Lincoln University Football vs. Virginia State University Week 5--Howard; Saturday Oct. 2, Washington, D.C. WASHINGTON, D.C. — Reviving one of the greatest rivalries in black-, Lincoln University and Howard University engaged in a physical, passionate game won by Howard, 28-14, holding off a rigorous comeback by the upstart Lions. The 56th meeting between the two institutions marked Lin- coln’s (1-4) first foray against an NCAA Division I Football Champi- onship Series opponent, but the Lions refused to buckle given the greater size of the Bison (1-4). Howard evened the all-time series at 24-24-8 in the first game between the schools since 1960. “This is a very big deal,” Lincoln University president Dr. Ivory V. Nelson said during an in-game interview on BrandywineRadio. com. “This is not just about Lincoln playing a Division I school, but there are a lot of Lincoln alumni in the D.C. area, and a lot of Lin- coln alumni attended Howard and vice versa. For example, former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall received his undergrad- uate degree from Lincoln and his law degree from Howard.” The competitiveness did not disappoint the historic nature Brucelee Sterile recorded 16 tackles en route to CIAA Line- of the meeting. Lincoln University Football vs. Virginia State University Week 7 — Bowie State; Saturday Oct. 16, Bowie, Md. BOWIE, Md. —Bowie State delivered the necessary plays late, ral- lying from a double-digit deficit to defeat the Lincoln University football team, 24-18, at Bulldog Stadium. Rodney Webb’s two-yard touchdown run with 12:56 remaining proved to be the game winner. Lincoln scored the game’s first 12 points before BSU’s (4-4, 4-1 CIAA) defense demonstrated why it is No. 1 in the CIAA, limiting Lin- coln to 207 yards of offense and just 129 yards following LU’s opening score. The game bore an eerie resemblance to last week’s visit to Chow- an as LU led big early but saw the Hawks inch their way back into the game. While coach O.J. Abanishe, in his third season of the resurrection of the football program, repeatedly says that the team does not take solace in moral victories, there is reason for optimism these last few weeks following a display of greater competitiveness. In 2008, LU lost at Bowie State and in 2009, a 51-20 decision went to the Bulldogs.
