SC Braga have never visited before but will face a familiar rival in CFR 1907 Cluj's Portuguese coach Paulo Sérgio. • Paulo Sérgio, who replaced in late October, was once at the helm of Braga's local rivals Vitória SC and has coached three of the visiting team's players. Match background • This is a match of major significance to both teams. A victory for either could put them second in Group H, depending on the Galatasaray AŞ-Manchester United FC result, but equally a defeat would end Braga's hopes and could potentially do the same for CFR. • Braga lost 2-0 at home to CFR on matchday one – their former player, Rafael Bastos, scoring twice – but the Stadionul Dr. Constantin Rădulescu should hold no fears for the Portuguese side given their away form so far in 2012/13. José Peseiro's men drew at Udinese Calcio in the play-offs, then won 2-0 at Galatasaray before losing narrowly at United after leading 2-0. • With their defeats by United and Galatasaray, CFR have won just one of eight home fixtures in the UEFA Champions League proper, against FC Basel 1893 in 2010/11. Team ties • Paulo Sérgio coached FC Paços de Ferreira, Vitória SC and Sporting Clube de Portugal in Portugal's top flight, following spells in the second tier with CD Santa Clara, SC Beira-Mar and SC Olhanense. He knows three Braga players particularly well, having coached Baiano at Paços de Ferreira, Custódio at Guimarães and Nuno André Coelho at Sporting. • Paulo Sérgio's Portuguese Liga coaching debut with Paços de Ferreira brought a 2-0 home loss to Braga in August 2008, Paulo César scoring as a late substitute. Braga also won the return fixture 2-0. Paulo César later found the net against Paulo Sérgio's Sporting team in a 2-1 Braga defeat in Lisbon in January 2011. • Paulo Sérgio had mixed fortunes in the Minho derby against Braga as Vitória SC coach in 2009/10. He enjoyed a 1-0 home win on 7 November 2009 against a Braga side including Mossoró, Hugo Viana, Paulo César and Alan. On 2 April 2010, his team were beaten 3-2 at Braga, with Alan scoring and Guimarães ending with seven players having had three sent off in added time. • Peseiro was in charge of FC Rapid Bucureşti between July 2008 and January 2009, working with Vasile Maftei. He earned a 1-0 home win against CFR in his third league match as Rapid coach. • Beto spent 2011/12 on loan at CFR from FC Porto, making 27 league appearances and winning the Romanian title. His successor at CFR, Mário Felgueiras, was Braga's reserve goalkeeper in 2008/09, playing once alongside Alan as a substitute in a league fixture against Porto. In between loan spells elsewhere, Felgueiras started Braga's two UEFA Champions League qualifying ties against Celtic FC in 2010/11. • Felgueiras was Sporting's third-choice goalkeeper under Peseiro in 2004/05, sharing a dressing room with Custódio and Viana. He also played with Coelho at Portimonense SC in 2007/08 and with Hélder Barbosa in the Portugal team that won the 2003 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. • Diogo Valente made eight league appearances for Braga in 2009/10. He played with Alan at Porto in 2006/07. • CFR's other Braga old boy is Rafael Bastos, who made eight league outings in 2009/10. • CFR's connections with Braga include António 'Toni' Conceição, a former Braga player and assistant coach who held the CFR reins between April and November 2009, winning the Romanian Cup. , Braga coach in 2007, was in charge of the Cluj-Napoca club last season. • Cadú was sent off playing for Boavista FC against Braga in a 0-0 home draw in 2005/06. • Ivo Pinto played with Hélder Barbosa on loan at Vitória FC in 2009/10. He was once a Portugal U21 colleague of Cristiano Pereira. • Five other CFR squad members have played in Portugal: Camora, Rui Pedro, Nicolas Godemèche, László Sepsi and Modou Sougou, taking the total to ten. • Braga's assistant coach Fernando Couto helped Portugal beat Romania 1-0 in the UEFA EURO 2000 group stage.

CFR UEFA Champions League statistics • Matchday four marked coach Paulo Sérgio's first game in the UEFA Champions League. • CFR's 2-0 victory against Braga on matchday one was only the third time a Romanian side had won away from home in the UEFA Champions League group stage, following FC Steaua Bucureşti (4-1 at FC Dynamo Kyiv in 2006) and CFR (2-1 at AS Roma in 2008). • Mário Felgueiras, Ivo Pinto, Cadú and Camora have played every minute of CFR's group stage campaign. • Matías Aguirregaray is available after serving a one-game ban following his red card on matchday three; Rafael Bastos' next booking will incur a suspension. International duty • Aguirregaray made his Uruguay debut last Wednesday, starting the 3-1 victory over Poland in Gdansk. Miscellaneous • Pantelis Kapetanos missed a 94th-minute penalty on Friday as a CFR side shorn of the suspended Gabriel Mureşan and injured László Sepsi – out since matchday four – lost 2-0 at home to FC Astra Ploieşti. • Modou Sougou scored the winner in a 2-1 victory at CS Concordia Chiajna on 11 November, his first domestic goal of the season. His previous four strikes had all come in the UEFA Champions League, qualifying included. • Ioan Andone parted company with the club after matchday three and Paulo Sérgio was unveiled as his successor on 30 October in a deal that runs until the end of the season. Assistant Francisc Dican oversaw two victories out of two as interim boss, including the 2-0 Romanian Cup win at home to FC Botoşani on 31 October. CFR will host FC Dinamo Bucureşti in the quarter-finals at the end of the month. • CFR claimed their biggest win this term in Paulo Sérgio's first game on 3 November, beating FC Braşov 5-0. • There are eight Lusophones in CFR's UEFA Champions League squad: six Portuguese and two Brazilians. • CFR suffered three successive defeats in all competitions in October, their worst sequence since losing four in a row between November 2004 and April 2005. • Already on loan from US Città di Palermo, Aguirregaray last month signed a four-year contract at CFR. • Ciprian Deac (knee ligaments), Adam Vass (broken foot), Bakary Sare (broken leg) and Ronny (ligaments) were left out of CFR's UEFA Champions League squad after picking up injuries in the opening month of the season. Deac (3 November) and Vass (16 November) have returned to action. Braga UEFA Champions League statistics • Braga lost 2-0 to CFR on matchday one despite having 35 shots, 23 on target – more than any other side. • Beto, Custódio and Éder have played every minute of Braga's group stage campaign. • Custódio's next yellow card will incur a suspension. International duty • A club record seven Braga players featured in Portugal's 2-2 friendly draw with Gabon in Libreville last Wednesday: Hélder Barbosa, Custódio, Beto, Rúben Micael, Rúben Amorim, Hugo Viana and Éder. Barbosa made his debut as a 79th-minute replacement for Custódio. • Elderson (Nigeria 3-1 Venezuela, Miami) and Zé Luís (Cape Verde Islands 0-1 Ghana, Lisbon) were also in action. • Zé Luís helped the Cape Verde Islands qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time last month. Miscellaneous • Alan converted his third penalty in four matches on Friday as Braga booked a place in the Portuguese Cup fifth round with a 3-1 win at third-tier FC Pampilhosa. Carlão, back from a thigh injury, made his first appearance since 2 September but similar problems ruled out Paulo Vinicius and Paulo César. • Zé Luis marked his only start for Braga with the opening goal in a 3-1 win at home to former club Gil Vicente FC on 3 November. He scored as a late substitute on Friday.

CFR 1907 Cluj: Paulo Sérgio Date of birth: 19 February 1968 Nationality: Portuguese Playing career: Sporting Club de Portugal, CD Olivais e Moscavide, UD Vilafranquense, CF Os Belenenses, FC Paços de Ferreira, SC Salgueiros, Vitória FC, CD Feirense, CD Santa Clara, Grenoble Foot 38, GD Estoril Praia, SC Olhanense Coaching career: SC Olhanense, CD Santa Clara (twice), SC Beira-Mar, FC Paços de Ferreira, Vitória SC, Sporting Clube de Portugal, Heart of Midlothian FC, CFR 1907 Cluj • A product of the SC Sanjoanense youth system, Paulo Sérgio passed through Sporting's ranks, going on to play up front for a number of smaller clubs as well as Liga sides Os Belenenses, Paços de Ferreira and Vitória Setúbal. • Hung up his boots at Olhanense in 2003, moving straight to the bench and leading the club to promotion to the second division in his first season in charge. • Left in 2006, and twice coached Azores-based Santa Clara either side of a spell as coach of Beira-Mar; stepped up to Liga with Paços de Ferreira in 2008/09, unexpectedly leading the team to the Portuguese Cup final, which they lost 1-0 to FC Porto. • Moved to Guimarães in October 2009, leading the club to sixth place in his only season. Replaced Carlos Carvalhal as Sporting coach in summer 2010 but his side struggled for consistency in the league and he left in February 2011 following elimination from the UEFA Europa League round of 32. • Took over at Hearts that June and, in what proved his only season in charge, guided the Edinburgh club to the Scottish Cup. Succeeded Ioan Andone at CFR in October 2012.

SC Braga: José Peseiro Date of birth: 4 April 1960 Nationality: Portuguese Coaching career: UD Santarém, GUS Montemor, Clube Oriental de Lisboa, CD Nacional, Real Madrid CF (assistant), Sporting Clube de Portugal, Al Hilal SC, Panathinaikos FC, FC Rapid Bucureşti, Saudi Arabia, SC Braga • After a playing career in the minor leagues and a low-key start as a coach, Peseiro made his name at Nacional, taking the Madeira club from the third division to the Portuguese Liga in just three seasons. • Left at the end of 2002/03, being appointed assistant to Carlos Queiroz at Real Madrid for the following campaign. Lasted only one season in Spain, taking charge of Sporting for 2004/05. • Close to glory on two fronts that year with Sporting in contention for the league title until the end of the season and reaching the UEFA Cup final at their Estádio José Alvalade. Lost out to SL Benfica in the championship race, however, a defeat compounded by a 3-1 European loss to PFC CSKA Moskva in front of their own fans. • Left Sporting early the following season and had short spells in Saudi Arabia, Greece and Romania before taking charge of the Saudi Arabian national side, a role he held until 2011. • Returned to Portuguese football with Braga in summer 2012 and was an immediate hit, masterminding victory against Udinese Calcio in the UEFA Champions League play-offs to seal a group stage place for only the second time.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Holders Chelsea FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight last season. • Before this season Barcelona had finished as group winners on 13 occasions, one more than Manchester United and Real Madrid. • Barcelona hold the record for successive wins in the UEFA Champions League proper with nine, between 18 September 2002 and 18 February 2003. RSC Anderlecht's 12 straight defeats (10 December 2003 to 23 November 2005) is also a competition record. • Five teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12). • Fifteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including Villarreal CF, FC Oţelul Galaţi and GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2011/12. • Barcelona scored 20 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, equalling Manchester United's competition record from 1998/99. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid last season. • Only RC Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05) and Maccabi Haifa FC (2009/10) have failed to score in a group stage. • Dinamo Zagreb conceded 22 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, a new record. The previous highest total was 19, shared by MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC (1995/96). • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that same season before Dynamo Kyiv managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, as did Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
