INSTITUTIONAL FACT BOOK

2017 Edition

ROGERS STATE UNIVERSITY Claremore,

Office of Accountability and Academics Institutional Fact Book

The information contained in the Institutional Fact Book is collected from several institutional offices. The enrollment and faculty data are based on the preliminary data stored after the last day to drop courses with no grade record, which is traditionally the end of the second week of classes. The tuition information is provided by the Office of the Bursar and the fiscal data is provided by the Budgeting and Accounting Department. Please note that, to the extent possible, the data presented on the following pages represent snapshots taken at the same time of the academic year. In some instances, however, variations in reporting cycles have limited our ability to do so. For this reason, the reader who attempts to cross-reference certain data tables may find discrepancies which may not be due to inaccuracies in the data. Additional copies may be printed or downloaded from the RSU Accountability and Academics website (http://www.rsu.edu/about/accountability-academics/).

RSU Partners with Google for STEM Competition. More than 150 middle and high school students from around northeastern Oklahoma competed in the AeroGamesNXT powered by Google, a STEM-based competition focused on aviation. The March 31 event was the fifth time RSU has worked with Googlers to host the competition. This year’s event also included Geek Street, an educational showcase of local businesses and industries that demonstrated how they apply STEM principles in the workplace. Awards were given to the first, second and third place finishers, best crash, most creative, and school spirit. RSU, Partners Dedicate Scientific Research Station. RSU, the RSU Foundation, The Conservation Fund and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service formally dedicated a research station near Claremore intended to conserve Oklahoma’s native woodlands and aid in protection of endangered species such as the American Burying Beetle. The RSU Scientific Field Research Station is a collaborative public-private partnership to allow RSU faculty and students conduct research on the 260-acre, undeveloped site about five miles southwest of Claremore. The property is owned by the RSU Foundation for exclusive use by RSU faculty, students and other researchers coordinated through the university.

The lead gift for the simulation lab came through a grant from Founders of Doctors’ Hospital Inc., along with additional funding through academic fees for nursing students. The ribbon cutting was held in conjunction with RSU Homecoming week activities that included the first reunion of

Student Center Renamed After Longtime Faculty Member. Longtime RSU faculty member Dr. Carolyn Taylor was honored during a surprise announcement on Sept. 13 when university officials revealed the campus student center would now carry her name to honor her impact as an educator and legislator. The Dr. Carolyn Taylor Center, formerly known as the Centennial Center, serves as a centerpiece for campus and community, which is a fitting tribute to someone who has had a remarkable impact on both the university and the state. Also speaking on behalf of her impact as a teacher and state leader was OU President David Boren. The naming announcement was made during a community reception with the OU Board of Regents, RSU’s governing body, which was meeting on campus.

A grant from Phillps66 this fall provided teachers with lessons and resources to provide more hands-on teaching for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) training. RSU-Bartlesville hosted the two-part workshop coordinated by Dr. Jamie Graham, head of RSU’s Department of Math and Physical Sciences. About 25 elementary and middle school teachers from Bartlesville and Dewey participated in a three-day workshop during August that provided the teachers with low-cost solutions to demonstrate sophisticated science principles in their classrooms. The teachers reconvened later in the semester to review and evaluate how their STEM lessons had gone.

A week-long residential camp, ART Academy was held June 12-16 on the RSU Claremore campus with students staying in RSU’s campus housing. The camp offered students a hands-on classroom experience in a college environment. The camp’s goal is to help at-risk youth encounter a college environment via diverse learning experiences. Many participants would be the first in their family to attend college. The camp was funded through GEAR UP and a grant from AT&T Aspire.

The second annual AeroCamp Summer Academy brought 24 students from 6th, 7th and 8th grade to a three-day camp focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematic (STEM) concepts through hands-on, aerospace-related devices. The camp was funded through the Google Unmanned Aero Vehicle (UAV) Grant and contributions from MidAmerica Industrial Park and the RSU Foundation. The Pryor campus also hosted 22 Mayes County girls in the inaugural STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) Academy focused on teaching 5th and 6th grade girls about robotics, coding, animation and other related topics during the three-day camp.

MLK Week of Service. One of the largest community service events of its kind in the region, RSU’s Martin Luther King Jr. Week of Service was held Jan. 20-27. Several hundred students, faculty and staff volunteered throughout the region, including service days on Jan. 22 and 27 at area schools. Additionally, students and community members attended an MLK Remembrance Ceremony and Concert highlighted by performances by Tulsa’s Booker T. Washington High School Choir and RSU students.
