We have received several interesting letters this month raising issues that may concern many of you. These include hazards for horse riders and walkers in and about our villages and the surrounding countryside.

The Surgery Development Group have also sent an article for inclusion. I know many of us use the surgery at Netheravon and it is a great worry that the present surgery is under threat.

The Fittleton Companion Dog Show will take place on 2 nd June so good luck to all the entrants and their owners. I do hope the weather is fine but not too hot for our canine friends.

Chisenbury Manor is once again opening the grounds for an afternoon with and cakes. An opportunity not to b missed!

The Chisenbury and Enford Show is almost here and once more there is a reminder of the events and competitions.

2 ENFORD NEWSLETTER JUNE 2007 The Red Lion Football Club Update

With the final league game to be played, the team were in high spirits after our thrilling cup victory. We decided to all change positions to try and get a feel for what each of us normally does. So our strikers went into defence, our keeper went to midfield, our defenders went to attack etc, etc. With such a strange looking starting eleven, we kicked off. To be fair we were playing rather well regardless of our changed positions and it wasn’t long before we took the lead with an excellent volley from Nick Carnell inside their 18yd box. Ten minutes later Dave got our second goal after his initial shot rebounded back to him off the post and he tapped the ball in on the line. Just before half time the ref awarded a dubious penalty to them which they converted. Half time and all change again. We reverted back to our normal playing positions and everyone agreed ‘it’s not always as easy as it looks’. The second half started and we cemented our lead with a third goal. It came from an unexpected source and those of you who have watched us play before will understand me. DAN WILLLIAMS our esteemed left back who has been threatening all season, popped up a good twenty yards out from their goal and managed a looping shot into the top left hand corner. FANTASTIC!!!! I was concerned for his safety as every one of the team jumped on him in celebration. Eventually a bemused Dan emerged from underneath them grinning from ear to ear. Unfortunately for Simon, he had a bet with Dan that if he scored he would buy him lunch! Simon was convinced that someone with two left feet would never score. Well done to Dan for leaving it till the last half of the last game of the season to prove him wrong.! Another goal finally ended their chances and we played a passing game until the final whistle. Three more points in the bag but more importantly we enjoyed ourselves not only in this game but throughout the whole season. We can’t complain with our first year; finished about mid table and holders of the Fair Play Cup.

Here’s looking forward to next season….

THE RED LION TREASURE HUNT

A big, big thank you to all of you who came along on the 29 th April and supported our treasure hunt. We had people travel from afar such as Bristol, London, The New Forest and even Leicester to come and take part. Fun was had by all who participated and £160.00 was raised for The Red Lion FC. Congratulations must go to PK and Neil for their brilliantly devised route which took us around Wiltshire visiting many places off the beaten track. The questions and clues were both fun and well researched which ensured a great afternoon of entertainment.

On behalf of everyone at the RLC thank you.

3 ENFORD NEWSLETTER JUNE 2007 DANGER ON OUR BRIDLEWAYS – HORSE RIDERS BEWARE

During the afternoon of Sunday 6 May 2007, I was riding alone on the Eastern Area of , following the route of a Public Bridleway as marked on the Ordnance Survey map. I have previously travelled the length of this Bridleway on foot, which crosses open fields, and in the area of this incident, three tracks in close proximity to each other. My horse walked across the first track, and down the slight incline to continue on the grassed area. As we did so, my horse suddenly lunged forward for a further two to three paces, spun extremely sharply through one hundred and eighty degrees, and very unceremoniously dumped me on the ground, thus enabling me to examine the sky above. That done, my horse very fortunately stood perfectly still. What had caused him to do this? On checking, I discovered a length of ‘Electric Stock Wire’, (as used to contain cattle), wrapped around one of his hind legs. I removed the wire, and as there were no visible signs of injury, led him the remaining thirty to forty yards along the line of the Bridleway towards the next track crossing. However, a few feet before reaching that second track, my horse sensed something lying in the grass, which upon checking, I discovered to be a second length of ‘Electrical Stock Wire’, entangled with a short length of rusty barbed wire. Naturally, my horse was extremely reluctant to cross this. It should be noted that at this particular track crossing, the Bridleway is clearly sign posted in both directions, so no excuse for not knowing of its existence. Other than being a little ‘spooky’ after his ordeal, my horse appeared to be uninjured; therefore I remounted, but instead of continuing along the Bridleway, turned along the track and headed for home. The following day, I returned to the scene, but without horse. I discovered that what my horse had become entangled with, and then been reluctant to cross when reaching the second track, was a single piece of ‘Electrical Stock Wire’, lying on, and partially concealed by new grass. This single piece of wire circumnavigated a triangular area of land on which there was evidence of having been recently grazed by cattle. A single plastic fence post was located at one corner of the triangle. Crossing the track by the Bridleway signpost, and continuing on to the third track, I discovered a repeat of the first situation with regard to the ‘Electrical Stock Wire’. I noted that both pieces of wire had previously been broken in several places, but rejoined by knotting. Therefore, in order to clear this potentially dangerous obstruction, I untied these to clear the wire from this Public Bridleway at each of the four crossings. Continuing over the third track, the Bridleway has been ploughed, incorporated as part of the field, and crops sown. (Another Obstruction) I fully accept the potential dangers of many sports/activities, and had I simply been riding across areas of open fields, I would not be surprised to encounter various problems, and as such, would expect to accept the consequences. However, I would not expect to find hidden and potentially dangerous obstructions to be carelessly discarded across a Public Right Of Way. On this occasion, my horse and I were lucky. As mentioned previously, my horse, with wire around his leg, stood still after dumping me. Had be attempted to run, he would undoubtedly have sustained some very serious injuries. As for me, a few bruises to the back and arm, and as the rear of my head struck the ground rather sharply, the cost of a new helmet.

ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH ENFORD Dear Friends

If we are fortunate enough to own an animal from its early few moments, it is fascinating to watch it in front of a mirror, pawing at it, trying to get behind to reach the other being. While a baby will gaze mesmerised by what it sees. According to a French psychologist, Jacques Lacan, a baby’s first focussed look in the mirror is a very important stage in its development. Up to that point the baby has no real sense of being an individual, having a body separate from its mother. Suddenly the baby recognises its own outline and identifies itself. It is a moment both exhilarating and terrifying; a moment from which there is no turning back. As the baby looks at its own reflection, it will be propped up by its mother or father. Soon the child will have to stand on its own two feet. It is this insight, albeit a babyish one, which makes it so frightening. As a baby we all have to go though this. We also know that the sight of ourselves is pretty terrifying first thing in the morning especially after a good party! But we have grown up now, the edges have been knocked off us. W are used to thinking as individuals. We are independent. We need to think of ourselves in order to function as human beings. As the poet John Donne said, ’No man is an island, entire of itself. Every man is a piece of the continent.’ What if we were connected to everything and everyone around us? What if the power of the Almighty were there to fizzle through us and there were no limits to the greatness of the works we did – not alone but as part of a greater whole? For one thing it would make sense of love if everything was part of us and we were part of everything. For another, our potential would be infinite and it would be just as terrifying and exhilarating as our first look in the mirror. How thrilling this would be if the Church could realise its true potential. Colin Fox

ENFORD SCHOOL

We offer our congratulations to the three boys who had very good passes in the National Cycling Proficiency Taken From Test, which they took on 27 th April. Well done Paul The Enford Newsletter Turner, Michael Brend and Colin James! Two other June 1967 boys narrowly missed the pass mark and will be required to take one section again. Sgt Lester and PC Vallis praised all the boys for the good condition and obviously careful maintenance of the cycles. Mr Hurry, (RDC Road Safety Organiser) will forward the certificates in due course. During a radio broadcast lesson on 10 th May, some recordings of bird songs were heard. We were not the only listeners on the sports field. When the radio produced blackbird songs, a real one outside our open window copied the radio bird for the whole of his repertoire. During the same programme Mr Armstrong asked if children had ever seen a cuckoo. Sure enough while playing cricket in the dinner hour we saw one flying right across the field making his (or her) familiar cry. We heard during the same lesson that many birds eat their own weight of food in a day. It cannot yet be confirmed that any pupil has successfully emulated this. It has come to our notice that the date chosen for our School Sports, July 8 th , clashes with Durrington School Sports. Our Sports Day will now be on July 15 th instead of the 8 th .

8 ENFORD NEWSLETTER JUNE 2007

The Newsletter Committee received this letter in response to Colin Fox’s (our Vicar) letter in last month’s edition. Dear Colin, I refer to your letter published in the Newsletter with regard to using the Church as a ‘Village Hall’, etc. I was approached by Radio Wiltshire on the day Sir Roy Strong’s views were made known about burning pews from churches as they know I have an opinion on this subject and I spoke on the radio. The church is a place of worship for those who wish to do so.You will get no more people coming to church by moving pews. People who want to come to church will come if they wish to do so. As I said on the radio, the word ’respect’ has disappeared in every way. People, villagers, whatever, do not attend ‘dos’ in church. Coffee mornings, bazaars etc., are attended by the same people all the time, i.e. the Congregation. Events could be held in the village halls and proceeds shared with the church or churches. It seems children are encouraged to run around churches and it becomes a playground and chairs are very movable, not like a fixed pew. Obviously Netheravon church has large numbers as it involves six churches at one service. I would not take Communion at a table brought down into the church. The Altar is the Alter as the Church is a place of worship and peace and quiet with an organ for the music. My opinion will make no difference. I’m sure but you did ask for comments. Village Halls are just as important as churches and should be used for all ‘village events’ as we all contribute to this facility. Yours sincerely Doreen (Fay)

CHISENBURY COURT AREA

WALKERS/DOG WALKERS During the latter part of 2006, early 2007, considerable work was undertaken by Esther Daly, Rights of Way Warden, Wiltshire County Council, and her team of contractors to clear a considerable amount of weed, bushes and trees from Enford Bridleway No 1, which runs in a northerly direction from its junction with the C32 road at Chisenbury Court, East Chisenbury. This route can now be used for horse riding and walking. The work undertaken has been greatly appreciated by many, but opening this Bridleway appears to have created a problem involving walkers/dog walkers. On Tuesday 24 April 2007, whilst checking this Bridleway, I was approached by a Chisenbury Court resident who told me of instances of dog walkers from other parts of Enford Parish, driving to, and parking in the grounds of Chisenbury Court. Dogs have been seen to be allowed to run free from owners ’ vehicles, and in some cases, defecate on the grassed area at the front of Chisenbury Court, prior to entering the Bridleway. This dog mess is often not cleared away, and evidence of this was seen by myself. However, it is obviously impossible to say if this was from a resident or visiting animal. Having checked with The Animal Welfare Officer of Kennet District Council, I can confirm that under The Clean Neighbourhood Act 2005, an offender may be prosecuted for failing to clean up after their dog, which then involves a Court appearance, and risk a fine of up to £1000. So the message is simple, bag it and take it home. (An article regarding this will be published separately). That brings me to the second point. The driveway, parking area, and the entire grassed area of the Chisenbury Court Complex, the outer perimeter of which is the C32 road and Bridleway, is PRIVATE PROPERTY , owned jointly by the residents of Chisenbury Court. It is obviously not the intention to discourage people from enjoying a walk in this area, with or without their dogs but I am sure that as Parish residents, you would all complain if someone parked in your driveway and left their vehicle whilst they went for a walk! Please respect the privacy and property of the Chisenbury Court Residents.

CHISENBURY COURT BRIDLEWAY.

Bridleways are for the use of walkers, horse riders, and horse drawn vehicles only. It is also unlawful, as pointed out in another article, to cause an obstruction on any Public Right Of Way. After walking approximately fifty yards along this Bridleway from its beginning at the C32 road, and on both sides of the Bridleway, there is evidence of garden shrubs, hedge and bush cuttings, together with grass turfs being discarded. This is waste material which should be either composted or taken to one of the local recycling centres at Everleigh, Boscombe Down or Salisbury. Don ’t just dump it, as your mess, which is unpleasant for other people to see, and in this case, beginning to cause a partial obstruction of the Bridleway, will need to be cleared away by other people. Such activity may also be regarded as ‘Fly Tipping ’. (Also an offence).
