Private Sources at the National Archives

Private Accessions

1961–1988

1025

1 The attached finding aid lists all those collections received from private and institutional donors between the years 1961 and 1988. The accessioned records are of a miscellaneous nature – covering testamentary collections, estate collections, private correspondence, school records and much more. The accessioned records may range from one single item to a collection of many tens of documents. All are worthy of interest.

The prefixes D./M./T. or 999 or 900/1000 have ceased to be used by the National Archives and all accessions – whether large or small – are now given the year of acquisition as part of the accession reference.

No accessions with the prefix 999 have been included in this listing as lists of these collections will be found elsewhere on this site under the heading “Records Acquired from Private Sources” under “Small Private Accessions”.

Record accessions with the prefix 900 or 1000 are included in this listing up to accession 1119. Accessions from 1120 onwards will be found elsewhere on this site under the heading “Records Acquired from Private Sources” under “Private Sources 1980–2002”.

Furthermore, no accessions from the Representative Church Body of the Church of Ireland or records of Government Departments are included in these lists of accessions.

Information on the Testamentary (T. numbers) collections will shortly be up- loaded on this site. Extended information on wills, grants of probate and grants of administration will be listed fully on the site.

The accessions which are listed here are only those accessions which are available for public consultation. Accessions which are not available to the public have not been included. The reference number of the accession is to be found at the end of each entry – eg (M. 1000) or (989).

While the format of this listing might appear strange, the collections are listed here in the alphabetical order in which they were received in this office. For reasons of confidentiality, the names of the donors have been removed except in the cases of solicitors’ offices or other large corporations. Many of the donation were received anonymously.

It is hoped that all users of this finding aid will finding something of interest in it. Paper print-outs of this finding aid are to be found on the public shelves in the Niall McCarthy Reading Room of the National Archives. The records themselves are easily accessible.
