Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Project Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (Mission, Spacecraft and PSO) The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter mission launched in August 2005 from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station arriving at Mars in March 2006 started science operations in November 2006. MRO has completed 10 years since launch (50,000 orbits by Mar 2017) and to date has returned nearly 300 Terabytes of data. MRO Primary Science Orbit (PSO): • Sun-synchronous orbit ascending node at 3:00 PM ± 15 minutes Local Mean Solar Time (LMST) (daylight equatorial crossing) • Periapsis is frozen about the Mars South Pole • Near-repeat ground track walk (GTW) every 17-day, 211 orbit (short-term repeat) MRO targeting cycle, exact repeat after 4602 orbits. The nominal GTW is 32.45811 km West each 211 orbit cycle (maintained with periodic maneuvers). MRO Spacecraft: • Spacecraft Bus: 3-axis stabilized ACS system; 3-meter diameter High Gain Antenna; hydrazine propulsion system • Instrument Suite: HiRISE Camera, CRISM Imaging spectrometer, Mars Climate Sounder, Mars Color Imager, Context Camera, Shallow Subsurface Radar, Electra engineering payload (among other instrument payloads) 2/07/17 MRO support of ExoMars Schiaparelli Lander Overflight Relay PRM-3 4. MRO shall have good overflight pass geometry within the first 2 Sols after landing. -

Phobos, Deimos: Formation and Evolution Alex Soumbatov-Gur The moons are confirmed to be ejected parts of Mars’ crust. After explosive throwing out as cone-like rocks they plastically evolved with density decays and materials transformations. Their expansion evolutions were accompanied by global ruptures and small scale rock ejections with concurrent crater formations. The scenario reconciles orbital and physical parameters of the moons. It coherently explains dozens of their properties including spectra, appearances, size differences, crater locations, fracture symmetries, orbits, evolution trends, geologic activity, Phobos’ grooves, mechanism of their origin, etc. The ejective approach is also discussed in the context of observational data on near-Earth asteroids, main belt asteroids Steins, Vesta, and Mars. The approach incorporates known fission mechanism of formation of miniature asteroids, logically accounts for its outliers, and naturally explains formations of small celestial bodies of various sizes. -

The Velocity Dispersion Profile of the Remote Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
The Velocity Dispersion Profile of the Remote Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy Leo I: A Tidal Hit and Run? Mario Mateo1, Edward W. Olszewski2, and Matthew G. Walker3 ABSTRACT We present new kinematic results for a sample of 387 stars located in and around the Milky Way satellite dwarf spheroidal galaxy Leo I. These spectra were obtained with the Hectochelle multi-object echelle spectrograph on the MMT, and cover the MgI/Mgb lines at about 5200A.˚ Based on 297 repeat measure- ments of 108 stars, we estimate the mean velocity error (1σ) of our sample to be 2.4 km/s, with a systematic error of 1 km/s. Combined with earlier re- ≤ sults, we identify a final sample of 328 Leo I red giant members, from which we measure a mean heliocentric radial velocity of 282.9 0.5 km/s, and a mean ± radial velocity dispersion of 9.2 0.4 km/s for Leo I. The dispersion profile of ± Leo I is essentially flat from the center of the galaxy to beyond its classical ‘tidal’ radius, a result that is unaffected by contamination from field stars or binaries within our kinematic sample. We have fit the profile to a variety of equilibrium dynamical models and can strongly rule out models where mass follows light. Two-component Sersic+NFW models with tangentially anisotropic velocity dis- tributions fit the dispersion profile well, with isotropic models ruled out at a 95% confidence level. Within the projected radius sampled by our data ( 1040 pc), ∼ the mass and V-band mass-to-light ratio of Leo I estimated from equilibrium 7 models are in the ranges 5-7 10 M⊙ and 9-14 (solar units), respectively. -

Mars, Phobos, and Deimos Sample Return Enabled by ARRM Alternative Trade Study Spacecraft Jacob A. Englander,∗ Matthew A. Vavrina,† Bo Naasz ,‡ Raymond G. Merill,MinQu§ ¶ The Asteroid Robotic Redirect Mission (ARRM) has been the topic of many mission design studies since 2011.1 The reference ARRM spacecraft uses a powerful solar electric propulsion (SEP) system and a bag device to capture a small asteroid from an Earth-like orbit and redirect it to a distant retrograde orbit (DRO) around the moon. The ARRM Option B spacecraft uses the same propulsion system and multi-Degree of Freedom (DoF) manipulators device to retrieve a very large sample (thousands of kilograms) from a 100+ meter diameter farther-away Near Earth Asteroid (NEA). This study will demonstrate that the ARRM Option B spacecraft design can also be used to return samples from Mars and its moons - either by acquiring a large rock from the surface of Phobos or Deimos, and/or by rendezvousing with a sample-return spacecraft launched from the surface of Mars. I. Introduction The Asteroid Robotic Redirect Mission (ARRM) Option A concept, first introduced in 2011,1 is a mission design to capture and return a small near-Earth asteroid (NEA) to cislunar space. The ARRM Option B concept is a similar spacecraft, but designed to return a very large sample from a more difficult to reach NEA.2 In this work we show that the spacecraft designed for ARRM Option B is also well-suited to sample return from Mars and its moons. This work presents low-thrust interplanetary trajectories from cislunar space to Mars and back, including descent from the Martian sphere of influence (SOI) to the desired orbit altitude and ascent to the SOI after the sample retrieval is complete.
