4 | accross Football Academies www.accrossfootball.co.uk The Academy - An Overview

Girls’ Academy

For over 50 years Accrington and Rossendale College has offered full-time and part-time education for both school leavers and adults throughout the North West.

The sports department has one of the best reputations in the country and offers courses from foundation to degree level. Graduates have gone on to be; premiership and football league players, top level coaches, teachers, fitness instructors and sports development officers.

The Football Academy was opened at Accrington and Rossendale College in 2008 with an initial intake of 20 female players. The Academy allows for school leavers to access a full time education programme that is embedded within a football programme within the environment of a professional club. Players will receive a full time college education along with training or game play every day led by top class tutors and world class coaches.

The Academy has already attracted the attention of many of the sports major players, Puma, Nuun Hydration, Herbalife, Blackburn Rovers Ladies, Preston North End, Accrington Stanley and JJB are just some of the names associated with the Academy, proving that its ability to produce academics and performers is endorsed by some of the market leaders.

New kit, supported by Puma for 2012/13 In September 2012 the Academy will enrol 12 new female players to complement our existing squad, and 18 new male players to complement our existing accross Boys’ Academy.

The football element of the Academy is run just like a professional football club. Players will have codes of conduct they must adhere to, covering everything from match and training clothing to on pitch conduct.

We pride ourselves on our professionalism and expect our players to be proud to be part of that. Our coaches have the highest standards and will only select players who, for example, can complete level 9 of the bleep test and apply themselves fully in training.

Academy players will train three days per week and have time throughout the year to undertake performance analysis using our Kandle Software. Matches will take place on a Wednesday afternoon. The Academy players will also benefit from the use of Polar Heart Rate Technology so that the coaches can ensure they are in peak physical condition.

Nat Taylor Boys’ Academy Captain

Our first graduate from the college academy to professional football, Nat Taylor made his debut for Accrington Stanley against Southend in August 2011 and has gone on to be a regular in John Coleman’ side. Nat admitted it was ‘breathtaking’ when he saw his name on a Stanley shirt. “I had been told though I had potential so with positive people around me it has made me drive on and Paul Lodge recommended me to John Coleman. In pre-season, I just tried my best, giving 110 per cent every session and it’s paid off. I couldn’t believe it when I was offered a professional contract. I have been working for it for so many years.” He said. “The college opened up doors for me as we got promoted to the Premier Performance College League and got to the semi- finals of the national college cup. I also got the chance to represent the county and England colleges.” Stanley manager John Coleman said: “Whenever you feel your job is getting you down or feel disappointed, the smile when I handed Nat his first contract – you can’t buy that and I know the lad will grab it with both hands.”
