According to the ICAO forecast, by 2040 the number of passengers is expected to grow to 10 billion.

December 7 was proclaimed the International Civil Aviation Day by the United Nations to increase awareness of the importance of international civil aviation to the social and economic development of countries. The day is dedicated to the promotion of a global rapid transit network for all people. For the 2015–2018 period the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) at the United Nations selected the theme Working Together to Ensure No Country is Left Behind.

Airports

According to Eurostat data, among airports in the EU-28 – similarly to previous years – in 2015, most passengers travelled via London Heathrow Airport (74.95 million, just over a million more than in 2014). With almost 1.44 million passengers, the largest Slovenian airport Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport was 155th behind the airport in Skopje, Macedonia, and in front of the airport in Aalborg, .

Air travel

According to the ICAO estimate, 3.5 billion airline passengers were carried globally in 2015 in international and domestic public air transport, the most ever and 6.8% more than in 2014. In addition, close to 51 million tons of goods were transported by air, 1.2% more than in 2014. International air transport alone recorded more than 1.4 billion passengers in 2015, which is 7.3% more than in 2014. In its annual report for 2015 the ICAO forecasts that by 2040 the number of passengers is expected to grow to 10 billion.

According to SURS data, 1.44 million passengers travelled through the three Slovenian international airports in 2015, 8.2% more than a decade ago (1.33 million in 2006), but still 12.9% fewer than in 2008, when the highest number of passengers (1.65 million) travelled through these airports in public air transport.

The large majority of the passengers arrives to and departs from Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport. In 2015 most passengers travelled to and from (16.2%), followed by the United Kingdom (11.0%), (9.8%), (8.6%), (7.5%), (7.2%), (5.1%), (4.4%), Greece (4.2%), Albania (4.1%), etc.

The Statistical Register of Employment, which contains only persons who are included in compulsory social insurance in Slovenia, listed 191 pilots in 2015; fewer than 5 of them female. How many exactly cannot be stated without breaching confidentiality. In addition, the register listed 34 female and 144 male flight controllers and 41 air traffic safety technicians (again fewer than 5 of them women).

How much on average did these people earn per month gross? Pilots earned on average EUR 4,756 (earnings of female pilots cannot be disclosed), female flight controllers earned on average EUR 5,066 and their male colleagues EUR 6,340, and air traffic safety technicians on average EUR 3,112 (again earnings of female air traffic safety technicians cannot be disclosed as there were fewer than 5). For comparison, average monthly gross earnings in Slovenia in 2015 amounted to EUR 1,649.
