Australian Journal of Adult Learning Volume 52, Number 3, November 2012 A critical race and class analysis of learning in the organic farming movement Catherine Etmanski Royal Roads University, Canada The purpose of this paper is to add to a growing body of literature that critiques the whiteness of the organic farming movement and analyse potential ramifications of this if farmers are to be understood as educators. Given that farmers do not necessarily self-identify as educators, it is important to understand that in raising this critique, this paper is as much a challenge the author is extending to herself and other educators interested in food sovereignty as it is to members of the organic farming movement. This paper draws from the author’s personal experiences and interest in the small-scale organic farming movement. It provides a brief overview of this movement, which is followed by a discussion of anti-racist food scholarship that critically assesses the inequities and inconsistencies that have developed as a result of hegemonic whiteness within the movement. It then demonstrates how a movement of Indigenous food sovereignty is emerging parallel to the organic farming movement and how food sovereignty is directly Catherine Etmanski 485 related to empowerment through the reclamation of cultural, spiritual, and linguistic practices. Finally, it discusses the potential benefits of adult educators interested in the organic farming movement linking their efforts to a broader framework of food sovereignty, especially through learning to become better allies with Indigenous populations in different parts of the world. Local Utopia as Unobtrusive Resistance: The Greek Village Micro-Economy Marina Karides Florida Atlantic University [email protected] In late 2008 Athenian youths, triggered by extreme police violence, took to the streets with collective and intensive protests against the growing poverty, unemployment, and political corruption in Greece. The subsequent, regular protests in urban Greece speak not only to the rejection of Greek governance but also to the political and economic promise of the Euro-zone falsely promoted as a boon for its periphery. The oft-reiterated headline “Athens is burning” is varyingly used by left and right media reporting on Greece and its population’s fierce dissent. Yet Greece is not Athens. While half the nation’s population lives in urban centers such as Athens, Thessaloniki, and Patra, the other lives in small agricultural villages often mixed with low-key tourism. It is these small independent and diverse communities, or “meta-industrial populations” (Salleh), in which local agriculture literally feeds the immediate population and its tourists, offering a modest blueprint for a convivial economy. In this Symposium Ariel Salleh highlights the foundations of real ecological sustainability in the work of peasants, women, and Indigenous communities versus the commodification of a green economy. In Greece and its villages, it is not only the historical practices of environmental sustainability – a hallmark of island populations – that is to be showcased, but also an economic culture oriented towards sharing, generosity, and negotiation that is characteristic of many non-core communities. Analyses of the Greek economy are inconclusive; conservative commentators focus on political clientelism, a bloated state sector, migration and the informal economy. -

Provide an opportunity to learn about the lifestyle and conditions of the biological farmer who lives from his/her agricultural activities. Offer timely assistance to farmers and any person who engages in an ecological project. Discover the know-how and skills, and the cultivation and commercial methods of organic farmers who produce healthy food for a local population. Raise awareness of the value and importance of food in our lives. Promote a philosophy of solidarity, mutual assistance and non-monetary exchanges. Offer opportunities to experience a way of life in ecological balance and conscientious of a respectful ecological footprint. Provide an opportunity to discover the ‘real’ Belgium to people from around the world. 2. A HOST Their profile The profile of a host is very varied: an organic farmer, an individual maintaining her/his organic garden, or undertaking an eco-construction project, a craftsperson ... What is common to all is the desire to share and transmit knowledge (over agriculture and organic gardening, different philosophies such as agro-ecology, permaculture, biodynamics, eco- construction…). In addition, a host likes to share his/her lifestyle (everyday ecological practices, family and neighbourhood ties, projects for the future). Shifting the Peak Oil “Debate” to Strategic Management Sally Odland March 2007 It’s time to initiate a real public discourse on the Peak Oil “debate” from a management perspective. On the one side, there are the “Peak Oilers”, urgently warning that world oil production will soon hit its maximum, if it hasn’t already. Many predict dire ramifications for the economy and our current way of life. They are a disparate band, but include some prominent businessmen, members of Congress and the Intelligence community. On the other side, a number of government agencies, oil company CEOs, energy consultants and economists are publicly assuring us there is plenty of oil. They say production will not peak until at least 2030, maybe later…assuming we get access to politically and environmentally extreme areas and invest enough. Each side fires predictable volleys from well-entrenched positions. One side clearly has more corporate clout and better access to the mainstream media. The other uses the internet with the tenacity of resistance fighters. But bottom line, everyone is speculating. There’s a conspicuous lack of verifiable data about how much oil is really out there and who has the capacity to produce more. How can ordinary people and businesses decide whom to believe, much less whether to act, in the face of such polarized viewpoints? Out here in daily life, managers – and by that I mean anyone who makes conscious resource allocation decisions for themselves or others – frequently must take action in the face of incomplete and contradictory information. So, instead of arguing about who has correctly predicted the exact date for peak oil, how about shifting the debate? Let’s examine the spectrum of possibilities, the assumptions underlying them, and their probability, uncertainty and risk. -

Our value system promotes economic gain over environmental health. We are taking more than we are giving back, stretching beyond the limits of sustainability. Earth cannot sustain the current human lifestyle under these conditions. This is paired with the fact that the current system of education focuses on producing economically productive individuals instead of environmentally and socially aware persons who carefully consider the impacts of their actions. This study examines the capacity for “ecological living” to use outdoor education as a tool for changing the present human way of life. Thirty three ecological farms responded to a questionnaire examining the importance each placed on current vs. alternative values. The respondents also answered questions displaying the relationship between life on their farms and the key components of outdoor education.
