  • A's News Clips, Wednesday, February 22, 2011 Oakland A's Know This Much About David Dejesus
A’s News Clips, Wednesday, February 22, 2011 Oakland A's know this much about David DeJesus: He can hit By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune PHOENIX -- For a guy who appears to have a spot locked down in the A's lineup, David DeJesus' exact role is hard to define. Is he a rally-starter who best fits near the top of the lineup, or a run producer who will earn his paycheck clearing the bases? All that's known is DeJesus, obtained via trade from Kansas City in November, is targeted for right field. If the A's wind up showing improvement offensively this season, figure DeJesus will be central to the effort in one way or another. "He's an all-around hitter who uses the whole field," A's manager Bob Geren said. "There are guys that hit more home runs, but when you put the numbers together, he's one of the best hitters in baseball." A .289 career hitter over seven-plus major league seasons, DeJesus, 31, has collected as many as 73 RBIs in a year (2008) and scored as many as 101 runs (2007). One notable stat for fans tired of watching A's hitters make the slow walk back to the dugout: DeJesus led the majors last season with a .287 average in two-strike counts. There's a strong chance he'll wind up as the No. 3 hitter by default -- sandwiched between table-setters Coco Crisp and Daric Barton and sluggers Josh Willingham and Hideki Matsui. Therein lies the problem that exists for the A's in the eyes of some.

  • A's News Clips, Wednesday, December 1, 2010 Power-Hungry
A’s News Clips, Wednesday, December 1, 2010 Power-hungry Oakland A's ready to wine, dine former Houston Astros slugger Lance Berkman By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune A's officials were scheduled to have dinner Tuesday night in Houston with free agent Lance Berkman, two sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to Bay Area News Group. Berkman, a switch-hitter who's slugged 327 homers over 12 seasons, is known to have been on the team's radar. Presumably, the A's view him as their designated hitter if they sign him. Berkman hit just .248 with 14 homers and 58 RBIs last season, which he began with the Houston Astros before being traded to the New York Yankees. But Berkman, who turns 35 in February, told Fox Sports last week that he's fully recovered from arthroscopic knee surgery that bothered him much of last season. He hit 25 homers as recently as 2009 for Houston. Adding power is the A's most pressing need. They would have a hole at DH if they decide not to tender a contract to Jack Cust, which is a strong possibility. The A's must decide by 9 p.m. Thursday (PT) whether to tender contracts to their 10 arbitration-eligible players, including Cust. Other logical non-tender candidates: outfielder Travis Buck, reliever Brad Ziegler and either of two third basemen -- Kevin Kouzmanoff or Edwin Encarnacion. It's believed the A's would consider signing Berkman to a one- or two-year deal, though the team doesn't comment on free- agent negotiations.

November 4, 2016 ESPNChicago.com From 1908 until now: Cubs' run of heartache finally ends By Bradford Doolittle We want to say this all began in 1945 because a colorful tavern owner tried to drag a smelly goat named Murphy with him to a World Series game. We then employ what Joe Maddon likes to call "outcome bias" as proof of this alleged curse, bringing up such hobgoblins as the black cat in 1969, Leon Durham's glove in 1984 and Steve Bartman's eager hands in 2003. In reality, this began long before any of that. It started with a poor soul named Fred Merkle, in the year 1908 -- the last time the Chicago Cubs won a World Series. On Wednesday night, the 2016 Cubs put an end date on that cursed year by winning the franchise's first World Series in 108 years, beating the Cleveland Indians in extra innings in Game 7, 8-7. The reasons the Cubs didn't win it all for so long aren't easy to distill in a work less than book length. There are a few wide-umbrella factors that one can easily point to.
