Proud to Support the Corner Brook Rotary Music Festival 2016

www.anthonyinsurance.com Message from the Mayor

On behalf of Council, staff and residents it is my pleasure to bring warm greetings to those celebrating the Corner Brook Rotary Music Festival. In 2016 the City of Corner Brook celebrates its 60th anniversary. During this period we are taking the opportunity to recognize our past and renew our commitment for the future.

For over fifty years the Corner Brook Rotary Music Festival has cultivated the growth and appreciation of the arts in our City by celebrating the joy, and love of music with our citizens. They provide participants the opportunity to perform in a welcoming atmosphere, to strive for excellence, and to enhance their musical studies. The City of Corner Brook is proud to support this music festival which has helped inspire so many of our youth to foster a love for the performing arts.

Through the Rotary members the festival has always been well organized, with supportive adjudicators and fantastic volunteers. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the individuals who commit their time and energy to make this festival such a success. The history of service and contribution by the Corner Brook Rotary Club is certainly commendable and we thank you for your continued dedication.

Additionally, thank you to the sponsors for providing financial assistance, and believing in the arts.

Best wishes to all participants and supporters.

Charles Pender, Mayor City of Corner Brook

Elaine Huxter The Rotary Club of Corner Brook

Welcome to the 2016 Corner Brook Rotary Music Festival. Our board, staff and volunteers have worked very hard to make this the best festival yet. This is a very busy time for our performers, teachers and parents. I applaud you all and know that there has been much work, time and effort put into the preparation for your classes.

To our participants, the adjudicators will provide you with comments and new ideas on your performances. Whether you end up at the top of your class or with a certificate of participation, take all that you can from this experience. Not everyone has the guts to get up on that stage, you are a winner just by showing up.

To our amazing teachers, thank you for all that you do to build self esteem and talent in our children.

To the parents, hang in there this week. It is extremely difficult to be everywhere, make sure the right music is brought and that outfits and costumes are perfect. You are providing an incredible experience for your children that will last a lifetime.

Thank you to our wonderful adjudicators who listen so carefully and provide such caring feedback to our performers.

A huge thank you to the board of the festival, to our dedicated volunteers, to our staff and to all of our venues.

I wish the best of luck to all participants, without you there would be no festival. Break legs!

Bernd Staeben President, Rotary Music Festival Association

It is my pleasure to welcome you on behalf of the Board of Directors to the annual Corner Brook Rotary Music Festival.

This is our 54th festival and the one constant theme over that period of time is the reliance on, as well as the appreciation of participating students, all the music teachers, the wonderful adjudicators, parents, Rotarians, and especially our many volunteers. All of you are the backbone of the Festival and we are very thankful to you. Let us not forget the financial contribution of the business community, which is essential to the health and welfare of this Festival. We thank you for your continued support.

We continue to strive for greater participation from all of the western areas of the province and welcome any entries from young people who would like to share the experience and enhance their music education. Rotary’s purpose of this annual Festival is in making the week a celebration of song and music.

Enjoy the Festival – may the 54th Festival be a positive experience that leaves you with many fond memories.

(2) An amateur is a person whose principal means of livelihood is not obtained from the performance of music in the particular category in which he or she is competing, even though from time to time he or she receives remuneration for musical services rendered, but not on a full- time basis.

3. In classes in which an age limit is prescribed, entrants must not be over the prescribed age on the first day of January of the year of the Festival. Date and year of birth must be entered in the space provided on the entry form, except for group entries, in which case the Association requires the assurance of the director that 95% of the members of the group are within the prescribed age limit.

4. In these rules “section” means that division of the syllabus which provides for solo entries in each of vocal, organ, and piano classes and the subdivisions of the brass, woodwind, string and percussion divisions of the syllabus which provide for solo entries in each of these subdivisions.

(2) In classes in the Festival which are marked “Non-competitive” public adjudications are given but marks are not awarded.

6. 7. (1) An entrant may not enter more than six solo classes in one section, or more than a total of ten solo classes in all sections, excluding sight- reading, sight-singing, quick study and participation in bands, orchestras and choirs. Art song and lieder classes are included in the number of solo classes allowed.

(2) In addition to entrance in the classes described in paragraph (1), an entrant may enter not more than a total of two other classes for duets, trios, quartets, quintets, octets, triple trios or ensembles. In order to encourage participation, exceptions have been made to this rule for the 2016 Festival. This exception applies only to the 2016 Festival and the rule will be reviewed for future Festivals. (d) where the performer wishes the adjudicator to have a copy of music in advance, it is the responsibility of that performer to deliver the music to the Executive Secretary one month before the commencement of the Festival.

20. An entrant who is performing his or her own selection in a class for vocal solos for 16 years of age or older, lieder, art songs, vocal groups or choirs, concert groups, concerti, sonatas, major works, orchestras, bands and ensembles in any section of the syllabus shall number the first bar of each line in the copy of the music which is to be given to the adjudicator.

21. (1)The programme for a concert group shall be chosen from standard concert literature. However, participants in the junior concert group and younger are permitted to use folksongs arranged by a recognized composer.

(2) Entrants in concert groups will be judged on the discrimination they show in the selection and arrangement of their programme, having regard to contrast of selections, appropriateness, keys, style, periods, etc., as well as to technique, interpretation, and stage presence. Those considerations are an integral part of the presentation. An entrant shall not include in a concert group any selection which he or she has already performed in a Corner Brook Rotary Music Festival.

Memory work is optional in all other concert groups. Note: Memory work for all provincial classes is mandatory.

22. An entrant in vocal classes may enter only one solo voice category.

23. Choral test pieces may be transposed.

24. In senior vocal classes (19 years & over) set pieces shall be sung in the original language and key. In all other vocal classes, language is optional unless otherwise specified and transposition is allowed.

25. In art song and lieder classes, marks will be given on the individual performances of the singer and accompanist. Art songs and lieder are to be sung in the original language. The title and composer of the music selected must be specified on the entry form, and a copy thereof delivered to the Executive Secretary in accordance with Rule 20. Professional musicians may not participate in these classes. Art songs of the following composers may be used: Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Franz, Wolf, Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler, Faure, Debussy, etc. The singer will be governed by rules pertaining to the vocal section and the accompanist by rules pertaining to the piano section.

26. For the purposes of the Corner Brook Rotary Music Festival, a folk song is one whose origins are unknown or uncertain and which was originally transmitted orally from generation to generation. A selection does not satisfy those criteria if its authorship is known. Folk songs are not to be confused with ballads or popular songs.

27. In set pieces, repeats shall be played at the discretion of the performer and as stated in the Syllabus. NOTE: Da Capo repeats must always be observed.

28. For string classes for juniors, entrants may have their instruments tuned by a teacher or other person.

32. Entry forms which do not give the requested information or which are improperly completed are subject to rejection.

33. Entry fees cannot be refunded, except where an entry is rejected.

34. (1) The Festival Association will provide each entrant with an entry form specifying the place and time of performance of each class in which the entrant is to perform.

(2) An entry form entitles the entrant named in it to attend without charge the performance of each class specified in the form.

35. The Association reserves the right to sub-divide any class under circumstances where the number or character of the entries would justify the sub-division.

36. (1) Entrants shall perform in the order indicated in the programme unless otherwise approved by the Executive Secretary. Entrants who do not comply with this rule will be disqualified. The Association reserves the right to change the order where circumstances warrant. In the event of illness, accident or other emergency, a substitute may perform in duets, duos, trios, quartets, quintets, octets or group classes, provided the Executive Secretary is notified and given the reason for the substitution prior to the time set for performance, and provided the substitute is eligible under the rules governing that class.

(2) The order of performance will not be changed to accommodate accompanists unless special circumstances warrant and permission is obtained from the Executive Secretary.

37. An entrant who performs other than a set piece, or a piece substituted therefore in accordance with these rules or who performs as his or her own selection a selection other than as given to the Executive Secretary, may be adjudicated but shall not be given a mark for that performance and the performance shall not be considered in the making of an award.

38. It is recommended and desirable that performances in all solo classes, in addition to those referred in Rule 21(5), be from memory. (Note: Entrants who may be recommended to proceed to the Provincial Festival should note that memorization is required for all classes in the Provincial Festival.) 39. An adjudicator may stop a performance at any time.

40. At the discretion of the adjudicator, two or more entrants in a class may be selected to compete in a final test.

41. The marks awarded by an adjudicator are final.

42. Certificates will be awarded to the three entrants gaining the highest marks in each competitive class, but a certificate will not be awarded unless the following percentages of the possible marks have been obtained:

(a) 75% in choral, orchestra and band classes;

(b) 80% in all other classes.

43. (1) An entrant may be invited to perform at a Festival concert and should be prepared to appear and perform.

(2) An entrant who performs at a Festival concert shall not receive remuneration for the performance or be paid for incidental expenses.

(3) An entrant who is invited to perform at a Festival concert shall perform the selection chosen by the adjudicator and if the entrant performs a selection other than that so chosen he or she shall forfeit any award for which he or she has been recommended.

44. With the exception of classes in sight-reading or sight-singing, the Festival is open to the public on payment of the price of admission fixed for each session, subject to space being available after entrants have been accommodated.

45. Complaints and protests shall be made to the Executive Secretary in writing and not to the adjudicator. A complaint or protest shall be accompanied by a fee equivalent to the entry fee of the class protested. The protest fee will be refunded if the complaint or protest is sustained by the Festival Association. Congratulations and Best Wishes

Good luck to all participants! Choral Award

The award is given on the recommendation of the adjudicators for the best overall performance by a choir of 13 or more singers, aged 19 years and under. Five percent (5%) of the choir membership may exceed the specified age limit. The winner will also receive a cash prize of $300.00 donated by Aliant.

To be eligible for the award a choir shall have received an average of at least 85 marks in each class in which it sang, provided it did not receive less than 80 marks in any one selection.

The adjudicators shall, inter alia, consider the degree of difficulty of music performed and the versatility and standard of musicianship displayed by a choir in the classes in which it performed, even though it may not have received the highest mark in any class. Though it is envisaged that choirs eligible for the award will be entered in more than one class in the Festival, the adjudicators are not precluded from considering and recommending that the award be made to a choir entered in only one class, provided that in that class the choir sang not less than two contrasting selections.
