5 6 Shady Side Academy is excited to offer a summer camp experience completely unique to the Pittsburgh Camp Ren region – one that allows middle school students to enjoy the qualities of a traditional day camp infused with the hands-on experience of learning about cutting-edge artistic and scientifi c fi elds. Staff Camp Ren Director David Chottiner currently serves as Shady Side Academy’s director of programs and brings seven years experience as program director of Camp White Plain in Haliburton, Ontario. Director of the Art and Music program will be Sarah Rubin, the current executive director of the Hillman Center for Performing Arts, and a veteran of numerous overnight camps, as well as a professional deejay. Matt Brunner will serve as the director of the Science and Technology program, and has taught robotics and rocketry at Shady Side Academy for fi ve years. Cameron Fisher, a Canadian ceramics artist and former camp section head, will serve as head counselor and lead artistic instructor.

For grades K-12, Summer School offerings vary to meet the interests and needs of students. Courses in visual arts, English/language arts, mathematics and science are offered. Class sizes range from six to 14 children, and are assigned by age and ability. Eighty-minute long periods are typically followed by homework assignments of approximately the same length of time. Study halls are scheduled under Overview the guidance of a teacher or librarian, who is available to tutor the student as needed. Students may also choose to enroll in Day Camps or Sports Camps. Head of Summer School Dr. Michael O’Neil is a social studies teacher at Shady Side Academy Middle School and brings more than 30 years experience to the program.

Elementary and Middle Language Arts and Mathematics courses for grades K-8 are structured to meet the needs of the School Courses individual student at both the enrichment and remedial levels.

Course offerings include: • New courses for credit or enrichment: Courses for a full academic year credit meet for six weeks. Courses for a one-term credit typically meet for three weeks. • Review or preview courses for academic strengthening: High School Courses Flexible courses are offered to focus on particular topics and designed to address students’ individual needs and concerns. • Review courses for credit: Review courses for credit may be arranged for students not meeting academic requirements. The concerns of the student receive close attention, with the course pace dictated by the material to be covered. Credit for the purpose of making up a failure has been accepted by public and independent schools. Arrangements for credit transfer should be discussed when registering for Summer School. Shady Side Academy does not assume responsibility for credits not transferring.

Students are given standardized testing at the beginning and end of designated courses. Teachers may require other testing as necessary. Progress reports are issued at the end of the third and sixth weeks, in addition to weekly teacher Tests and Reports reviews. Studio Art One Studio Art One introduces students to the fundamental skills that are necessary to competently 3 units for credit, 6 weeks practice in the visual arts, including drawing and design in a variety of subject matter and media.
