Shrine Herald NATIONAL SHRINE OF THE LITTLE FLOWER BASILICA ROMAN December 16, 2018 Third Sunday of Advent We Will Be a Band of Joyful Missionary Disciples ... Notes From Fr. John Kopson Christmas and Radical Hospitality!

Have you ever been to an establishment or to a social event and the hospitality was less than ideal? An inhospitable encounter can easily lead to a negative overall experience. Jesus experienced loving hospitality (i.e. Martha and Mary’s great hospitality as they welcomed the Lord into their home) and inhospitable individuals (i.e. some of the people from Nazareth who rejected and took offense at Him) during His earthly ministry. To be inhospitable is to be harsh, difficult, unwelcoming, and/or unfriendly. When it comes to hospitality, we can fall into one of two camps. We can either welcome Jesus in our neighbor after the example of the angels, shepherds, and later the three kings who all lovingly embraced our Lord at Christmas Time. Or we can follow the example of the inn keepers who rejected Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Our upcoming Christmas Masses are an awesome opportunity for us to extend loving hospitality to all who will be with us to celebrate Jesus’ birth! The Archdiocese of has some great ideas and insights as to how we can show “radical hospitality” to all our brothers and sisters who will be worshipping the Lord Jesus with us this Christmas. Here are some ideas and insights: • Pray in advance during Advent for everyone who will be joining us for Christmas Mass. Pray in advance for whoever may be sitting in your normal pew on Christmas. • Consider leaving the closer parking spaces for others. • Greet others (especially unfamiliar faces) as they arrive for Mass.

Last class December 16 The last Preschool Religious Formation class before Christmas break is December 16. Preschool classes resume Sunday, January 6. Attention Parents of Preschoolers! Does your little one have a hard time holding still during Mass? Why not register him or her for Preschool Religious Formation? Our specially designed sessions take place during most Sundays of the school year during the 9:00 am Mass. Children who are potty-trained and will be at least 3 by December 1 but have not started kindergarten yet are eligible. The children learn the patterns of the Mass as we start with an opening song, sing Alleluia, hear that Sunday’s gospel and then reinforce what we heard through an activity or craft. We share a simple snack before finishing with a closing song. The tuition is only $35 per year! Contact Renee Cramer at [email protected] or 248.541.5133 for questions or to get a registration packet. Huge congratulations to Maureen Shannon who won the quilt and pillow case in the raffle supporting the High School Gardens! Thank you to everyone who bought tickets, it was greatly appreciated and allowed us to add Christmas lights around the statue of Mary and on the cross in front of the high school. It is quite pretty once the sun goes down. Feel free to stop by, sit awhile on the new benches and say a prayer. If you haven't been to the Shrine High School in some time, please stop by in the spring and summer when all our hard work is in full bloom. It is nice to walk along the front of the school, with the sun shining and seeing the beauty in the gardens. We continue to work hard to make the high school grounds inviting and pleasing to the eye! If you have a green thumb, and even if you don't, feel free to come up and garden anytime. We appreciate help in any form or fashion. Thank you to everyone who supports our efforts.
