Visitors are not permitted on the floor of the coliseum for photographic or other purposes. You are requested to refrain from loud expressions of pleasure for individual graduates. Such expressions frequently detract from the recognition due the next graduate in line. Your cooperation is respectfully but urgently requested. HONORARY DEGREE BILLY GENE McCALL DOCTOR OF HUMANITIES Clemson alumnus Billy McCall leads the billion dollar Duke Endowment - one of the most prestigious and wealthiest endowments in America - as its Executive Director. Mr. McCall has had a distinguished career in hospital management and in charita- ble foundation administration. His philanthropic career of working with the beneficia- ries of the Duke Endowment underscores the great responsibility in giving away money wisely. He is known as a creative thinker in the foundation field and his knowledge of public health needs and the intricate problems of hospitals is extraordinary. Mr. McCall has been at the helm of the Charlotte, N.C. foundation for almost one year, but he has been with the Duke Endowment for nearly forty years and has played an important role in its accomplishments and those of the health care system in the Carolinas. He has helped the endowment achieve and surpass the hopes and dreams of its benefactor, James Buchanan Duke. The Duke Endowment was established in 1924 to fund advances in health care, child care, education, and religion in the Carolinas. Mr. Duke funded the endowment with an initial $40 million and gave the endowment an additional $67 million in his will. Mr. McCall, born at Ellerbe, N. C., was graduated with high honor from Clemson in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He earned a certificate in hospital admin- istration at Charlotte Memorial Hospital and started his career as assistant administra- tor at Anderson Memorial Hospital. In 1954 he joined the Duke Endowment as a field representative for its Hospital and Child Care Sections. Under his guidance and direction these divisions have been a vital force in creatively and flexibly helping the Carolinas' health care system adapt to a changing environment. The endowment has been a catalyst to improve hospital financial structures and accounting systems, to develop shared services programs, and to increase the availability of health care services. Mr. McCall is dedicated to the health care field and interested in health adminis- tration students, realizing that our future system lies largely in their hands. During his many years with the endowment his concern for people and his pursuit of creative solutions to the health care problems that plague the two states have helped lead innovations in health care delivery that have been emulated throughout the country. Hospitals, as well as other endowment beneficiaries throughout the Carolinas, have gained much from his wisdom and insight. While many foundation officials keep their distance from grant seekers, Mr. McCall chooses to be an involved partner, helping hospital administrators to clarify their needs and package proposals that work. He is a resilient sounding board for hospitals in the Carolinas, listening to requests for a new parking lot, kitchen, or laundry with the same patience and concern he gives to an innovative maternal/child health program. Billy McCall is counted among Clemson's most distinguished alumni, and the University holds him and his achievements in the highest regard. It is a privilege to present to him the honorary degree, Doctor of Humanities. HONORARY DEGREE DAN ROSTENKOWSKI DOCTOR OF LAWS Congressman Dan Rostenkowski's political career began in 1953, when he took oath of office in the Illinois House of Representatives. In 1955, he moved to the Illinois State Senate. Elected as the youngest member of the 86th Congress on November 4, 1958, he has represented the people of the 8th Congressional District of Illinois for three decades. In the course of his career, Dan Rostenkowski has amassed a record of exemplary service to the people of Chicago, the State of Illinois and the Nation. He has held numerous offices within the leadership structure of the Democratic Party and the House of Representatives, including Vice-Chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Chief Deputy Majority Whip of the House of Representatives, Chairman of the Democratic Caucus, and delegate to each Democratic National Con- vention from 1960 to the present. The trust he enjoys from his colleagues crosses political party lines. An example of the bipartisan esteem in which Congressman Rostenkowski is held is his appoint- ment as the Special Representative of the President of the United States to the Poznan International Trade Fair in 1973 for President Nixon, in 1975 for President Ford, in 1977 for President Carter, in 1987 for President Reagan, and in 1989 for President Bush. In 1981, at the beginning of the 97th Congress, Congressman Rostenkowski be- came the Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means, the oldest and one of the most influential committees of the Congress. Throughout its illustrious history, the Committee on Ways and Means has been at the center of the most critical legislative decisions of the Congress. The tenure of Chairman Rostenkowski has been no ex- ception. Chairman Rostenkowski has guided the committee in the development and enact- ment of some of the most significant legislation of the past decade, including the Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982, the Social Security Amendments of 1983, the Deficit Reduction Act of 1984, the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985, the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1986, the Tax Reform Act of 1986, the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987, the Catastrophic Coverage Act of 1988, the Family Support Act of 1988, the Omnibus Trade Act of 1988, and the Omnibus Budget Act of 1990. From 1981 to the present day, Chairman Rostenkowski has led the Committee on Ways and Means in making enormously difficult decisions about the Nation's fiscal policy, social security policy, health and welfare policy, and trade policy. In address- ing all of these issues, Chairman Rostenkowski has worked to forge the bipartisan consensus that is the key to the enactment of sound legislation. While Congressman Rostenkowski's work and accomplishments are identified with our nation's capital, he remains in all ways a citizen of Chicago, living in the neighborhood in which he was raised, in the house that his grandfather built. For all the awards and tributes that he has received, the greatest testimony for his work as a public servant is the trust vested in him by the people of Chicago, who have returned him to the Congress since 1958. Clemson University holds Congressman Rostenkowski, his legislative achieve- ments, and service to the country in the highest regard, and it is a special privilege to honor him with the awarding of this honorary degree. The President's Award

ROBERT HOWELL BROOKS WILLIAM BEAUFORT STURGIS

ROBERT HOWELL BROOKS Thirty-five years ago, Robert Howell Brooks took a chance on Clemson. With a picnic lunch and a fistful of resolve, he set out for the campus from his Loris, South Carolina, home. He had no idea how he was going to pay for college or even how to go about enrolling, but he was determined to earn a college degree. And he did - motivated by his own desire to succeed and encouraged by the help and advice of longtime Dean of Students and now President Emeritus Walter Cox. In the late '60s, Bob Brooks took another big chance. He quit his job, cashed in his savings bond, and started his own company. Today, Eastern Foods, lnc./Naturally Fresh is a multimillion-dollar success story - one "written, produced and directed" by Robert Howell Brooks. Such theatrical references shall long be associated with the Brooks name at Clemson University. On April 5th of this year, ground was broken for the Robert Howell Brooks Center for the Performing Arts, made possible in large part by a $2.5- million commitment by Bob Brooks and his wife, Yvonne. This tremendous gift is but the most recent of Bob Brooks' many services to Clemson. Currently, for example, he is a member of the President's Advisory Council, which helps the University keep pace with the emerging trends and dynamic forces that are shaping the future. Clemson University admires the courage and applauds the accomplishments of Robert Howell Brooks. We are glad he took a chance on Clemson. We proudly present to him The President's Award. WILLIAM BEAUFORT STURGIS If life for most is a well-worn path, then for William Beaufort Sturgis it is a trail to be blazed. His journey to date is distinctive for the giant steps he has taken along the way in service to his profession, his community and his alma mater, Clemson University. Bill Sturgis is vice president of W. R. Grace & Company and president of its Cryovac Division, a worldwide leader in flexible packaging technology. He joined Cryovac just five years after its establishment and, in the thirty years since, has helped build it into a billion-dollar business. In his Greenville, South Carolina, community, beneficiaries of Bi ll Sturgis' volun- teerism and generosity are numerous. They range from the Greenville Children's Hos- pital and the United Way to the Boy Scouts of America and the Peace Center for the Performing Arts. For Clemson, he's done everything from help establish the University's unique packaging science program - the only one in the nation with an emphasis in food packaging - to serve, as he currently does, on the Executive Committee of The Cam- paign for Clemson capital fund drive. Those two interests blended in February, when Cryovac made a $1 .5-million Campaign commitment to endow a Trustees Chair in packaging science - a gift that pushed the Campaign over its original goal of $62 million sixteen months ahead of schedule: William Beaufort Sturgis had taken another giant step for Clemson and for education and economic development in the State of South Carolina. Clemson University is honored to bestow upon him The President's Award. WILSON CANNON WEARN

WILSON CANNON WEARN "The salvation of the local broadcaster is becoming involved in the community," said Wilson Cannon Wearn in 1972, the year the Clemson Alumni Association conferred upon him its highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award. Nineteen years later, he remains committed to that creed. As chairman of the board of Multimedia, Inc., Wilson Wearn of Greenville, South Carolina, headed a public communications company described by the industry publi- cation Broadcasting as "a model of business savvy, whose management team is con- sidered among the best." While rising to the top of Multimedia, of which he is now chairman emeritus, he served the communications industry in numerous volunteer roles, a fact not lost on his colleagues: In 1985, he received the Distinguished Service Award of the National Association of Broadcasters, of which he is a former chairman. His many civic activities encompass a broad range of interests - from the Green- ville Hospital System to the Greenville Symphony Association. His commitment to higher education is reflected by service on the Clemson University Foundation Board of Directors and the Presbyterian College Board of Trustees. While he was its presi- dent, the Clemson University Foundation launched its first capital campaign, which raised $1 .7 million for the Robert Cook Edwards Endowment for Excellence in Science and Technology. Today, as a member of Clemson's Golden Anniversary Class of 1941, he continues to work for the advancement of the University and higher education in South Carolina. In recognition of his professional success and public service, Clemson University is pleased to present The President's Award to Wilson Cannon Wearn. BOARD OF TRUSTEES Louis P. ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS Max Lennon ------· President W. David Maxwell ______Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Hugh J. Clausen ______Vice President for Administration and Secretary of the Board of Trustees Milton B. Wise ______Vice President for Agriculture and Natural Resources David R. Larson ______Vice President for Business and Finance Gary A. Ransdell ______Vice President for Institutional Advancement G. Jay Gogue ------· Vice President for Research Manning N. Lomax ______Vice President for Student Affairs The Academic Procession The Academic procession is composed of the faculty, staff, officers, Trustees, and honored guests of the University. Faculty enter by college and each college is preceded by its mar- shal, a senior faculty member, with the college baton, described under University Regalia. Following the marshal is the college banner bearer. Each banner is a combination of colors that declare the disciplines taught in that college. These colors, which were estab- lished by the American Council on Education, are as follows: College Colors Discipline Agriculture Maize Agriculture Architecture Brown Fine Arts Lilac Architecture Commerce & Industry Copper Economics Drab Business Education Light Blue Education Engineering Orange Engineering Forest & Recreation Russet Forestry Resources Sage Green Recreation Education Liberal Arts Dark Blue Philosophy White Letters & Humanities Cream Social Science Library Lemon Library Nursing Apricot Nursing Sciences Golden Yellow Sciences Staff Purple & Orange Academic Support Collegiate faculty follow their banner in order of academic rank wearing academic cos- tumes of medieval origin. Those who have received their degrees from institutions outside the United States wear costumes specified by the awarding institutions. The academic costumes of faculty whose degrees are from United States' institutions are specified by a uniform code maintained by the American Council on Education. Caps are black and are usually mortar boards with tassels. Doctors of Philosophy wear gold tassels usually of metallic thread; other degrees wear black or discipline colors. The bachelors' gown is simple and black with long, pointed sleeves. Masters' gowns, also black, are longer than bachelors. Older gowns have sleeves that terminate at the elbow while those since 1960 have sleeves extended to the wrist. Doctors' gowns are full, with bell-like sleeves. The front is marked by velvet panels and the sleeves are marked by three velvet bars. While most gowns are black with black velvet, one variation is to replace black velvet with velvet in the discipline color. A second variation is a colored gown usually of the univer- sity's colors. All hoods specify the level of degree, the discipline studied and the awarding institution. First, degree level is signified by the size of the hood with bachelors' smallest, masters' lar- ger, and doctors' quite large and of a different shape. Clemson does not award hoods to bachelors. The width of the velvet trim also conveys the degree. Secondly, the discipline is indicated by the color of the trim edging the hood to form the throat over the gown. Finally, the color of the hood's lining specifies the awarding institution. The colors are displayed in combinations that are drawn from heraldry. Notice that the Clemson University hood is lined with purple through which is an orange chevron (a "V"). Although many combinations are duplicated by dozens of institutions, Clemson is presently the only institution with that reg- istered combination. The officers, trustees, and honored guests wear academic, ecclesiastical, or military re- galia as set forth by their professions. They are preceded by the University marshal. Clad in a gown of office in gold and purple, the marshal wears no hood and bears the University mace. At the ceremony's close, the faculty do not exit as a part of the recessional but are dismissed, along with students and guests, when the marshal leaves the coliseum. The University Regalia The University mace is the symbolic representation of the whole of Clemson University and must be present at any convocation where the University, through its delegated members, is acting officially. At any official convocation such as commencement, the University Marshal, carrying the mace, precedes the Presi- dent into the assembly. The mace rests before the President's chair or speaker's stand throughout the ceremony, and its removal from the assembly at the close of a convocation is symbolic of the official withdrawal of the University and, thus, the close of the proceedings.

The decorative design of Clemson's mace is derived from the ceremonial maces carried by heads of state and church in the Middle Ages. Its basic club- like shape, however, is much more ancient, probably going back to man's pre- history. It is made of walnut wood and silver, with the seal of the University in gold and the University colors represented by insets of carnelian (orange) and amethyst (purple). Amethyst is also the state stone of South Carolina.

The Presidential chain and seal is symbolic of the authority vested in the office of president by the governing body of the University. Only the University President may wear it, and while wearing it he speaks for the whole body of the institution. Clemson's chain and seal are made of silver and gold, and carnelian and amethyst.

The batons of the college marshals also descend from medieval "staffs of office" which were carried by the senior members of departments of state or church. They display the seal of the University and the symbolic color of the discipline to which the college belongs. Clemson's batons are made of walnut wood and silver with the various disciplines inset with enamel.

The University regalia were designed and executed by Mr. Robert Ebendorf. Mr. Ebendorf is twice winner of the Tiffany Award and one of the most acclaimed goldsmiths of our era. The enamel plaques for the batons were executed by the late Professor Marshall C. Bell, and the lapidary work was executed by the late Mr. C. C. Wilson of Clemson University. Coat of Arms

Designed by Clemson University graphic artist, Connie Floyd, the coat of arms represents the historic three-fold mission of this institution: teaching, research and service.

Pictured on the cover, the coat of arms is divided into three parts. The bottom contains a series of open books representing the concept of teaching as the ba- sis of the land-grant university. The white of the books and the purple of the background designate the teach- ing mission of the University as it is achieved through undergraduate and graduate instruction.

The upper portion of the shield contains two sets of calipers and wheat sheaves illustrating the measure- ment system for research, as well as Clemson's tradi- tion in agriculture and Extension. The three symbols - the books, calipers and wheat sheaves - also repre- sent the humanities, technology and science.

The entire shield is joined by a small orange cen- ter shield bearing a white tiger mask symbolizing the abiding spirit of Clemson.

The crest is a gold palmetto tree, which emphasizes Thomas Green Clemson's desire that Clemson become "the people's university" for South Carolinians. It rises from a band of purple, orange, white and gold. The outer pair of colors, purple and gold, are the official colors of the University; the inner pair, orange and white, are Clemson's student colors. C. Inabinet. Historical Statement

Clemson University is named for Thomas Green Clemson (1807-1888), who left the bulk of his estate to the State of South Carolina for the founding of the institution.

Thomas Clemson was born in Philadelphia in 1807 and educated at the Royal School of Mines in (1828-1832). His early profession was that of a mining engineer; but circumstances diverted his interests into politics and the life of a southern planter, and he soon became an enthusiastic advocate of scientific agri- culture. He had a career as a diplomat (charge d'affairs to , 1844-1852) and served as the first Superintendent of Agricultural Affairs in Washington (1860). As a scientist he published numerous articles in the fields of mining, chemistry, and agriculture. His varied activities included his assistance in the founding of the Maryland Agricultural College, his support of the Morrill Act, his leadership in South Carolina after the Civil War, and his part in founding Clemson University.

Thomas Clemson was the son-in-law of South Carolina's John C. Calhoun, a political figure of national importance during the first half of the nineteenth century. Mr. Calhoun's home, Fort Hill, is preserved on the Clemson Campus as a national shrine.

The academic program at Clemson College began in 1893 with an enrollment of 446. The first "college prospectus" announced only two four-year curricula, supplemented by two two-year preparatory courses. Today the University has ten major academic units. These are the College of Agricultural Sciences, the College of Architecture, the College of Commerce and Industry, the College of Education, the College of Engineering, the College of Forest and Recreation Resources, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Nursing, the College of Sciences, and the Graduate School.

The institution is an accredited member of the Southern Association of Col- leges and Schools; various curricula are accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board, National League for Nursing, Society of American Foresters, American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business, Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, and National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Clemson is a land-grant institution. As such, it is engaged not only in its primary academic program, but does extensive research at the main campus and at five agricultural experiment stations located in the State. The University is also heavily committed to a varied program of public service, including the work of agricultural extension which has professional personnel located in each of the State's counties. CLEMSON ALMA MATER A. C. Corcoran, '19 Where the Blue Ridge yawns its greatness, Where the Tigers play; Here the sons of dear old Clemson Reign supreme alway.

Chorus Dear old Clemson, we will triumph And with all our might, That the Tiger's roar may echo O'er the mountain height.

We will dream of great conquests, For our past is grand, And her sons have fought and conquered Every foreign land.

Where the mountains smile in grandeur O'er the hill and dale. Here the Tiger lair is nestling Swept by storm and gale.

We are brothers strong in manhood, For we work and strive; And our alma mater reigneth Ever in our lives.
