April 15, 2019 Dear Members of the Media, On behalf of the Boston Athletic Association, principal sponsor John Hancock, and all of our sponsors and supporters, we welcome you to the City of Boston and the 123rd running of the Boston Marathon. As the oldest annually contested marathon in the world, the Boston Marathon represents more than a 26.2-mile footrace. The roads from Hopkinton to Boston have served as a beacon for well over a century, bringing those from all backgrounds together to celebrate the pursuit of athletic excellence. From our early beginnings in 1897 through this year’s 123rd running, the Boston Marathon has been an annual tradition that is on full display every April near and far. We hope that all will be able to savor the spirit of the Boston Marathon, regardless whether you are an athlete or volunteer, spectator or member of the media. Race week will surely not disappoint. The race towards Boylston Street will continue to showcase some of the world’s best athletes. Fronting the charge on Marathon Monday will be a quartet of defending champions who persevered through some of the harshest weather conditions in race history twelve months ago. Desiree Linden, the determined and resilient American who snapped a 33-year USA winless streak in the women’s open division, returns with hopes of keeping her crown. Linden has said that last year’s race was the culmination of more than a decade of trying to tame the beast of Boston – a race course that rewards those who are both patient and daring.

To have them come back to defend their titles sets the stage for another year of sensational racing in Chicago.” Kenya’s Jeptoo ran her first career sub-2:20 marathon in Chicago last year with a time of 2:19:57, the fastest women’s marathon time of 2013. Continuing strong, she opened her 2014 marathon campaign in Boston with a forceful 2:18:57, smashing the previous course record by almost two minutes and setting a new personal best. Jeptoo arrives in Chicago with the potential to rewrite the record books by becoming the third woman in history to run three sub-2:20 marathons. The running world has not witnessed this feat in more than a decade since former Chicago champions and World Record holders Catherine Ndereba (KEN) and Paula Radcliffe (GBR) traded course and world records in London and Chicago.

Volume 11, No.61 October 08, 2012 — Chicago Marathon: 2 Ethiopian Wins — by Sean Hartnett deep international fields, but amid summer- peratures in the low 40s Tsegaye Kebede led Chicago, Illinois; October 7—For most like swelter that depressed times on a course Feyisa Lilesa under 2:05 and Dathan Ritzen- of the past five years, rather than being re- long regarded as the fastest in America, they hein ran 2:07:47 to become the No. 3 Ameri- can ever. SEAN HARTNETT The race was slow to warm up as a large pack huddled together through the opening 13K northward tack into a light but chilly wind covered in 38:58 (2:06:29 pace). Ritz ran 50 meters off the back, drafting behind the large frame of high school teammate Jason Hartman. The pace picked up a bit heading back into The Loop, splitting 62:54 at halfway and 1:14:34 (2:05:51) pace at 25K when the pacers retired. Kebede immediately went to the front and the little big man of the marathon world lifted the pace higher and higher. “I could see that the pace was slow,” Kebede observed, “so I kept pushing and pushing and could see that the time was dropping from 2:05 to 2:04 and I could hear that not many athletes were follow- ing.” For good reason, as Kebede’s constant assault was evident in a 28:47 split over the ensuing 10K that left only Lilesa and esteemed debutants Tilahun Regassa and Sammy Kitwara in contention. Kebede continued to push and finally broke free of Lilesa a kilometer from the finish as he charged home in a record 2:04:38 for a North American course.
