Setting for women's voices (SSAA) !e Pankhur" An#em

'After a long-fought battle, with the 1918 Representation of the People’s Act, some women finally won the right to the parliamentary vote in Britain. One hundred years later, we celebrate, echoing ’s words from her famous speech delivered in 1913 at Hertford, Connecticut, USA. The landmark Act was but a partial victory. Women in the UK had to wait another ten years for equal rights at the ballot box and women everywhere are still fighting personal and collective battles for . We are getting closer though, and this anthem is for us, as we continue the march. It is for us - for today.’ Helen Pankhurst December 2017

The Pankhurst Anthem is free for anyone to download, print and perform in any setting. We would be grateful if ensembles could acknowledge composer Lucy Pankhurst, writer Helen Pankhurst and BBC Radio 3 in concert performances and programmes.

If you are planning to sing The Pankhurst Anthem in 2018, BBC Radio 3 wants to hear from you! Tweet @BBCRadio3 or email [email protected] with your comments, photos and links to recordings on social media. Biograpie

Dr Helen Pankhurst is a women’s rights activist and senior advisor to the humanitarian and development agency CARE International, a Board member of ActionAid, and a Visiting Professor at the LSE and at Manchester Metropolitan University. She works partly in Ethiopia supporting the development of programs focused on the interests and needs of women and girls. In the UK, she is a public speaker and writer on feminist issues. Helen is the great-granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst. @HelenPankhurst

Lucy Pankhurst is a contemporary composer from the Northwest of England. In 2011, she became the first female composer to win a British Composer Award in the Brass and Wind Band category. Her featured work, In Pitch Black was also the first brass band work to receive a BCA and, in subsequent years, Lucy has been invited to be part of the judging panel for this group. Other accolades include the John Golland Award and the New Music Award at the 2007 US Open Brass Band Championships in Chicago. She has been commissioned by events such as the Ageas International Salisbury Arts Festival, the Durham International Brass Arts Festival and the International Womens’ Brass Conference in Philadelphia, USA, where she was a 2017 featured artist. Lucy is currently in the final stages of her PhD research at the RNCM in Manchester. She also lectures at Huddersfield University and regularly delivers music education projects. @lucyloupank Performance Note

The Pankhurst Anthem is comprised of two main sections. Echoes of Emmeline is a reflective and emotive introduction, setting Emmeline Pankhurst’s words in a recitative- like manner, to give as much space and emphasis for the words as possible.

The Anthem itself is much more strident and positive. There is also a ‘treble melody’ option for younger singers to join in - to include the ‘voices of tomorrow’ with the more contemporary sentiment.

During the transition section from letter C, the soprano and second alto parts ask for short fragments of text to be whispered beneath the first alto solos. These should be ‘stage whispers’, performed ad. lib. using the indicated text; with words overlapping, changes in dynamics and speed at each performer’s discretion. Although the alto melody should remain prominent, it is also important that the whispers are audible.

The Anthem also has an optional ‘treble melody’ part for younger singers to be able to join in with the performance.

Lucy Pankhurst December 2017 1. Echoe of Emmeline

Government does not rest on force It rests upon consent If women consent They can be unjustly governed But, no power on earth can lead a human, however feeble Who withholds his or her consent. Power commands much attention Those with no power are ignored

REFRAIN: I hear the sound of feet Perpetually beating The pounding of our hearts as we march on through the streets A sisterhood of sacrifices made along the way But now we stand Today

If we win this hardest of fights To be sure, the future will be made easier For women all over the world To win the fight when their time comes

REFRAIN:

A voice, a choice, the right to live To tell our story with what we have to give So listen, tho’ you may feel alone This is the sound of those that follow you

I hear the sound of feet Perpetually beating The pounding of our hearts as we march on through the streets A sisterhood of sacrifices made along the way But now we stand! We sing! We rise! Today!
