And that was a great lesson to me and it's one of the reasons why I still live in Sherman Park." Fuller doesn't believe last summer's violence was "a Sherman Park problem" and thinks that other parts of the city have bigger issues than his neighborhood of choice. Paul, she learned about the strength of the human spirit and fragility of human lives. Other lessons were learned through a series of positions in the nonprofit and political worlds throughout the 1980s and '90s. This established Pitre’s desire to help strengthen communities. And these po- sitions allowed her to “break bread” with African-American and Latino community leaders, she says. Her work with organiza- tions such as Planned Parenthood and the AIDS Resource Center provided her with a front row seat to the diversity that, she says, holds our city together. Pitre credits her time with the AIDS Re- source Center of Wisconsin and Fighting Back, Inc., an anti-drug program, as the two jobs that impacted her most. “They lit me on fire,” she says. “Part of who I am is because of those jobs. Seeing AIDS pa- tients literally die in your hands,” she says, cemented her desire to be an advocate. In 2002, she became executive direc- tor of the Task Force on Family Violence.
