3 Welcome to Charlotte, North Carolina! I am Alyssa Levine, a native Charlottean and very proud president of the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys. As a third-generation attorney and second-generation woman attorney, I am so excited that NCAWA is hosting the 2018 Annual Conference in the Queen City for the first time. In honor of NCAWA’s 40th anniversary, this year’s theme is: “40 Years of Women Chipping Away at the Glass Ceiling: Empowering Future Generations to Shatter What Remains.”

The 2018 Annual Conference program focuses on empowerment through professional support, education, and self-care. I am hopeful that your participation in this conference will inspire you to accomplish a number of important goals. I hope that each of you will make many meaningful statewide connections through the numerous opportunities to network and socialize. I hope that once you hear our Founding Mothers speak about the evolution of NCAWA and the practice of law, you will embrace and support NCAWA’s mission. I hope that you will bid high and often on our amazing silent auction items, knowing that your donations will fund the Sarah Parker Scholarships that we award annually to leading women law students. I hope that you will learn something new from our Keynote Speaker Laura Nirider about individuals wrongfully convicted of crimes when they were children and teenagers and why their experiences in the criminal justice system matter to the legal profession. From Cybersecurity to Negotiating Better Outcomes, from changes in DACA laws to Daubert Challenges and Expert Testimony, from the new N.C. Uniform Power of Attorney Act to Criminal Court Fees and more - I hope that you will share these dynamic continuing legal education course materials with your practices across the state. I hope that NCAWA Lobbyist Ashley Perkinson’s Legislative Update will motivate you to vote and to participate on the Government Action Committee. Finally, besides leaving the Annual Conference more informed, I hope that our mental health CLE, “Using Mindfulness to Improve Your Legal Practice,” will re-energize you to conquer the challenges that remain for women attorneys.

Thank you for joining us at the 2018 NCAWA Annual Conference. I look forward to talking with as many of you as possible. Have a wonderful time!

Alyssa Levine 2018 President, NCAWA
