FINAL DETAILS for Day 1 of the BOK Blast weekend

South West Sprint Championships Saturday 7 September 2013 Stoke Park and University of the West of England UPDATED 29 August with further information on Entries deadlines, Start Times - all updates in red (see separate Final Details for Day 2 of the BOK Blast )

Event Centre: Centre for Sport, Frenchay Campus, University of the West of England (UWE), BS34 8QZ (Grid Reference ST 621785).

Car park: University car park 23, next to UWE Exhibition and Conference Centre. Use UWE North Gate entrance only BS34 8QZ, Grid Reference ST 619786. (You cannot access this car park via UWE East Gate entrance). From car park 23 to Event Centre follow tapes and signs from east side of the car park (5 minutes’ walk). Road crossing care. Travel by Car: From M4 . Exit M4 at Junction 19 onto M32. Exit M32 at Junction 1 and go west along Bristol ring road A 4174, following signs for Filton and Bristol Parkway Railway station. Go past Holiday Inn entrance on left, drive straight on at first traffic lights, then go left at second traffic lights signed UWE Exhibition and Conference Centre and UWE North Gate entrance (1 mile from M32). Orienteering event signs start here. Follow O signs to car park 23. If by mistake you turn left at the first traffic lights you will reach a large roundabout and UWE East Gate entrance. Do not enter the East entrance but go right around the roundabout, return to the ring road, turning left at the traffic lights, then left again at the second traffic lights (UWE North Gate entrance). From the south. From join M32, exit at Junction1 and follow directions above. From the ring road A4173 east bound. Stay on ring road and follow signs and right filter for UWE North Gate entrance after the big roundabout at ST 613788. From the ring road A4174 west bound. Stay on the ring road and follow signs for Filton and Bristol Parkway Railway station after the junction with M32. Follow directions as M4 route above. Departure: Exit left only. Eastbound drivers must leave UWE by turning LEFT and proceed to first major roundabout , and go all way around to head East on Ring Road, A4174. Travel by Train: Use stations Bristol Parkway or Filton Abbey Wood; allow 25 minutes’ walk from either station to UWE North Gate entrance. From Parkway take a taxi or bus 18, 312, 318, 319, 502, 581 or 625. The stop is Filton Lane opposite the UWE North Gate Entrance. Enter the campus via this North Gate entrance then follow O signs to the Event Centre. Travel by Bus: From the city centre use Wessex Red buses 11, 12, 15, 19 or from Bristol Temple Meads railway station use First bus 70. These will take you into the UWE Frenchay campus bus station. From here walk east to UWE East Gate entrance (100m) and follow tapes and signs to the Event Centre (Centre for Sport). You will be following part of the route to the Start in reverse. Do not take short cuts as you will enter the competition area. Travel by bike: Use UWE North gate entrance only. See Car Park information above. Bike route on the south side of the ring road A4174 leads to UWE North Gate entrance. Bike shelters on the south side of UWE car park 23 and in front of the Event Centre. Do not enter the UWE campus via the East Gate entrance or cycle through the campus as you will be in the competition area.

Facilities: Registration/Enquiries, Download, First Aid are all within the Event Centre (sports hall in the UWE Centre for Sport). Toilets and changing rooms/showers all via sports hall. Lockers in the changing rooms are operated via a £1 coin. Clothing/bag dump area in the sports hall (not supervised). Car key box at Enquiries. Please use sports hall entrance beyond the the Main Entrance of the Centre for Sport to access the Event Centre. NO O SHOES OR DRINK S IN SPORTS HALL please. A s hop selling sandwiches etc and hot/cold drinks is next door. A c overed outdoor eating area is in front of Event Centre.

Terrain: The area for the Morning Race (Prologue) is mainly a complex housing estate called Stoke Park. The Afternoon Race (Final) is all within the modern campus of the University of the West of England . There are areas of grass and parkland with small areas of woodland in both . The area is largely flat but contours may affect route choice on some courses in the Morning Race (Prologue.)

Blind corners should be approached carefully and pavements/steps may be slippery when wet. All courses have roads to cross and these may have traffic including cars, buses and bicycles. Please respect other road users , pedestrians and local residents and t heir properties , and be great ambassadors of orienteering.

The central building at UWE, shown on the map extract below, has through routes with automatic doors at the entrances. The through route is shown in light grey on the map to indicate it may be used and doors with be signed (Figure 1 Access allowed)

Map and control descriptions: Maps at 1:4000 using ISSOM specification for urban maps, printed on waterproof paper. UWE map revised summer 2013 and new map of Stoke Park surveyed by Adam Potter (BOK) with cartography by Dudley Budden (BOK) summer 2013. The special symbol of a black circle represents a frisbee goal (metal frames on a pole.)The symbols below represent features that you are forbidden to cross, even when it seems possible to do so:

Pictorial control descriptions are on the map. Loose control descriptions in start lanes; pictorial for courses 1 to 6 and written for course 7.

Controls: SI electronic punching will be used. Controls are a flag and SI box which will be fixed to the feature with wire or on a stake. It is your responsibility to check that the SI box beeps when you insert the dibber SI card hire – Juniors : Free, Seniors £1.50, lost card £25.

Event format: It is a 2 round competition for the SW Sprint Championships 2013. Non SW Championship competitors may enter both or one race. National Ranking points for all BOF members will, like the SW Championships, be calculated upon combined times of both Morning ( Prologue) and Afternoon (Final) races

Registration: For Entry on the Day for all ages (but not for the SW championships), subject to map availability at the Event centre. Those that have pre entered online need not go to Registration. No race bibs are being used. Registration from 0930 to 1100am for entry on the day, and then continuing as a source of information about the second afternoon race which starts from 1400

Starts/Finishes: Morning race (Prologue ): Starts from 10.15 to 1130am Start times for the Morning race (Prologue) for pre entered competitors will be shown on Fabian4 website Event Centre to Start is 20 minutes’ walk, follow tapes. Take great care crossing any roads and Juniors must be supervised. Separate starts for Seniors and Juniors after call up box – 4 minutes. Finish back to the Event Centre is 10 minutes walk, follow tapes. You must Download in the Event Centre IMMEDIATELY after your run, even if you do not complete your Course Courses close at 12.15 noon Senior courses will use the whole map (Stoke Park and UWE) whilst the Junior courses will be in the UWE campus only. Start Times for the Morning Race (Prologue) will be displayed from Monday 2 Sept, online at Fabian 4 http://www.fabian4.co.uk/start/list.aspx?EventID=859 for all entries upto 1159 on 31 August. Subsequent entries will be accepted online via Fabian4 at the EOD rate subject to map availability.

Afternoon race (Final): Starts will be from 2.00 to 3.00pm. Courses close at 3.30pm Start times will be displayed as soon as possible after the completion of the Morning race (Prologue) at the Event Centre. Finish is next to the Event Centre. All courses will be in the UWE campus only. You must Download in the Event Centre IMMEDIATELY after your run even if you do not complete your Course .

Prize giving: SW Sprint Championship certificates will be awarded to the winner of each senior age class and to the first 3 places for juniors. Presentations will be in the Event Centre as soon as possible after the Afternoon race (Final) - at about 4pm.

Shoes/clothing: Shorts permitted but metal studded shoes should not be used.

Dogs : Dog owners are requested not to take their dogs on Courses. Dogs are not permitted in the Event Centre or within the UWE campus

Safety: Competitors take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety. If you do not feel well you should not run. Parents are advised to remind Juniors to take care at all times both on and off their courses and supervise them as necessary. In case of an incident contact the Organiser at the Event Centre as soon as possible.

1. South West Orienteering Association AGM will take place at about 4.45pm till 6pm in the Viewing Gallery, Event Centre upstairs. All are very welcome to attend.

2. JK 2014 meetings will take place in the Viewing Gallery, Event Centre upstairs coordinated by Helen Errington, BOF.

3. Gromit Unleashed It’s the last weekend to visit the 80 huge colourful sculptures of Gromit on a trail across central Bristol. It’s become a very popular activity in Bristol over this summer. 4. Many other central Bristol attractions include the @Bristol hands on Science Centre, SS Great Britain, Museum of Bristol, Watershed media centre, arts centre are all within 5/10 minutes of the Day 2 Event Centre.
