A ROAD accident involving a car and an 18-year-old male pedestrian at Lymm has reignited a campaign launched earlier this year by residents. The incident was at the junction of High Legh Road and Kay Lane. As a result, the pedestrian was taken to hospital with serious head and spinal injuries and police issued an appeal for witnesses. Residents of High Legh Road and adjoining Park Road organised a petition back in March, calling for trafLc calming measures in High Legh Road. Organiser Paul Thompson questioned why, when the borough council was considering 20mph speed limits on residential roads, there was a 40mph limit in High Legh Road. Motoring For when a car won't do!

GENERAL Motors, who earlier this year were making the bold claim that the Vauxhall Ampera was the Lrst electric car for everyday use, have now come up with a concept vehicle for places where a car can't be used at all. The Vauxhall/Opel RAD e is described as a future vision of environmentally-friendly urban mobility. GM say the RAD e takes many of its design cues from the Ampera and is a response to the increasing role e-bikes are predicted to play in future integrated urban transport systems. It is the Lrst e-bike to be designed around automotive manufacturing mass production methods. Instead of exotic light-weight materials, its designers opted for a hollow pressed-steel frame, which is light, strong, Mexible and easy to make. Powering the "pedelec" propulsion system is a state- of-the-art 250 watt electric motor and lithium-ion battery. The battery can be fully charged in just two- and-a-half hours, and the bike can be transported on a specially adapted FlexFix carrier that allows it to be charged while it's on the move. Delivering at least 40Nm of instant torque, the RAD e feels agile and responsive. The motor gives the rider support when pedalling, but will provide between 40- 90 miles of pure electrical drive if required, depending on terrain and based on a 20mph average speed. It has a user-friendly, smartphone-based control unit which unlocks the engine and provides real-time data on range, speed and exact location. What it doesn't cater, for of course, is summers like the one we have just endured! September 2012 www.lymmlife.co.uk 11 Club's £69,000 practice area opens

LYMM Oughtrington Park Cricket Club's new £69,000 three-bay synthetic practice area has been of@cially opened by Warrington South MP David Mowat. The facility was provided with the help of a £59,841 from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in partnership with Sport England. Mr Mowat was accompanied by former club player Neville Woodyatt, in the absence of his wife, Cllr Sheila Woodyatt, who was unwell. The grant was part of the ECB's national strategy to increase the number of people playing sport. Lymm Oughtrington Park was identiPed as a club of strategic importance because of the strength of its junior programme and its efforts to develop and encourage women and girls to play the game. Club chairman Paul Henbrey said: "Because we had to negotiate a long term lease on some adjoining land this project has taken four years to reach fruition. Consequently, we were thrilled and excited when we were awarded the grant because we urgently needed to up-grade and extend the coaching facilities at the club. "We have eight ECB qualiPed coaches and we have no doubt that the high quality synthetic pitches will enable us to create more coaching and play opportunities. The pitches are perfect for the development of young cricketers but all age groups will benePt. I believe this facility will attract more players to the club and we have made a commitment to increase the number of women and girls playing cricket. "We are extremely grateful to the ECB and Sport England for their most generous support because we could not afford this high class coaching facility from our own resources."

Connor will pipe for the Queen ARMY cadet Connor Davidson, aged 13, from Lymm was selected to play in the Army Cadet Force Massed Pipes and Drums Band, in front of the Queen, at Balmoral Castle, in August. Connor is a member of Greater Manchester Army Cadet Force's Pipes and Drums. He joined the Army Cadet Force in 2010 as a recruit, and since then has become a most proPcient piper, and at a recent training course in Inverness, was commended by his instructors for his excellent style of playing. His younger sister, Becky is also a piper in the band, and Mum Nicola, is a volunteer adult instructor, handling the administration. Since joining the cadets, Connor has travelled all over the United Kingdom and to a number of European Countries, taking part in both military parades and civilian piping competitions. He will be travelling to France later in the year, to take part in Remembrance ceremonies in the town of Valenciennes. Earlier this year Connor attended the Annual Army Cadet Force and Combined Cadet Forces Piping and Drumming Concentration in Inverness, and last month, he was selected to be a member of the Central Army Cadet Force Pipes and Drums Band which entertained at the Scottish Reserve Forces and Cadets Association Beating The Retreat ceremony, in the centre of Edinburgh.

Shoppers' vote gives charity a boost A LYMM charity is set to benePt from a year's fundraising - following a vote by local shoppers. Lymm Youth and Community Association has been chosen as Sainsbury's new local charity partner for the coming year, following the vote by customers in the Lymm store. The partnership ofPcially launched at the end of July and customers can now choose to make a donation in-store to the association, whose headquarters are just round the corner in Bridgewater Street. The charity helps local groups by providing a place to meet, including Senior Socials, Dance Classes, Film Club and Youth Activities. Last year's charity partner was Lymm Village Hall Pre-School, and they benePted to the tune of £600, which will go towards new equipment, such as cameras and a printer. Store manager Allen Wales said: "Lymm Youth and Community Association is such a worthy local cause and we're pleased and proud to be supporting it over the next 12 months.
