Activity Report 2019 Activity Report 2019 - INSTITUT CARNOT M.I.N.E.S Editorial

Following its re-application for accreditation that started in June 2019, Institut Carnot M.I.N.E.S (which comprises the École des Mines de n

a

m Paris, Écoles des Mines integrated into Institut Mines Telecom, École r e a .V Polytechnique, ENSTA Paris, SIGMA Clermont graduate schools, MINES T - h c e ParisTech Foundation and Armines organisation) has had its accreditation sT ri Pa S renewed for the fourth time. Carnot Label accreditation confirms the graduate NE MI schools’ ability to put partner-oriented research with companies at the heart of © their strategy. Yannick VIMONT, With more than 2,000 research staff, Institut Carnot M.I.N.E.S performs 650 contracts Director of Institut Carnot M.I.N.E.S per year with 300 partner companies (more than €22M in 2019, an increase of 16% compared to 2018). Microenterprises, SMEs and mid-cap companies are becoming increasingly common. When its accreditation was renewed, Carnot M.I.N.E.S expanded and now includes the SIGMA Clermont graduate school and ENSTA’s UME mechanical engineering unit, 3 which both boost the Institute’s expertise in green chemistry, mechanics and predictive sciences, and its position with companies. It also confirms its position regarding the major transitions (energy, ecological, digital) that are shaping our world. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) RCP 8.5 scenario shows that the global average temperature could rise by 5°C by 2100, if there is no reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the coming years. Strategies to reduce these emissions mainly consist of using renewable energy sources (solar, wind, biomass), decarbonising Governance from fossil fuels, and research into energy efficiency in buildings, transport and industrial processes. The implementation of these strategies also requires control of multi-energy networks, combining storage capacity and ease of conversion between different forms of energy (electricity, gas, hydrogen, etc.) Director of Institut Carnot M.I.N.E.S It is in this context that the Hytrend project, Carnot M.I.N.E.S’ leading project in Yannick Vimont 2019, brings together the expertise of 14 of the Institute’s laboratories in hydrogen Operational Director production, CO2 capture and methanation to assess how the interactions between the Agnès Laboudigue various energy networks (gas, heat, electricity, CNG plants), hydrogen and CO2 sources, Deputy Directors gas storage needs and various processes could lead to competitive niche or large-scale David Delafosse applications for the deployment of Power to X. The Centre for Skills in Spraying Processes (Centre de compétences en procédés de projection - C2P) at MINES ParisTech Centre des matériaux has demonstrated that thermal spraying is an innovative process that can be used in the luxury goods industry for the 11 metallisation of heat-sensitive materials. Initially, the centre received Carnot funding to model the spray parameters, and then installed low-energy equipment with support from the CARATS project. In partnership with the Saint- Pepion © Jacques Gobain group, the Noir Vif design company and craft cabinetmakers Ludwig et Dominique, a DEEPTECH / CGS de MINES unique product, “Argo1” was developed: a crib ParisTech is supporting the structuring with the hood over the infant’s head coated of an ecosystem The Scientific Management Centre (Centre with a copper mesh that acts as a barrier de gestion scientifique - CGS) has set up an against electromagnetic waves.
