About Dalian University of Technology

Dalian University of Technology (DUT) is located in the beautiful coastal city of Dalian, in northeastern China's Province. It is one of the key universities under the direct leadership of the State Ministry of Education. Having experienced the severe trials of over half a century, and having gone through the persistent efforts of several generations, DUT has developed into a comprehensive university of science and technology. Engineering is DUT's main concentration, with other departments including applied sciences and economic management sciences, as well as humanities disciplines, which include the social sciences and law. There are 7 faculties and 7 schools with more than 33,000 full-time students. DUT is doing actively in academic exchange with other science and technology organizations, both in domestic and abroad. DUT has signed academic agreements with more than 168 higher education institutions and scientific research in more than 24 different countries and regions. The university is known for its motto: "Unity, Enterprise, Realism and Originality". DUT has fostered and trained millions of men and women of various professions, who are widely welcomed throughout the society. With the support of "the 985 Project" and "the 211 Project", bringing forth the spirit of innovation, DUT is engaged in grasping the historic opportunity of rejuvenating the old northeastern industrial base, and carrying out a talent-training strategy in the hope of building DUT into a world-famous and research-oriented university.

About School of International Education

DUT’s international education started from 1960’s. Since then, there are over 8000 international students from over 100 countries who have studied here at DUT. In 2012, more than 1000 international students are on the DUT campus. During the years, based on DUT’s science and technology research strength and excellent teaching and education resources, DUT’s international education has got sound developments with non-degree seeking programs and degree seeking programs. In the year of 2012, Dalian University of Technology was evaluated as “Liaoning Provincial Demonstration Base for International Students Education”. The non-degree seeking programs at DUT include International Summer School, long or short term Chinese language learning and training courses provided by SIE’s Chinese Language Center, credit transfer programs, etc. Degree seeking programs include Chinese Language bachelor program for international students, English-medium bachelor programs, English-medium master programs, English-medium doctoral programs and all the other degree programs offered at DUT. School of International Education (SIE), Dalian University of Technology (DUT), founded on March 8, 2013, is a multifunctional administrative and academic unit which is responsible for the admission, education, management of international students, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, TCFL research, etc. SIE adheres to the DUT’s philosophy, upholds the motto of “vast ocean taking all the streams, self-cultivation, devotion to study”, aims to educate the students to become international talents familiar with Chinese culture and having good understanding of multicultural communication, thus contributing to the building DUT into a world-recognized research-oriented university.

SIE consists of 6 departments: Department of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, General Affairs Office, Students Affairs Office, Teaching Affairs Office, Recruitment and Admission Office and Confucius Institute Administration Office. SIE has a professional, experienced academic team of faculties more than 50% of whom are associate professors and a team of administrative staff who have overseas study and living experience, serving at SIE for many years. SIE not only provides qualified and scientific language training and programs, but also provides various services for international students including psychological consultation, visa service, study consultation, etc. SIE is the active organizer for international students’ colorful campus life and Chinese culture experiences. Every year SIE organizes a lot of language practice and internships, cultural tours, business and industry visits, as well as a good number of campus activities including Chinese Speech Contest, DUT Campus Carnival, International Cultural Festival etc.

Session 1

Energy Policy and Economics in China

Introduction

This six week summer program focuses on energy and environment policy and business in China, the second largest economy in the world, and how China is dealing with the energy and environmental challenges caused by the growth of the Chinese economy. Students will take 6 credits of pre-determined courses focusing on energy, business, and environmental policy in China. The credits can be transferred. They will also have options to take additional Chinese Language courses at DUT. Some extracurricular activities include tours in Dalian and neighboring cities, and visits to both domestic and foreign invested enterprises in Dalian.

Overview of the Chinese Economy

The modern Chinese economy consists of a unique combination of state control, state enterprises, and free market entrepreneurship. This course examines how these segments of the economy work together and how they have generated substantial economic growth for china.

Chinese Energy and Environment Policy and Management

China faces great challenges supplying energy for its growing economy, as well as issues of energy security. Moreover, with economic growth come increased concerns about pollution and other environmental problems. This course examines the Chinese energy and environment regulatory frameworks, how they have acted to increase energy production and protect the environment in China and the economic and business implications of these policies.

Chinese Language Courses

A Survival Chinese Language course and other advanced Chinese language courses are available for interested students. These courses are non-credit bearing, and have an additional cost that will be paid by the student to DUT directly.

Housing & Meals

Attendants will be housed in dormitories with other international students arranged by the School of International Education at Dalian University of Technology. Students will have access to a public kitchen if they wish to prepare their own meals, or they can eat at dining halls on campus.

 University students, undergraduates or postgraduates;  Age between 18 and 60 (including 18 and 60);  Physically and mentally healthy;

Session 2

International Summer Cap

Introduction

International Summer Camp is held every summer for Chinese language learners or for people who are interested in Chinese culture and society. ISS has two tracks: Chinese Culture and Environmental Issues which are taught in English. Here you can not only feel the unique glamour of Chinese culture and language, but also enjoy the multi-cultural exchanges which promotes your international understanding. You will make friends with students from China and other countries. ISS also organizes various activities including tours to Xi’an and , field trips to sewage treatment plants, cultural experiences, beach barbecue, etc. Every ISS begins in late July and lasts for 3-4 weeks every year.

Main Courses

 Basic Chinese & Oral Chinese (32 hrs.), Including oral Chinese, basic grammar, reading and writing at the beginning/intermediate level;  Survey of China (English-taught/6 hrs.), General introduction of contemporary China including Chinese geography, politics, economy and regional features;  Chinese Culture (English-taught/12 hrs.), Including ancient Chinese civilization, Confucius & Confucianism, Chinese traditional festivals, Chinese Traditional Musical Instruments;  Chinese History (English-taught/6 hrs.), Including ancient Chinese history, significant archeological discoveries;  Chinese Folk Arts Including Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting, Taichi, Chinese paper-cutting, Peking Opera, traditional Chinese costumes;

Dining Students have a multitude of dining options within the walking distance of DUT campus. Students will be able to eat in the university dining hall or at any of the local restaurants off and close to the campus. Public kitchens are also available for those who would like to prepare their own food. Campus card: it can be used on campus to pay for meals, laundry, gym, etc.

Session 3

Intensive Training in Chinese Language

Introduction Intensive Training on Chinese Language aims to improve international students’ practical Chinese language skills in a short time. By providing efficient language classes and organizing kinds of cultural activities, the program offers its participants a great opportunity to experience a real China and the diverse culture. The program consists of two parts—a major part of Chinese classes and a supplementary part of cultural experience activities.

Curriculum

About Dalian

Location On the east coast of Eurasia and the southern tip of Liaodong Peninsular in northeast China, Dalian stretches with the Yellow Sea on the east, the Bohai Sea on the west, facing the Shandong Peninsular across the sea on the south and backed up by the vast Northeast Plain on the north. Dalian covers an area of 12574 square kilometers, among which 2415 square kilometers of area is the old city. Dalian is the marine gateway of northeast China, North China, East China and the whole world. It is also an important port, and a trade, industry and tourism city. This area is abounding with mountains and hills, while plains and lowlands are rarely seen. The terrain, high and broad on the north, low and narrow on the south, tilts to the Yellow Sea on the southeast and the Bohai Sea on the northwest from the center. The region which faces the Yellow Sea is long and gentle. The Qianshan Mountain range of Chang Baishan Mountain system passes through the whole region from north to south. Mountain regions and long eroded foothills are widely dispersed within the region. Plains and lowlands are only interspersed near the confluence and in some valleys.

Climate Dalian weather belongs to a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate with ocean climate features and four distinct seasons. Dalian is a world-famous tourist and summer resort because of the pleasant weather in Dalian, scenic mountains and beaches. The summer in Dalian is not too hot, and winter is not too cold. It is the warmest city in Northeast China. • Average high temperature in July: 27.3 °C (81.1 °F) • Average low temperature in January: -6.8 °C (19.8 °F) • Continental, monsoon-influenced humid climate, annual precipitation: 602 mm (23.7 in)

Transportation

By Air

Located about 10km (6 miles) northwest of the city, Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport serves as an important transportation hub in the Bohai area. Thirty international routes connect Dalian to over 30 cities in 14 countries. There are regular charter service between Dalian and regions in Southeast Asia, Europe, American and Russia.

By Train

As the terminus of the Harbin-Dalian Railway (Ha Da Railway), Dalian is well connected to the networks that cross the northern and eastern parts of China. Trains from the city can reach all cities in Dongbei (northeastern China) and Beijing, Shanghai.

By Ship

As a northern Chinese port, and the third largest in China, Dalian has a well-developed water transport network. Scheduled passengers ships leave for Yantai, Weihai, Tianjing and Penglai. Passenger ships depart for Changhai Country daily. Ships also Incheon, Korea every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

By Long-distance Bus The city has two main highways that extend northeastward to cover the peninsular. One is the -Dalian Speedway, which connects the city to Shenyang, the provincial capital city of Liaoning, and runs parallel to the 202 national highway. The other is the Yellow Sea Speedway, starting from Dalian running along the coast to Dandong, another important city, next to the 201 national highway. This makes the connections between Dalian and the other four major cities very convenient.
