And now, the news …

Guild 2012 Congratulations to all involved Council for Voluntary Service Central is delighted to extend heartfelt congratulations to all involved in making the Guild the superb celebration it was. We had a limited part in supporting the Guild team in organising the Community Procession and working with the Procession Producers, Walk the Plank, in supporting the workshops for participating groups. Based in the Guild Hall, along with the Guild Team, we know just how much effort went in behind the scenes. On behalf of the many groups from the sector that took part congratulations to all. But ... it's not over yet. We will be posting details of the remaining events from now until the end of the year.

A day to remember This year was branded “the people’s Guild” and the community procession really showed what that means. Groups from every walk of life in the city came together to walk as one in the Guild’s newest but biggest procession. The parade has grown hugely since its debut in 1992, when 2,000 people took part. Almost 8,500 participants walked, danced and sang their way through the city centre yesterday in a three-hour spectacle of noise, colour and fun, watched by a crowd of 30,000 spectators. http://www.lep.co.uk/news/local/a-day-to-remember-1-4909422

Larches and Savick Amateur Boxing Club: Vision for city’s future boxing stars Competitors young and old will soon be honing their hooks and jabs at Larches and Savick Amateur Boxing Club’s purpose-built centre in Preston. Over the past decade the club, in Elswick Road, Larches, nurtured thousands of young boxers and became so popular that it could no longer meet demand. But after years of fundraising the club secured the cash it needed to revamp its facilities, helped by a £75,000 grant from the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA), £50,000 from Sport England and £12,000 from Sported. Marcus Worthington Group, which is building the new club, also contributed £175,000 towards the project. http://www.lep.co.uk/community/club-s-vision-for-city-s-future-boxing-stars-1-4905797

Banking reforms 'put charities in danger', say voluntary sector leaders Planned reforms to the banking system will cost the charity sector millions of pounds, a coalition of major voluntary sector leaders has warned. They say the moves would leave charities with little protection in the event of a banking collapse. In a joint response to a consultation on the white paper Banking Reform, which closed last week, the Charity Finance Group, the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, the Charities Aid Foundation and the chief executives body Acevo said that charities should be granted preferred creditor status. This would ensure that they would have additional protection in the event of a banking collapse. The response said that without this status charities would be forced to keep their money in less risky accounts, which give less interest. Charities currently hold about £18bn in cash deposits.

The Cabinet Office reduced its total grant funding by about £17.6m last year, according to its most recent set of accounts The Cabinet Office accounts, published last month, revealed that grant funding was £195.7m in the financial year 2011/12, compared £218.1m in the previous year. Total spending by the Office for Civil Society however was £184m, a rise from £120m. The Cabinet Office said it had missed its target to train 800 community organisers by the end of the year, but remained on track to train 5,000 by 2015. It said that the average cost of training a senior organiser was £676, and for training a mid-level organiser the figure was £190.

Remember A Charity launches plaques to recognise projects made possible by legacy giving Remember A Charity has launched a new yellow memorial plaque scheme that is designed to recognise the contribution made to charities by people who leave gifts in their wills. Remember A Charity, a consortium of 140 charities that work together to encourage legacy giving, said the scheme was inspired by the blue plaques awarded by English Heritage that commemorate links between historic figures and the buildings where they lived and worked. Remember A Charity hopes that the idea will encourage more people to leave a gift to charity in their wills. It has announced the first 15 plaques that have been awarded to charitable projects and initiatives that were possible because of legacy gifts. ChildLine, Cancer Research UK, Guide Dogs and Liverpool Cathedral were among the first charities to receive a plaque. Legacy giving is worth around £2bn a year in the UK, which is the equivalent of 19 Comic Relief appeals, Remember A Charity said. It accounts for 30 per cent of the income of the UK’s top 10 charities, but only 7 per cent of people currently include a charity in their will.

I am planning to shout about Age Concern Central Lancashire loud and clear, so you may get used to hearing the name; I look forward to meeting you in person. William Shawcross controversially appointed next Charity Commission Chair Three of seven MPs on the Public Administration Select Committee voted against his proposed appointment by the Cabinet Office. "Mr Shawcross is a well-respected but controversial journalist and has written articles, all on his website, defending Rupert Murdoch and Guantanamo Bay and expressing his support for the Iraq war as well as attacking the previous government. He is, of course, entitled to express all those views as a journalist, but to then seek to also be the chair of the Charity Commission is just not tenable", said Liberal Democrat MP Greg Mulholland. Mr Shawcross told MPs that he was warned the role was a "poisoned chalice" when considering whether he should apply.
