2011-12 Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles Cross Country and Track & Field 2 Co a c h i n g St a f f

After leading the Golden Eagle cross country and teams to outstanding accomplishments in 2010-11, Christopher Asher returns for his 10th season as Cal State L.A.’s head coach for women’s cross country, women’s indoor track and field and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. Asher led the men’s outdoor track and field team to a ninth-place national finish, which gives Cal State L.A. consecutive national -10 finishes for the first time since 1995-96. The women’s outdoor track and field team finished third in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, the women’s indoor team wound up 43rd in the nation and the cross country team finished fourth in the CCAA for a second straight season. The highlight of the 2010-11 season came in men’s outdoor track and field where the Golden Eagles had a pair of national champions. Giorgio Bryant won the national title in the long jump and Josh Como won the national championship in the triple jump. The two championships marked the first time since 1996 that Cal State L.A. had claimed multiple individual national titles. Christopher Asher The men’s team also claimed seven individual titles at the CCAA Championships on their way to a second-place finish, its Head Coach best since 2008. The women’s outdoor track and field team got a pair of All-America performances and finished 29th in the nation while also claiming three individual CCAA championships on its way to a third-place finish in the conference. It was a good follow-up to the 2009-10 season when Asher led the men’s outdoor track and field team to a sixth-place national finish, which was its best since 1998. The women’s outdoor team finished third in the CCAA and 38th in the nation, the women’s indoor team was 44th in the nation and the cross country team finished fourth in the CCAA. That success came on the heels of an outstanding performance in the 2008-09 season. Asher led the women’s outdoor track and field team to a seventh- place national showing, which was its best finish since 1996. The women’s indoor track and field team took 26th in the country and the men’s outdoor track and field team took 41st in the nation. The women’s outdoor track and field team finished second in the CCAA. In the 2007-08 season, Asher led the women’s cross country team to its first CCAA championship since 1994 and guided the squad to a second-place finish in the West Region and a fifth-place national finish. He also led the women’s indoor track and field team to an 11th-place national finish that included a national championship for triple jumper Omonike Kotey. The men’s track and field team finished seventh in the nation after an impressive second-place showing in the CCAA, while the women’s track and field team finished third in the conference. He was named the CCAA Coach of the Year in women’s cross country and the USTFCCCA West Region Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Head Coach of the Year. That season was an impressive follow-up to a memorable 2006-07 campaign. Asher led the women’s cross country team to an NCAA Division II West Region championship, a second-place finish in the CCAA and a fourth-place finish in the NCAA Division II Championships in 2006. The fourth-place finish is the highest national placing in the program’s history. He also led the 2007 women’s indoor track and field team to a 13th-place national finish. The men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams both posted national top-25 finishes. The men placed 21st in the country, while the women wound up 24th. During his first nine years, Asher has coached four individual NCAA champions: Josh Como in the 2011 triple jump, Giorgio Bryant in the 2011 long jump, Omonike Kotey in the 2008 indoor triple jump title and April Brown, in the 2006 indoor 60 meters. Cal State L.A. has picked up 66 CCAA individual titles, including 63 in track and field (41 in men’s track and field and 22 in women’s track and field) during his tenure. The Golden Eagles earned 10 individual conference championships and 30 All-CCAA awards in men’s and women’s track and field combined in 2011. In Asher’s nine years as head coach, the Golden Eagles have earned 207 All-CCAA awards (99 in men’s track, 88 in women’s track and 20 in cross country). The Golden Eagles also had individual CCAA cross country champions in 2002, 2003 and 2007. Also, the Golden Eagles have earned 77 All-America honors in cross country and track and field since Asher took over as head coach, including five in 2010-11 (one in indoor track and field, two in men’s outdoor track and field and two in women’s outdoor track and field), nine in 2009-10 (one in indoor track and field, five in men’s outdoor track and field and three in women’s outdoor track and field) and nine in 2008-09 (two in indoor track and field, one in men’s outdoor track and field and six in women’s outdoor track and field). Christopher Asher ** NCAA Championships are Division II unless noted About Jesse Owens Track Jesse Owens Track in the Billie Jean King Sports Complex is home to the Cal State L.A. soccer and track and field teams. With permanent bleacher seating for 5,000 spectators, it also hosts many other events throughout the year, including the University’s commencement ceremony each June.

In preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, Cal State L.A. was selected as one of six sites to construct a world- class training track. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on January 29, 1982.

The initial surface selected by the L.A. Organizing Committee for the track was “Recaflex S.” This surface, known for its versatility, is hard enough to record fast times but still soft enough to allow for a regular training regiment.

The track was officially dedicated on May 22, 1983, during the L.A. Regional Championships of the ARCO Jesse Owens Games.

Since Cal State L.A. was founded in 1947, at least one Golden Eagle track and field athlete has competed in 13 of the 16 Summer Olympics. In fact, CSULA had a track and field representative in 11-straight Summer Games, beginning with the 1960 Olympics in and ending in 2000 at the Sydney Games.

A total of 23 Cal State L.A. track and field athletes, representing 10 nations, have qualified for the Olympics in 52 total events, capturing 15 medals (six gold, eight silver, one bronze).

As a member of Cal State L.A.’s track and field team from 1983 to 1985, she had many top finishes sandwiched around an eighth-place finish for her native Jamaica in the 1984 Olympics. Then Farmer-Patrick’s career really accelerated. In 1987, she just missed a medal in the 400m hurdles at the World Championships in Rome. As a 400m hurdler for the U.S., she won a silver medal at the 1992 Olympics, gold medal at the 1989 and 1992 World Cups, gold medal at the 1990 Goodwill Games, and numerous other medals. Competing in glamorous skirt-outfits, she launched a side career starring in many television commercials. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial psychology and a master’s degree in human resources. At the 2004 summer , she served as the lead athlete services coordinator for all sports. She currently chairs the USA Track & Field’s Athlete’s Advisory Committee and serves as the United States Olympic Committee’s athlete representative. Farmer-Patrick is married to another Olympic hurdler, David

Sandra Farmer-Patrick Patrick. They have a son and a daughter.
