Biographical/Historical Note

Joseph Frederick Waring II (September 12, 1902-April 8, 1972), was a local Savannah, Georgia, historian and preservationist. Waring, the son of Pinckney Alston and Lillie Ellis Waring, was born in Savannah where he grew up and received his early education. He was a graduate of Governor Dummer Academy in Newburyport, Massachusetts, the oldest private school in the United States, and of Yale University. He also attended Cambridge University in England and received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin. In 1953, Waring married Julianna Fitch of Hudson, Ohio. Waring taught English for 32 years at the Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio, until his retirement in 1967. During World War II, he served in the American Field Service as an ambulance driver and served with the British Eighth Army in North Africa. Following the war he taught for a year at the American Academy in Beirut, Lebanon. Following his retirement as a teacher in Ohio, Waring returned to Savannah, with his wife, where he became active in academic and community affairs. He taught for short periods at Savannah State College and Savannah County Day School. At various times he served as the curator and president of the Georgia Historical Society, vice-president of the Poetry Society of Georgia, trustee of the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences, president of the Save-the-Bay Committee, a founder of the Victorian Society of Savannah, and chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Wormsloe Foundation. Waring arranged the records of the Georgia Medical Society and arranged for their transfer to the Georgia Historical Society. At the time of his death he was compiling a history of Christ Church, Savannah, with the rector emeritus, the Rev. F. Bland Tucker.

Waring was editor of Uncle Remus, by Joel Chandler Harris, published in England while he was a student at Cambridge, author of James W. Ellsworth, and the Refounding of Western Reserve Academy, published in 1961, and author of Cerveau's Savannah, published in 1973 by the Georgia Historical Society.

Some of Waring's research included in this collection is centered on the Jeff Davis Cavalry Legion. The Jeff Davis Cavalry Legion was organized in January 1862, formed with the 2nd Mississippi Cavalry Battalion as its nucleus. The unit contained two Alabama, one Georgia, and three Mississippi companies. The Georgia company, the Georgia Hussars, was organized in 1736 in Savannah, Georgia. In 1861, the Hussars made their services available to the Confederate Government, "free of all cost to the government as far as Richmond, Virginia." The Georgia Hussars left for Richmond in September 1861. Once there, the Hussars were transferred to the Jeff Davis Legion, becoming Company F of the unit. The Jeff Davis Legion served under Generals Hampton, Butler, and P.M.B. Young. They participated in the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from Williarnsburg to Cold Harbor, and were active at Brandy Station, Gettysburg, and in the Bristoe Campaign. In 1865, the unit was assigned to General Logan's Brigade and surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. The unit's field officers were Colonel William T. Martin, Lieutenant Colonels William G. Conner and J. Frederick Waring I (of the Georgia Hussars), and Majors Ivey F. Lewis and W.M. Stone.

The Joseph Frederick Waring II papers (1821-1972) contain advertisements, broadsides, business records, correspondence, diaries, drawings, estate records, clippings, lectures, maps, minutes, muster rolls, notes, pamphlets, photographs, poems, property records, reports. and scrapbooks. The collection includes papers and genealogies on the Waring family, research materials on the Jeff Davis Legion, reasearch materials on Waring's publication Cerveau's Savannah, and papers and talks given by Waring. SERIES 1:: WARING FAMILY PAPERS AND GENEALOGIES

This series includes original letters and records collected by J.F. Waring II, supplemented by his handwritten notes, regarding various members of the family beginning with Dr. William R. Waring (1787-1842), who came to Savannah from Charleston in 1813. The collection follows the Waring family through the mid-20th century and documents the related family lines, including Trist, Alston, Ellis, and Gay. The family correspondence, arranged in chronological order (1821-1971), pertains to family matters, social life, medicine (notably the yellow fever epidemics of 1820, 1854, and 1876), and business matters. Following the correspondence, the papers of various family members are arranged alphabetically. The papers of James Johnston Waring I (1829-1888), Joseph Frederick Waring I (1832-1876), Minna Alston Waring (1868-1959), and Dr. Thomas Pinckney Waring (1867-1943) include original journals, property records, articles, and business records.

Those of June-August 1873 are from Europe when he was investigating agricultural subjects; later ones were written from Savannah. The 1872 item is a statement of costs for erecting a plantation house on Sedgebank. Other correspondents include Susan M. Johnston Kollock, W. P. Johnston (copy), Mary B. Alston Waring.

10 Correspondence, 1875 April-1879, 27.0 items. Most of these letters were written by J. J. Waring I, Mary B. Alston Waring, Annie Johnston Waring, J. J. Waring II, Pinckney Alston Waring and Lou Alston to and from each other about personal and family affairs. Other letters to J. J. Waring I are from Jane W. Bryan, and William E. Long. The letters of 1876 refer to the yellow fever epidemic of that year.

56 Mary M. Marshall estate, 1867-1880, 29.0 items. James Johnston Waring was trustee of the estate of Mary Magdalene Leaver Marshall, a wealthy widow and owner of considerable real estate in and around Savannah. She had one adopted daughter, Margaret Marshall, who married A. A. E. W. Barclay, and by him had a daughter, Mary Marshall Barclay (Marie). The Barclays were divorced in 1862. Margaret Marshall Barclay died in 1866, and Mary Marshall, her mother, died in 1877, leaving her estate in trust for her granddaughter, Mary Marshall Barclay, who married C.C. Taliaferro of Virginia by whom she had three children. The Taliaferro children inheirited the Marshall property. The papers consist of correspondence, receipts, estate account, 1874-1880, clippings and notes on the family by Joseph Frederick Waring II. Of interest is a letter to Mrs. Mary M. Marshall, June 27, 1867, containing resolutions naming a fire company "The Marshall Hose Company of Savannah."

SERIES 2:: THE JEFF DAVIS LEGION

This series includes Joseph Frederick Waring II's unpublished six part manuscript tracing the history of the Jeff Davis Legion from 1861-1865. The Jeff Davis Legion, a cavalry unit, comprised of three companies from Mississippi, two from Alabama, and one from Georgia (The Georgia Hussars), gained considerable fame during the Civil War. Joseph Frederick Waring I, was a colonel in the unit. The manuscript is followed by five boxes of Waring's notes organized by individuals, components, and military actions. The material regarding individual soldiers is arranged alphabetically and includes Waring's handwritten copies of letters, biographical sketches, reminiscences, and some photos. Following are notes regarding the components of the Jeff Davis Legion arranged by companies from Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia and includes muster rolls (on microfilm) and histories of each company. Waring's research on the military actions (arranged chronologically) reflect the Jeff Davis Legion's involvement in the Civil War battles, including Seven Days (1862), Brandy Station (1863), Gettysburg (1863), Bentanville (1865), and the unit's surrender in April 1865. Maps and brochures of the battlefields and sketches of the confederate flags are included at the end of the series.

SERIES 3:: CERVEAU'S SAVANNAH AND SAVANNAH NOTES

Cerveau's Savannah by J.F. Waring II, published in 1973 by the Georgia Historical Society, was based on the panorama of Savannah painted by Firmin Cerveau in 1837. This series includes research for the book, as well as notes and materials relating to Savannah and its people collected and copied by J.F. Waring II (predominantly Waring's handwritten notes). Materials that are identifiable as pertaining to the book are in folders marked "Cerveau."
