The USA and Germany split the first two meetings, the United States winning in Manhattan in 2006 by 97 points before Ger- many won in Bernhausen last year by 13 points. The USA team was selected at the USA Olympic Trials/USATF National Championships held in Eugene, Oregon, June 27 through July 6, with the heptathlon being contested June 27-28. The USA team will be led by OT fifth place fin- isher Elizabeth Roehrig who recently completed her collegiate eligibility with a second place finish at the NCAA national championships after setting a new personal best while winning her second Big 10 Conference title for the University of Minnesota. Two of the six Americans selected for the Thorpe Cup competition, Kasey Hill and Ashley Wilhelm, posted heptathlon personal bests in Eugene. Danielle McNaney and Lela Nelson are part of the USA team for a third time and are the only females to have participated in all three editions of the meet. Lela Nelson set her lifetime best in winning the 2007 Thorpe Cup individual title. Rounding out the USA team will be multi-event veteran Jackie Poulson. Roehrig, Wilhelm, and Poulson all rank in the USA’s 2008 top 10. The German representatives in Manhattan were selected based on their performances at the June 21-22 IAAF Combined Events Challenge in Ratingen. Christine Schulz enters the meet as the lone performer with a 6,000 point per- formance in 2008, having surpassed the threshold at Götzis. Schulz and Katja Keller top the German entries with personal bests of 6199 and 6130, both set in 2005. Only 20- and 21-years of age, Romig Gurbig and Ulrike Hartz are veterans of international competition, having competed in IAAF World Youth and Junior championships and European U-23 champi- onship meets. Maike Goldkühle and Keller have have ranked among Germany’s top 10 heptathletes the past eight years.
