Celebrate Kwanzaa Well, it’s December 29th. We’ve run out of Advent Sundays but we aren’t quite to the new year. I wanted to continue the inter-faith kind of theme we’ve had for December so I was guided to Kwanzaa. Technically, Kwanzaa isn’t faith based but it is culture based. So what culture and why do we have Kwanzaa, what does it mean and why should anyone at Unity of Lehigh Valley care about it? You know how I keep talking about how the Universe contributes to my sermons? Well, when the Universe stops contributing, I’ll stop talking about it. I was randomly searching for something to watch on Netflix one night and for some reason clicked on a movie titled, “Holiday in the Wild.” Not filmed in Philadelphia, it was filmed in Zambia. A movie much more about elephant conservation than Christmas, it was really interesting to watch it and notice little things. Like that the film begins with modern cities in Zambia, a modern airport and luxury hotel. Local people were seen with ordinary clothes, although many had the African fabric and men and women often wore more loose fitting than Western styles. The roles of people who worked at the Elephant nursery were treated with respect and African people were seen as intelligent and hard-working and compassionate. Now I want you to reflect on the ways the dominant, white European culture in the United States typically describes what I will call, “original people”. How have you heard Native Americans described? How did whites describe the individuals brought to this country from Africa and forced into slavery? Mostly I think of the word, “savages”. -

April 16, 2020 Dear Member of Congress: On behalf of the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA), the Democracy Initiative, and the undersigned organizations, we are writing to denounce the continued increase in racist attacks and discrimination against the Asian American community, and to express our support for H.Res. 908, introduced by Representative Grace Meng (D-NY-6) and its Senate companion to be introduced by Senators Kamala Harris (D-CA), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), and Mazie Hirono (D-HI); both of which condemn all forms of anti-Asian sentiment related to COVID- 19. Hate and bigotry are not consistent with realizing the promise of American democracy where all of us have an equal voice. COVID-19 is a public health crisis that has fundamentally disrupted our way of life and is saddling our most vulnerable individuals and communities with significant new burdens. Our collective focus must be on overcoming this challenge and caring for one another. As the number of COVID-19 cases have increased, so too have attacks targeting Asian Americans. On March 14th, the New York Post published an article of a Chinese American father walking his son to the bus stop and was verbally and physically attacked by an angry stranger.1 Just days later in Texas, a Burmese man and his son were stabbed at a local Sam’s Club by a young man who attacked them because of their race.2 As these attacks have continued surging, we are concerned that as our country continues to struggle to overcome COVID-19, anxiety, frustration and fear will intensify before it subsides. -

El lugar de lo blanco: cartografía de una pregunta María Teresa Garzón* Eli Bartra RESUMEN El artículo presenta una cartografía sobre algunos de los campos de producción de conocimiento contemporáneos, como los whiteness studies, la teoría poscolonial, la crítica literaria y el feminismo, que han pensando lo blanco como una experiencia racial. Aquí se entiende que lo blanco, como constructo cultural, social y político, ha sido un tema poco estudiado en el contexto latinoamericano, pese a su protagonismo en la vida general de nuestros países y, en ese sentido, se hace un aporte de sistematización de varias de las investigaciones sobre este tenor, desde una perspectiva feminista y poscolonial. PALABRAS CLAVE: experiencia racial blanca, whiteness studies, poscolonialidad, feminismo, literatura. ABSTRACT The paper presents a mapping of some of the fields of contemporary knowledge production such as whiteness studies, postcolonial theory, literary criticism and feminism that have considered whiteness as a racial experience. Here it is understood that whiteness as a cultural, social and political construct has been studied very little in the Latin American context, despite its prominence in the general life of our countries; in this context, this paper contributes a systematic study of several of the investigations on this topic, from a feminist and postcolonial perspective. Signature 2 To the five Albanian families for opening their homes and sharing their stories with me. 3 Abstract My research explores the dialectical relationship between identity and the conceptualisation/creation of history and heritage in migration by studying a socially excluded group in Greece, that of Albanian families. Even though the Albanian community has more than twenty years of presence in the country, its stories, often invested with otherness, remain hidden in the Greek ‘mono-cultural’ landscape. In opposition to these stigmatising discourses, my study draws on movements democratising the past and calling for engagements from below by endorsing the socially constructed nature of identity and the denationalisation of memory. A nine-month fieldwork with five Albanian families took place in their domestic and neighbourhood settings in the areas of Athens and Piraeus. Based on critical ethnography, data collection was derived from participant observation, conversational interviews and participatory techniques. From an individual and family group point of view the notion of habitus led to diverse conceptions of ethnic identity, taking transnational dimensions in families’ literal and metaphorical back- and-forth movements between Greece and Albania. -

Opinion The Real Roots of ‘Black Capitalism’ Nixon’s solution for racial ghettos was tax breaks and incentives, not economic justice. By Mehrsa Baradaran March 31, 2019 The tax bill President Trump signed into law in 2017 created an “opportunity zones” program, the details of which will soon be finalized. The program will provide tax cuts to investors to spur development in “economically distressed” areas. Republicans and Democrats stretching back to the Nixon administration have tried ideas like this and failed. These failures are well known, but few know the cynical and racist origins of these programs. The neighborhoods labeled “opportunity zones” are “distressed” because of forced racial segregation backed by federal law — redlining, racial covenants, racist zoning policies and when necessary, bombs and mob violence. These areas were black ghettos. So how did they come to be called “opportunity zones?” The answer lies in “black capitalism,” a forgotten aspect of Richard Nixon’s Southern Strategy. Mr. Nixon's solution for racial ghettos was not economic justice, but tax breaks and incentives. This deft political move allowed him to secure the support of 2 white Southerners and to oppose meaningful economic reforms proposed by black activists. You can see how clever that political diversion was by looking at the reforms that were not carried out. After the Civil Rights Act, black activists and their allies pushed the federal government for race-specific economic redress. The “whites only” signs were gone, but joblessness, dilapidated housing and intractable poverty remained. In 1967, blacks had one-fifth the wealth of white families. ADVERTISEMENT Yet a white majority opposed demands for reparations, integration and even equal resources for schools. -

"Citizens In The Making": Black Philadelphians, The Republican Party And Urban Reform, 1885-1913 Abstract “Citizens in the Making” broadens the scope of historical treatments of black politics at the end of the nineteenth century by shifting the focus of electoral battles away from the South, where states wrote disfranchisement into their constitutions. Philadelphia offers a municipal-level perspective on the relationship between African Americans, the Republican Party, and political and social reformers, but the implications of this study reach beyond one city to shed light on a nationwide effort to degrade and diminish black citizenship. I argue that black citizenship was constructed as alien and foreign in the urban North in the last decades of the nineteenth century and that this process operated in tension with and undermined the efforts of black Philadelphians to gain traction on their exercise of the franchise. For black Philadelphians at the end of the nineteenth century, the franchise did not seem doomed or secure anywhere in the nation. -
