Chulpan Khamatova

Chulpan Nailevna Khamatova is a Russian film, theater and TV actress of Tatar origin. Described as a “quiet knight” she has become "the face of Russian charity" in recent years. Khamatova first became involved in charity work several years ago when the deputy director of the Children’s He- matology, Cancer, and Immunology Centre appealed to her for help. The centre’s small leukemia patients were in urgent need of a new www.podari-zhizn.ru machine to irradiate donors’ blood. In response Khamatova and other actors from the Sovremennik staged two benefit performances, and raised the money. At that point Khamatova might have decided she had done enough and moved on. But, she says: “I had already fallen in love with those people.” That is how Grant Life, a foundation to help children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, came into being. Today it is one of Russia’s most successful fundraising operations. Last year Grant Life raised nearly $7m, 57pc of which came from individuals. She describes her life as being completely intertwined with her charity work and the children as her family. “From the doctors and the children. And from the realisation that my work may cure a child or may help doctors who can help a child… This is an integral part of my life. Forever.” The musicians

www.nelsonmandelachildrensfund.com Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital

Their Vision A state-of-the art specialists paediatric academic and tertiary referral hospital providing child-centred best quality medical services to the children of Southern Africa, irrespective of their social and economic status.

Health Care for Children in Africa Currently, there are only three dedicated children's hospitals in Africa - one in Egypt, one in Kenya and one in Cape Town, South Africa, serving a population 741 million. This, in comparison with 19 children's hospitals in Australia, 20 in Germany and 23 in Canada. The Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town tends to mainly serve the children of the Western Cape and surrounding regions whilst the bulk of the child population reside in the Eastern Cape, Kwazulu Natal and Gauteng provinces. All levels of paediatric care in Southern Africa are currently overwhelmed by the demand for services. The increase in government spending of primary and secondary health care has, in some cases, resulted in a reduction in budgetary allocations for tertiary and quaternary care. This increase in spending at primary level has seen an increase in the number of referrals up to secondary and tertiary levels resulting in long waiting periods at times. Child Health as a Human Right Children have a right to be cared for and receive medical treatment. This treatment should be in an environment that is safe and caring. The statistics in Africa, however, tell a sad tale with 394 million children in Sub-Saharan Africa living in poverty, the mortality rate in the same region is currently 157 per 1000 live births. In the words of Mr Nelson Mandela "a specialist dedicated children's hospital will be a credible demonstration of the commitment of African leaders to place the rights of children at the forefront - nothing less would be enough." www.nelsonmandelachildrenshospital.org 21st Century Leaders Girls Scholarship Fund

• Combat degradation and over-exploitation of their own environment; • Understand and communicate with people outside of their own communities; • Improve their livelihoods and support local communities towards sustainable long term economic growth and natural resource management and use. FLOC – For the Love Of Children. Located in the basement of a church in Pritchard Street, Central Johannesburg, this project has been running since 1989. It was created to provide pre-primary education to ensure firm grounding and a solid foundation for learning in young children, aged between three months and six years. There are 89 children, 35 of whom are from homeless, refugee or unemployed communities in the inner city of Johannesburg. Many of these children’s parents have come to Johannesburg seeking employment, but the reality is that finding jobs in the city is much harder than they anticipated. Maize Meal and Soya broth are provided to FLOC to provide morning porridge, a warm lunch and afternoon snacks for the children, many of whom would otherwise not receive any meals for the day.

Twilight Children – Hillbrow. This project was established to provide support to children who, for various reasons, are living on the streets within the inner city area of Johannesburg, without any adult or family support. We supply the maize that is cooked and distributed during lunch time at the project. Homeless people of all ages receive a warm meal, basic medical treatment and whatever social services that the project can offer to assist with. “It’s time for new hands to lift the burdens” Nelson Mandela
