In the late 1930s, Doris Duke built "Shangri La," her Honolulu home, on five acres of property overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Diamond Head. Shangri La incorporates architectural features from the Islamic world and houses Duke’s extensive collection of Islamic art, which she assembled for nearly 60 years.

One of Hawaii’s most architecturally significant houses, Shangri La was also the most private of homes, a retreat and sanctuary for a woman who greatly valued her privacy. In her will, Duke set in motion plans to open Shangri La to the public as a place for the study of Islamic art and culture.

Today, Shangri La is open for guided, small group tours and educational programs. In partnership with the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art – which owns and supports Shangri La – the Honolulu Academy of Arts serves as the orientation center for Shangri La tours. Note: Doris Duke Foundation Web page may be viewed at http://www.shangrilahawaii.org

Tour departs from Hilton Tapa Bus Depot at 2:15pm.

SITE TOUR 7 HONOLULU DESIGN CENTER Friday, October 10, 2:15pm – 4:45 pm, 2.0 AIA CES LU FEE: $25.00

RIM Architects (Hawaii) would like to invite you on a fun tour of the Honolulu Design Center (HDC). This award-winning project is a showcase of modernistic architecture that picks up the subtle curves of the surrounding buildings while incorporating cutting edges that reflect the retail within. Clad in bold materials and colors – the orange pearlescent paint was custom-created for this project and named “Honolulu Red”. The architectural design has two intersecting forms – a solid (the “initial” orange wave) and a void (the “reflected” curtain wall wave) articulated in two stories and three stories. This retail experience is enhanced with the “Stage” fine-dining restaurant, café “Crema”, a self-serve wine bar called “Amuse”, an Ice Bar, and the 150 seat “Cupola”. HDC is an invigorating addition to the neighborhood.

Come join us and learn more about our design process and client relationship with the owner, Thomas Sorensen. You will definitely enjoy visiting HDC and the fun atmosphere of this landmark design center.

SITE TOUR 8 PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH – LEED OFFICE PROJECTS Saturday, October 11, 9:00am – 11:30am (Post-conference) FEE: $25.00

This is a two-part tour: First stop is the AIA Honolulu Office in downtown Honolulu. This is one of the first national projects to be awarded LEED CI Gold and the First LEED Project in Hawaii. This project was awarded a sustainability award of merit in 2003 by AIA Honolulu.

The second stop is the 40 South School Street building which was built in 1963. The new owners, who are principals at two local design firms, chose to reuse the existing building. As a living example of the work they do, the building was renovated to be sustainable with the goal of becoming LEED certified. The building was designed to serve as a tool for teaching the public, as well as its occupants about environmentally responsible building practices. It demonstrates that green design can be energy efficient while still being attractive. This project won an AIA Honolulu Award of Excellence in 2008, and was voted the 2008 Member's Choice Award by AIA Honolulu members.
