On a Day in 2000, at a Certain Pub, the Three Creators of the Big O Got Together and to Discuss Their Passionate Thoughts…!
On a day in 2000, at a certain pub, the three creators of The Big O got together and to discuss their passionate thoughts…! Kazuyoshi Katayama The director of The Big O, he has also worked on other anime including Sentimental Journey and Giant Robo. An established pro of robot dramas. Keiichi Sato The Big O character and mecha designer/supervisor. He has worked with director Kazuyoshi Katayama since Giant Robo, and has also worked on the City Hunter TV special. Hitoshi Ariga The Big O manga artist (see inside front cover for more information). The Big O is finally starting to be released on video/DVD. Ariga: I‟d like people who weren‟t able to catch it on TV to take this opportunity to check it out Sato: Even people who dismissed it by just saying “I don‟t have cable.” [The Big O was originally shown in Japan on the Wowow cable channel—Ed.] But I guess that‟s how it is. When you can‟t see it, it‟s sour grapes. Ariga: I was hoping that the manga would help to get people interested. I‟m hoping it‟ll get people to buy the DVDs and videos, so it‟s an important piece of media in that respect. I know that I shouldn‟t stray too far. Sato: Well, we‟re going to keep needing your help. (laughs) Ariga: I‟ll do my best. (laughs) Katayama: Well, I‟d like people to enjoy the world of The Big O by both reading the manga and watching the anime. -
The Rise of Controversial Content in Film
The Climb of Controversial Film Content by Ashley Haygood Submitted to the Department of Communication Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in Communication at Liberty University May 2007 Film Content ii Abstract This study looks at the change in controversial content in films during the 20th century. Original films made prior to 1968 and their remakes produced after were compared in the content areas of profanity, nudity, sexual content, alcohol and drug use, and violence. The advent of television, post-war effects and a proposed “Hollywood elite” are discussed as possible causes for the increase in controversial content. Commentary from industry professionals on the change in content is presented, along with an overview of American culture and the history of the film industry. Key words: film content, controversial content, film history, Hollywood, film industry, film remakes i. Film Content iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank my family for their unwavering support during the last three years. Without their help and encouragement, I would not have made it through this program. I would also like to thank the professors of the Communications Department from whom I have learned skills and information that I will take with me into a life-long career in communications. Lastly, I would like to thank my wonderful Thesis committee, especially Dr. Kelly who has shown me great patience during this process. I have only grown as a scholar from this experience. ii. Teen Titans Go! to the Movies’
Movie Review: ‘Teen Titans Go! To the Movies’ NEW YORK — Though a mixed bag of good values and a bit of dodgy humor renders it acceptable but not ideal for kids, sharp satire makes the witty animated comedy “Teen Titans Go! To the Movies” (Warner Bros.) a hoot for their elders. As it skewers a broad range of subjects, from some politicians’ preoccupation with the size of their hands to 1980s-style anthems of affirmation, the film wins smiles and laughs at a remarkably steady pace. Even the plot is a vehicle for mockery. A youthful version of Batman’s sidekick Robin (voice of Scott Menville) becomes obsessed by the fact that, unlike all other superheroes, no movie has ever been made about him. The other members of the ensemble of crime fighters Robin leads — shape-shifting Beast Boy (voice of Greg Cipes), human-mechanical mashup Cyborg (voice of Khary Payton), teleporting Raven (voice of Tara Strong) and alien princess Starfire (voice of Hynden Walch) — don’t share his fixation with Hollywood. But, as supportive pals, they go along for the ride. Through their battle with master mind manipulator Slade (voice of Will Arnett) the team acquires the evil nemesis considered essential to their quest. And they eventually convince Tinseltown director Jade Wilson (voice of Kristen Bell) to feature them. But Robin’s ego and the silliness of his pals get in the way, leading to a breakup of the group. As Robin and his buddies strive to be taken seriously, this big-screen adaptation of the Cartoon Network TV series hilariously harpoons a wide range of pop-culture targets in a manner that will amuse grownups. -

Gaming Habits and Self-Determination: Conscious and Non-Conscious Paths to Behavior Continuance
GAMING HABITS AND SELF-DETERMINATION: CONSCIOUS AND NON-CONSCIOUS PATHS TO BEHAVIOR CONTINUANCE By Donghee Yvette Wohn A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Media and Information Studies – Doctor of Philosophy 2013 ABSTRACT GAMING HABITS AND SELF-DETERMINATION: CONSCIOUS AND NON-CONSCIOUS PATHS TO BEHAVIOR CONTINUANCE By Donghee Yvette Wohn This dissertation examines how non-conscious habits and conscious motivations contribute to an individual’s intention to continue playing online multiplayer games. It empirically examines distinct predictions of behavioral intention based on different theories in two gaming contexts—casual social network games (SNGs) and massively multiplayer online games (MMOs). Addressing inconsistencies in prior studies, habit is conceptualized as the mental construct of automaticity, thus distinguishing habit from frequency of past behavior and self-identity. Results indicate that strong habits positively predict behavior continuation intention and moderate the effect of motivation for SNGs but not MMOs. Self-identity was a positive predictor for both genres. Gender differences in self-determined motivation were present in social network games but not massively multiplayer online games. The residual effect of past behavior was stronger than any conscious or non-conscious processes; once perceived frequency of past behavior was taken into consideration, it was the strongest indicator of behavioral continuation intentions. Copyright by DONGHEE YVETTE WOHN 2013 Dedicated to my progressive grandparents, who believed that higher education was the most important indicator of success for a woman. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank my dear advisor, Robert LaRose, whose sharp critiques have prepared me for the most ferocious of peer reviewers; whose brilliant insights bore holes in dams of existing scholarship, making way for innovative paradigms; and whose sincere love for students represents the pinnacle of the true spirit of higher education.
