Show your thanks to our medical teams this Christmas 3 The Humpty Dumpty Foundation is celebrating more than 30 years of helping to save the lives of sick and injured children in hospital. Our mission is to raise money to provide essential and often life-saving medical equipment.

Our unique Wish List model gives donors complete choice and transparency in their giving. Many choose to support their local hospital or community in this way.

Giving donors the opportunity to see the equipment, meet with medical professionals, and sometimes the families and children that have benefited from their generosity, makes this process unique and truly special.

Humpty’s Wish List has enabled thousands of pieces of medical equipment to be delivered straight to the hospitals who need them — creating tangible and life changing outcomes for Australian families.

To date, Humpty has provided medical equipment to paediatric wards, neonatal units, maternity and emergency departments at... 432HOSPITALS AND HEALTH SERVICES ACROSS .

If you’ve ever been in the horrible situation of needing urgent medical treatment for your child there’s a good chance that equipment donated by Humpty was involved at some point.

ROYAL DARWIN HOSPITAL, NEWBORN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT, NT ISOLETTE 8000 PLUS INCUBATOR Project: $220,000 for the 8 needed

Help us save the lives of hundreds of pre-term and low birth weight infants who are born each year at Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH).

RDH NICU is in urgent need of 8 Isolette 8000 plus Incubators to replace existing equipment which is no longer being manufactured and is unable to be serviced and maintained due to age.

The Northern Territory has the highest rates per population of pre-term and low birth babies born in Australia. In 2019, 360 pre-term/low weight babies were born at RDH.

Social disadvantage and remoteness are big contributors to premature birth in the Northern Territory. Babies born pre-term are not able to regulate their body temperature or prevent water loss from their skin - these problems contribute to the complications they face. The lower the gestational age or weight the higher the risks of death or disability.

In recent years, advances in medical equipment technology has contributed to improved survival rates and reduced the severity of disability for those infants.

Modern isolettes regulate an infant’s temperature by automatically adjusting the humidity levels, creating a cocoon-like environment for the baby, similar to its mother’s womb.

“Together we can save lives of the most vulnerable members of our NT community and close the gap in health equity”.

In far north Queensland the sickest of babies are treated in the Special Care Nursery at Cairns Hospital.

Neonatal ventilation is an important part of the care delivered in the NICU or Special Care Nursery. The aim of any ventilation strategy is to support the premature infant’s respiratory system without damaging the lungs or brain. Those ventilation strategies can be viewed as a continuum of dependencies that accompany the neonate and the caregiver from beginning to the end of respiratory challenges.

The Babylog comes with a new user interface and design which makes it easier and safer for clinicians to operate. The neonatal ventilator supports lung and brain protective ventilation modes throughout the whole respiratory cycle and can be easily integrated in a developmental care- friendly environment. NETS has built a strong partnership with the Humpty NETS sometime during Dumpty Foundation. For example, we needed dedicated their childhood ambulances to accommodate specialised equipment for infants and children, which regular ambulances weren’t designed to carry. Humpty funded five of these ambulances, which now conduct over 65% of all NETS missions. As a country kid I have always been passionate about closing the gap between the access that urban children have to specialised neonatal and paediatric care, and transported NETS compared to their peers in rural and remote areas. One in thirty-eight children in rural NSW will be transported teams and patients by NETS sometime during their childhood and it is very satisfying to know that so many rural children and their 18,582 times families have benefited from the work we do.

Dr. Andrew Berry Andrew was educated in rural and regional NSW. He studied medicine at the and University of Adelaide, qualifying in 1975.

An internship in Broken Hill in 1976 was followed by paediatric training in several metropolitan hospitals. He was awarded his FRACP and by 1982 was Staff Specialist at RAHC and Head of Department of Neonatology from 1985 – 1995. Andrew’s real passion has always been the retrieval of sick infants and children. Andrew did his first retrieval in 1977 and is still conducting retrievals in 2020 – that is 44 years of retrieval!

Children in remote communities that make up Australia’s most vulnerable populations, have some of the highest rates of rheumatic heart disease in the world. Many end up needing open heart surgery, and some do not survive. It’s a modern day, Australian tragedy.
