Notes of Interest:

 Round seven of the 2018 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship takes the No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R duo of Jordan Taylor and Renger van der Zande north of the border to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario for Sunday’s Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix.  It will be the second two-hour, 40-minute race together for Taylor, who’s in his sixth year as full-time co-driver with the team, and van der Zande, who joined the team this past offseason when Ricky Taylor left after a four-year run co-driving with his younger brother to join the new, two-car Team Penske Prototype-class effort.  Sunday’s two-hour, 40-minute race on the 2.459-mile, 10-turn road circuit just more than an hour’s drive north and east of Toronto takes the team to one of its most successful tracks in recent years, where the Taylor brothers scored a resounding victory in 2015 sandwiched by a pair of third- place finishes in 2014 and 2016, and another dominating run in 2017 that ended with a late-race incident after leading a race-high 73 laps.  A year ago this weekend, Ricky Taylor qualified the No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R on the pole, and he and his younger brother maintained control of the race until Jordan Taylor made contact with a GTLM-class competitor while leading by more than 20 seconds with just 20 minutes to go in the race. Taylor stayed in the lead after the incident, but pit lane was never opened during the subsequent caution period, and he was forced to wait until the race went back to green before he could enter pit lane and allow the team to repair damage from the accident. He crossed the finish line seventh, two laps down, after the checkered flag flew.  Two year ago this weekend, Ricky Taylor qualified on the front row, grabbed the lead from polesitting Mazda driver Tristen Nunez and held the point for the opening 11 laps. In the latter stages of the race, Jordan Taylor found himself battling for the lead with the Action Express Racing entries. A late-race gamble to change just rear tires temporarily allowed the younger Taylor to regain the lead, but he ultimately had to hold on for a third-place finish – the team’s third consecutive podium in three visits to the track.  Three years ago, Ricky Taylor qualified on the pole and led the opening 28 laps of the race, but it wasn’t until nine minutes remained in the two-hour, 40-minute race before Jordan Taylor got the lead back for good with a pass of in the No. 31 Action Express Racing entry. The two waged an exciting battle to the checkered flag, with Taylor crossing the finish line .477 of a second ahead of Cameron.  In their first appearance at the track four years ago, the Taylor brothers qualified sixth and overcame an early off-course excursion to bring home a gutsy third-place finish, widening their lead atop the point standings with their fifth podium in the first seven events of 2014.  Last weekend, at the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International, van der Zande and Jordan Taylor ran a trouble-free race from their qualifying position of eighth, led four laps and scored the team’s fourth fifth-place finish in a row. Taylor restarted in first place with 35 minutes remaining after the day’s final round of pit stops under caution, but Juan Montoya of Team Penske and Stephen Simpson of the eventual race-winning JDC Motorports team had little trouble getting by him within three turns after the race went back to green.  The fifth-place finish kept Taylor and van der Zande third in the championship, 13 points behind the leading No. 5 Action Express Racing Cadillace DPi-V.R duo of Joao Barbosa and , and 12 points behind second-place Eric Curran and Felipe Nasr of the No. 31 Action Express Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R entry, who finished sixth and seventh, respectively, Sunday at Watkins Glen.

 Van der Zande is a 32-year-old from Amsterdam and co-drove with Belgian sportscar ace Marc Goossens last season in the No. 90 Prototype-class entry, scoring a signature win thanks to his dramatic pass for the lead during the closing moments of September’s penultimate round at Laguna Seca, as well as a solid podium finish at the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Van der Zande had been a recent fixture on the IMSA WeatherTech circuit, scoring nine race wins, 18 podium finishes and the 2016 championship for the LMPC-class Starworks Motorsport team during a three-year run that begin in 2014. Prior to his arrival on the North American scene in 2013, he had driven in virtually every major racing series worldwide, including Formula Renault, A1GP, GP2, German Touring Car, World Endurance Championship, SuperCup, and the Blancpain Endurance Series. His professional career began to take shape when he won the 2005 Formula Renault 2.0 championship in his native country.  Three weekends ago, van der Zande competed in the for the first time in his career, driving for the No. 10 Dragonspeed BR Engineering BR1 Gibson entry alongside American Henrik Hedman and Brit Ben Hanley. The team qualified sixth but placed 48th overall after an accident with seven hours remaining ended its race prematurely.  This weekend marks van der Zande’s third career appearance at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. After an early exit due to engine issues with the LMPC-class Starworks Motorsport in 2015, he and co-driver came back with a runner-up finish in class for the Starworks team in 2016. Last year, van der Zande and Marc Goosens retired just 35 laps into the race in the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona entry.  At this year’s season-opening Rolex 24, van der Zande qualified the No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R on the pole in his maiden qualifying voyage with his new team. He led the opening 18 laps of the race and he and Taylor and Ryan Hunter-Reay stayed comfortably with the leaders over the first third of the race. But various issues ultimately cost several laps while making repairs and unscheduled pit stops and the team retired during the 17th hour and left Daytona credited with 15th place.  Taylor, van der Zande and Hunter-Reay rebounded from their Daytona disappointment with a solid runner-up finish at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring in March.  Taylor and van der Zande scored a second-consecutive podium finish when they came home third on the (Calif.) street circuit in April.
