Accommodation A wonderful Grade II* listed family home with a wealth of period features dating back to c.1750, making it one of Islington’s oldest houses. The property is discreetly located in a blind alley off Upper Street and benefits from a 55' private rear garden. A fine Georgian house built c.1750 offering flexible accommodation arranged over 4 floors with a 55' rear garden. The property occupies a relatively narrow frontage of one bay only, but this is deceptive as the main part of the building is tucked away behind the adjoining properties. The original internal fitting‐out and finishes have survived to an exceptional degree throughout all the rooms of the house. Wooden cornices remain in all but one of the principal rooms, and there is a particularly fine 'rococo' fireplace and picture surround of about 1760 in the first‐floor drawing room. There is a separate kitchen and dining room on the ground floor with access to the garden via a utility room. Of particular note is the drawing room on the first floor with high ceilings and sash bay window with views over the rear neighbouring gardens. Also on this floor there is a further reception room and study. The property has 4 double bedrooms including 3 on the second floor with family bathroom and a master bedroom on the top floor with built‐in wardrobes. To the rear of the house is a fantastic 55' garden including two outbuildings currently being used as a piano room and storage.

History Terrett's Place has a history stretching back nearly 300 years. The present house seems to have been built in the mid‐ 1720s, although there may be an earlier half timbered house incorporated into the fabric. The back of the house appears to have been remodelled in the 1760s. The character of the part closest to the street is plain vernacular of the period and includes plank and muntin panelling and a brick subfloor which incorporates an internal well or cistern and an early washing place in one of the closets.

The rear part is grander, with a bay overlooking the garden at first and second floor. Finished in weatherboarding with dentilled cornices at both levels. Internally this rear part of the house includes a grand living room overlooking the enclosed garden ﴾probably then a back yard﴿. In this living room is a remarkable carved pine fireplace incorporating a ho ho bird, with over angel mirror in the same style, carefully restored by the present owner.

The top floor was sensitively added as a well lit attic storey in the 1990s, probably reflecting the original design.

The dating is confirmed by a 1724 halfpenny found under the kitchen floor. Also found were a number of fragments of plaster busts and associated moulds, reflecting the house's use as a workshop in the early 19th century. The house has been identified as that of Tom Pinch in Dickens' Martin Chuzzlewit.

The garden was filled with workshops in the 19th century, now demolished. Another well was found there in the 1990's.

It appears in several publications including Andrew Byrne's London's Georgian Houses. The results of the present owner's research were published in ASCHB proceedings in 1990.
