WE REALLY FEEL THIS IS A HIT RECOR PLEASE LISTEN AND ADD IT THIS WEEK! JOHNNY HATES JAll TURN BACK THE CL ON YOUR DESK THIS WEEK! An exclusive HITS interview with GEORGE MICHAEL

George Michael doesn't start an interview the same way he does his concerts. There's no smoke or lasers, no arena-shaking hymnal organ overtures. But there's still The Entrance. First co-manager Michael Lip- pman checks out the suite at the hotel, worrying over an air conditioner that isn't working. Then a walkie -talkie-equipped bodyguard checks the closets and bathrooms and even peers underneath the dresser. When everything is deemed O.K., the star himself enters, preceded by co- manager Rob Kahane, followed by another bodyguard. Sunglasses on, shoulder bag slung to one side, The Boots— the silver-tipped ones made famous in his videos— on his feet, even Michael smirks at the ceremony. "Touring is not very much areal-life situation," the 25-year-old pop star says, settling into an armchair "I don't think I'm connected very much with real life at all right now. When I'm at home in London, Ican live my life pretty much the way Iwant to. And Idon't have bodyguards at all." But even Michael must know he's aman worth protecting. Between 1982-86, he sold more than 38 million records and had three consecutive No.1 hits as the leader of Wham!. Then there's post-Wham!, which makes those figures look modest. "Faith," his solo debut album, has sold more than 15 million copies worldwide and 6.5 million in America. He's also riding astring of six consecutive No.1 singles as well as aSRO world tour Still, Michael has only gotten alimited amount of respect from the critical music press, though that's changing. His image is hampered by his Wham! days, when it was all hot pants and seeming superficiality, but there's more than that to George Michael, and he was anxious to show it during this chat with Hits.

AN OPEN LETTER TO RADIO FROM SUNNY JOE WHITE, PROGRAM DIRECTOR/WXKS

Dear Programmers:

Last Christmas I got a phone call from a kid who called meto make his Christmas wish. The kid sounded so unhappy I had to ask what's the matter. I have never been so disturbed by a phone call. People in the audience heard the phone call and many called to ask what's the matter here with this kid being so depressed at Christmas time.

To think that a listener of ours could be suffering from child abuse had never crossed my mind. We're on the air having fun and it never crossed my milid that a child could be suffering from abuse. It was tough realizing his only real friend and comfort comes from the radio.

The KISS listeners called in to help give this kid his wish for Christmas and I offered the phone number to the 10Cal'child abuse help lines.

10,000 Maniacs' song "What's The Matter Here" sings about child abuse. It might help some kid feel that he's not the only kid being abused and there is help out of an abused situation if he hears the song.

At CHR radio we play a lot of music that carries a fun message. Let's allow the audience to be the decision maker on 10,000 Maniacs. The record is so strong I had to write to all my fellow programmers an ask "What's The Matter Here?"

Sincerely

/ - nny Joe White Progr m Director

NICK MARIA: ATLANTIC RECORDS This NARM dunking booth victim was tough enough to hit the water with a cigarette in his mouth. He's also tough enough to deal with the branches and national accounts as VP Sales of Atlantic. Nick began at WEA in 1971 as a salesman in the NY branch, he then became sales manager before moving to Atlanta as a Regional East Coast Marketing Manager. In 1983 he became National Sales Manager and last December was upped to his current position. On the personal side, he is married with a son Nicholas who just tur- ned three in July and is a major NY Giants football fan (nice January '87, sorry about "LT"). Nick is currently smoking on the product level with INXS, Debbie Gibson. JJ fad, Bad Company and hot new projects from Escape Club. Judson Spence. Winger. Sweet Sensa- tion and, of course, the Buster soundtrack featuring Phil Collins.
