INAUGURATION OF “COL CHEWANG RINCHEN SETU” IN EASTERN UNDER PROJECT HIMANK

On 21 Oct 2019, yet another feather was added to the cap of Border Roads Organisation, when Shri Rajnath Singh Hon’ble Raksha Mantri inaugurated the Col Chewang Rinchen SETU in Eastern Ladakh.

Col Chewang Rinchen, MVC*, SM born on 11th Nov 1931 at Sumur, Valley in Ladakh region, is also known as the “Lion of Ladakh” for his Extra Ordinary acts of courage in defending and Partapur sector. He is one of only six Indian Service personnel to have been twice awarded the (MVC) the second highest Indian Gallantry Award.

This 430 Mtr Bridge constructed on Shyok River, is one of its kind built using Micro Piling Technology, and completed under the leadership of Lt Col KJR Reddy, OC 1445 BCC of 50 BRTF.

Speaking on the occasion Lt Gen Harpal Singh, AVSM, VSM, DGBR highlighted the salient features of the bridge and complimented the team of BRO officers and men for taking on the challenge and constructing this bridge in a short span of 15 working months. Shri Rajnath Singh during his address congratulated the Border Road Organization for yet another achievement. Hon’ble Raksha Mantri highlighted the difficulties faced in super High Altitude areas of Eastern Ladakh. He complimented all members of Project Himank for constructing the highest multi span permanent bridge of . Hon’ble Raksha Mantri also facilitated Dr Phunsog Angmo daughter of Col Chewang Rinchen for the contribution made by her Father in service to the nation.

Also present on the occasion were Gen Bipin Rawat, Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Ranbir Singh, Northern Army Commander. Welcoming Shri Rajnath Singh, Shri Gyal P Wangyal, CEC, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council appreciated the work being done by the Govt. for the socio economic development of Ladakh and in facilitating the movement of locals and tourists.
