President Trump:

We are some of the millions of Americans who have been directly impacted by COVID-19. We are children, parents, spouses, and siblings of those who have lost their battle with this virus. We are also some of the tens of thousands of Americans who are testing COVID-19 positive every day and living with the long term health effects of this relentless virus.

Together, we represent a human toll that is staggering to describe. On an average day, more than 43,000 Americans test positive for COVID-19 and hundreds die. We come from diverse backgrounds. We are Republicans, Democrats, and Independents, and some of our loved ones voted for you in 2016.

Recently, you joined the millions of Americans who tested positive for COVID-19. You survived with the benefit of world-class health care and medications that were not available to many of our loved ones. We are thankful that you appear to be recovering and that you did not suffer the same fate as many of our family members. We also wish that the level of care you received was available to our loved ones, too. If it had, they may still be alive today.

This week, you said, “D on't be afraid of COVID-19. Don't let it dominate your life. ” These words are extremely disrespectful to the memories of our loved ones, minimize the terrible impacts of this virus, and put the safety of the American people at risk.

And today, we come together as a community of survivors to speak out because we believe that you and your administration have cruelly mismanaged this pandemic and have contributed to the deaths and suffering of countless Americans. Your failed leadership continues to put millions of lives at risk.

This is negligence and a callous disregard for our suffering. It is a betrayal of your duty to protect the health and wellbeing of all Americans. We deserve better. We d emand better. Your lies and gross mismanagement of the pandemic response has led to a staggering death toll across America that no other developed nation is experiencing: more than 210,000 lives. And this number continues to grow every day.

President Trump, you may have accepted this as our reality, but we do not. We reject the idea that there is nothing that can be done.

We demand a data-driven pandemic response plan that is based on proven prevention and outbreak reduction strategies, an economic reopening plan that prioritizes the safety of all Americans, and direct support for those most impacted by COVID-19. These are common-sense steps endorsed by leading science experts, as well as leaders on both sides of the aisle.

This is especially urgent because COVID-19 has also disproportionately impacted communities of color. In America, a person of color is three times more likely to be diagnosed with COVID-19 and five times

more likely to be hospitalized, compared to white people. Latinos are uninsured at a percentage three times higher and Black people are uninsured at nearly twice the percentage of white people.

We honor our loved ones taken from this deadly virus and our own experiences surviving COVID-19 by speaking out now. We share our stories so that others do not have to experience our pain. N ow is the time for action. After 7 months of national, shared sacrifice, it is time for our elected officials to d o more.

We demand that our leaders confront the seriousness of this pandemic with a serious plan of action, and with empathy, compassion, and truthfulness. Our lives literally depend on it.
