 Press Director: Michelle Kromer, [email protected] FIVB Technical Supervisor: Lori Okimura, [email protected] · Starting September 5, there will be five days of competition for the fifth annual SWATCH-FIVB U-19 World Championships for both men and women at Horseshoe Bay, which is actually shaped like a horseshoe and located on the southwest tip of Bermuda.

· Known as the Island of Bermuda, Bermuda is the second most remote island in the world - the nearest point of land being to the west, at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, 650 miles (1,046 km) away. New York City is 750 miles (1,215 km) to the northwest and London is 3,460 miles (5,568 km) to the northeast. A British territory, Bermuda is a series of over 200 small islands connected by bridges, and totaling 22-square miles of land mass in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Many people make the mistake of thinking Bermuda’s somewhere in the Caribbean. It’s not. Bermuda is actually 950 miles (1529 km) to the north of Nassau, Bahamas. The 2006 SWATCH-FIVB U-19 World Championships will be organised by the Bermuda Volleyball Association (BVA) with assistance from The Bermuda Department of Tourism.

· The 2006 SWATCH-FIVB U-19 World Championships will be the first “major” competition that the BVA has held and the first time a national Beach Volleyball team from Bermuda has participated in a FIVB competition. · More than 50 referees, line judges and scorekeepers from Canada and the United States will be involved with the 2006 SWATCH-FIVB U-19 World Championships. · Bermuda native Richard McCoy is the President of Mikasa, a FIVB sponsor. “Bermuda will be an excellent host for the 2006 SWATCH-FIVB U-19 World Championships. This relatively small territory has a big history of hosting world class events in many sports, including yacht racing and cricket. It is the perfect setting to showcase the world class Beach Volleyball of the FIVB."

· A total of 22 countries have entered men’s and women’s teams into the 2006 SWATCH-FIVB U-19 World Championships, including Andorra, Australia, Austria, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan, the , New Zealand, Poland, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, the United States and Venezuela.

· Starting with the 2005 SWATCH-FIVB U-19 World Championships, a decision was made to modify the age groups in order to be in line with the continental Confederations. Hence, the event began being referred to U- 19 rather than U-18, as was the case in the previous three events.

· In addition to the gold medal, the winning teams will earn a ticket to participate in a SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event as the incentive further enhances the appeal of the U-19 World Championships, a training ground for the world's champions of tomorrow.

· The 2006 SWATCH-FIVB U-19 World Championships, for players under the age of 19, is being held outside of Europe for the second time after being the past two years in Italy and France, respectively. The 2005 SWATCH- FIVB U-19 World Championships were held in Saint Quay Portrieux, France.

· Slovenia’s Nejc Zemljak and Tine Urnaut claimed the men’s 2005 SWATCH-FIVB U-19 World Championships defeating Joseph Dykstra and Mark Van Zwieten of the United States 21-13, 21-23 and 15- 12 in 49 minutes as both countries earned their first U-19 medals in the four years of competition. Poland’s Grzegorz Fijalek and Michal Matyja eliminated 2004 U-18 champions Arunas Kirsnys and Arvydas Miseikis of Lithuania before being defeated by the Americans in the semi-finals.

· The “third-time was the charm” for Brazil’s Barbra Figueiredo as she captured the women’s 2005 SWATCH- FIVB U-19 World Championships with Carolinja Aragao by defeating defending champions Katarzyna Urban and Joanna Wiatr of Poland 21-14, 15-21 and 15-10 in the 52-minute for the title match. Figueiredo dropped last year’s title match to the Poles 17-21, 21-17 and 15-13 in Termoli, Italy when she was play with Carolina Salgado. Figueiredo and Salgado also placed second in the 2003 Thailand U-19 finale after losing to Jana Kohler and Laura Ludwig of Germany (21-11, 30-32 and 15-7).

· Two players that competed in the 2005 SWATCH-FIVB U-19 World Championships “final four” have entered the 2006 event in Bermuda. Brazilian Carolinja Aragao, who competed in the FIVB U-21 championships in August at Myslowice, Poland, returns with new partner U-19 partner Keila Germoglio. Germany’s Jonathan Erdmann, who placed fourth in the 2005 U-19s with Stefan Windscheif, has entered this year with Marvin Klass.

· Netherland’s Marleen Van Iersel, who placed fourth in the 2004 U-18s in Italy with Margo Wiltens, placed fifth last season with Maloes Wesselink in the 2005 U-19s after losing in the quarter-finals (21-15, 18-21 and 15-12) to Figueiredo and Aragao. Van Iersel will play this year with Danielle Remmers.
